Cooking On SOLAR Power, Is This A Solution? - Induction Cooktop by Duxtop

I take a close look at how much power the Duxtop Induction Cooktop uses. Its said to have a variable watt output instead of the hard set options of 3 levels or watts. It was recommended by ‪@wirecutter‬ so I grabbed one up. Used their link too for the suggestion. I tried it on a bigger power station and wanted to know if you can use it on smaller power stations later in the video. We even tried out power boost or power lift to see if that would help.

Hi Ive, an induction cooktop does not use resistance to heat with. There is no heating element in an induction cooktop. It actually uses magnetism to heat. There is a term called hysteresis, which determines how much heat can be caused with magnetism. I haven't used that term since I was in college, and I been out of college for over 50 years, so not sure how to explain it, but if you have ever felt of a small transformer and saw how hot it was, Then you have seen magnetism create heat. The worse a transformer is wound, the more heat it creates with magnetism and hysteresis is a term for the heat it creates from induction. Induction is when you create magnetism by passing a current through a wire that is wrapped around an iron core. Not a great explanation, but I hope it helps.
@AskIveSolar
@AskIveSolar Год назад
A wealth of information Sir!
@Ian-pe9rj
@Ian-pe9rj Год назад
A induction cooker basically works like a transformer. The cooker acts as the primary winding, and the pan acts as the secondary winding, but the pan is a shorted turn, so the current flows freely through the pan which gets converted to heat. The technical term is called “eddy currents” which is the currents that flow through pan to create the heat.

I did this for awhile. Induction is extremely hard on lithium power stations. This is how I got started in the solar game. I had a crappy Milin Power Station and a 500watt Induction cooktop from South Korean. 500 watts is not a lot of wattage to cook and basically just enough to get liquid to boil. To get liquid to start to show repetitive bubbles took 25-30 minutes. As you can see it took half the battery to do anything involving liquid and took the entire battery to fry and the food most of the time never got thoroughly cooked. Coupled with the Milin having crappy ports and the infamous 12-volt-port-having-the-10-second-power-off-if-no-power-draw-is-detected feature the induction/power station combo was a non-doer for me.

This is a good read. Very interesting. I'm going to have to test.... In summer. But I certainly understand doing this on the milin.

@equallywrong
@equallywrong 3 месяца назад
@NateGPT I got rid of the Milin soon after this post. The solution was to buy a quality power station. I bought a BougeRV 1100 power station. I've had it a few years now and am pretty satisfied with it. I do not use it nearly enough so it's just sitting collecting dust. I'm not as interested in solar as I once was.
@veganpotterthevegan
@veganpotterthevegan 22 дня назад
@@equallywrong you think induction is hard on lithium, try a basic glass top, element stove or coil stove😂 So far, induction is the most efficient way to cook with electricity(battery or not). It's not ideal but its the best we have at the moment
@equallywrong
@equallywrong 22 дня назад
@@veganpotterthevegan my point of this post was about the Milin power station. The 500 watt induction cooker taxed the Milin power station to the maximum. I've had more experience since and now know to use a larger capacity power station. However you run induction cooktops, they can draw high current which very demanding on any power source.

Thanks for the video, I've also done some extensive testing with induction. It is very hard to find an induction cook top that varies the watts as you dial it in. There used to be some available at reasonable cost however, they are expensive to make with the delicate circuitry required. The cheapest way to make them now is to have the cycling power level at about 400 or 500 watts when a low heat is required to simmer, for example. When you get up to the mid point, level 5, it will be more stable at 1000w, after that, level 6, 7 etc the watts increase and are steady. There are models that top chefs and bakers use that maintain a very constand dialed in temperature, but they are over $1,000 ..... Also, I found that using cast iron is not recommended because 1. it gets so hot, it causes a over heading error on the cooker and 2. the lower grade cast iron can crack becasue it gets heated so fast, it's cooking the metal; that's induction. I love ours in the caravan (RV) on the inverter, soo good for off grid living. Keep up the good work, keep the videos coming.

This was cool to see an induction cooktop in action, I haven't used one before. I'm guessing with all the fancy touchscreen and button controls it needs full voltage to function. I have yet to find a useful device to run on 'Xboost' or "power lift' modes. These are a gimmick IMO (that's why I don't talk about it much in my reviews). On the screen of the 'duran duran' it shows 110v output, thats probably why you were seeing less wattage than advertised. If the power station put out the full 120v, it would have hit rated power.

Interesting. The chart on the Amazon page shows temp to watts and the reality is that it is basically useless for cooking anything by means of a power station / battery unless people have a huge system because the energy used takes too long. For the price of the unit it's better to just invest in a little propane stove and some propane. That will quickly cook / heat up food in no time thus saving your electric reserves for other needables and use minimal propane. Plus most people will already have the propane to run their duel fuel generators so they can charge up power stations / battery systems when there isn't any Sun.
@AskIveSolar

I guess I always look at these things as....if you have the power....why not. 600 watts on a sunny day to make something warm like beans or soup seems like an option if propane is limited.

I got a single induction hob from Deawoo in the mean time. It is more streamlined in my opinion and it shows normal wattage on the display, 500 watts for instance, instead of the confusing power levels. It seems the real lowest power is 1000 watts and it will cycle on/off when less is set. What is strange is that my bluetti ac200max reports 100 watts of load when the device is plugged into an active inverter. I need to read manual to see if they say anything about it. It isn't a big deal, because I unplug it when I am done with cooking and disable inverter to save power, I am flooded with solar anyway, but it is a strange load. Fan is off and my 14" floor fan takes only 40-50 watts.
