Man o man you’re got a pile of food. I’m sure you’re expecting company. I remember giving food to a solo paddler from Germany who ran out on Lake Temagami in the wind. We were camping on a island and had to go and get this lady she was really having a tuff time. She didn’t even know one word of English. She sure was happy we got her on land safely. Thanks Kevin cheers 🇨🇦👍
I've always wondered what Kevin packs for food, thanks for the inside peek! Our food barrel looks pretty similar for breakfast, lunch and snacks.....but its the dehydrated veg we skip. So the barrel fills up pretty quickly with fresh veg (onions, carrots, garlic, potatoes, corn, cukes, celery etc) The one must have on our trip is hot chocolate mix. Great blended with instant coffee for breakfast moccachinos.
Man you just made me nostalgic for my yellow El Capitan 2P. Loved that tent but my daughter packed it away with some moisture in it. I didn’t get it back for months and it was infused through and through with a stench of mildew that I couldn’t get rid of. It really hurt to throw it away.
I use cheese cloth and make sure to place the cheese in the centre of the food barrel and in the shade. Mold may form but I cut the outside off and feed it to the dog. And buy the cheese with preservatives in it.
Nice, gotta get myself a dehydrator. After deciding that all the exotic dish mountainhouse meals taste less good then their over priced beef stroganoff, I now just stick to side kicks, bens rice and knorr instant mashed potato with gravy side packet. Adding a few fresh green onions and a redpepper keeps a week and gives life to the side-dishes. That and really smelly, hard salami, the kind that makes you poop bullets. Booze - I stick to Appleton's rum! Cheers!
I go paddling in the Adirondacks and I bring EVERYTHING I want - weight no issue - I bring a cooler! Granted, no long portages. Coffee? REAL coffee WITH hal and half AND hot chocolate for flavoring! Breakfast? GOOD granola cereal WITH FRESH blueberries and raspberries! YES, I'm a knucklehead, but I have yet to do a wilderness canoe trip in which I really had to go easy on weight and space.
LOL! That sounds like the same stuff I would pack if I did backcountry camping, right down to the Appleton's! Actually, it would be Parrot Bay coconut rum as my first choice but Appleton's is my fav amber rum! :-)
Turkish coffee pot and Turkish coffee is great for canoe trips, pot is really small and only need sugar & the Turk coffee grounds cheers. Heading on ours in 2 weeks
Backcountry camping burns alot of calories and it's always good to be well prepared just in case you don't make it out on your scheduled day. Things do happen and having a contingency is a good idea!
Thank you Kevin, What is the brand name of the instant coffee? So you do not use any sort of cream like substance in your coffee? I know about the Coffee Mate but it is full of chemicals. I am looking for a better alternative.
@@TheHappyCamper Thank you. I have seen the Kickinghorse coffee beans but not in the instant form. Where did you buy it exactly? I am in Toronto (Etobicoke)
+Shaun MacMillan Paddling a 12 day trip means you are paddling 8-10 hours a day. Thats atleast 3000-3500 calories. Any multi day trip i try to eat between 3000-4000 calories a day.
@KCHappyCamper You are kidding right? No one and I mean no one today advises people to buy food with preservatives in it. Thats the worst advice I have heard in a while. Do you not know how bad preservatives are for the human body?
