I discovered your channel only 2 days ago. You are awesome! I can not stop watching your videos. A few years I discovered that I had ~20 relatives living in Russia. Babushka needs a headscarf/covering. I am not Russian but I think the word Babushka refers to the headscarf that older ladies wear.

No, the only translation of babushka is grandma. I only heard of all these misconceptions about this word when I came to America. Babushka is not a hat, not a scarf, not in official Russian, not in slang, not in a dialect. If you go to Russia and say "babushka", everybody will think you are talking about grandmother, not about a hat. Babushka is actually an endearing form of grandmother. Regular form is baba. But, of course, almost everyone in Russia is using the endearing form.

@@hpyrkh3 Some Russians are repeating that notion because that is where I heard it from. The one I talked to said babushka referred to the headscarf and they would call old ladies that because they wore the headscarf. Now I did here this in America. Perhaps the opposite is true. Thanks for the etymology. If I was Russian I would probably call my Grandmother Baba Yaga just to needle her.

@@joshuagenes Those Russians are saying it to either make fun of you or for the following reason: most Russians are not going to argue and explain things like I did, they think it's not cool to be a nerd like that. So, if they see that so many Americans believe that babushka is a scarf, they are not going to try to change their minds.
