I don't understand why we can't use woody plants to capture carbon from atmosphere and pyrolize them to make charcol. A stable form of carbon for thousands of years.

No reason we can't but there are a few issues: scale and particulate matter. At our current energy levels, we'd be choked by particulate matter. I think. Honestly I don't know much about it, except in historical contexts...
