Just want to add that I also collect Nihonto and my impression of this was at first doubtful but I can confirm that it is approximately 500 years. A few points to mention: 1) the Bo-Hi was very uncommon during that time period. This is true. 2) the Shirasaya are most likely new, and they SHOULD be brand new. If I saw a sword of this calibre in old and warn Shirasaya I would be disappointed. The fact that the Shirasaya are new adds to the value of the blade as it keeps it in better condition requiring less polishing. 3) Polishing can bring a blade back to its original state (minus a few millimetres of skin). You cannot judge a sword's age by its polish very well. Swords 25 years can have as much gunk on them as 1000 year olds ones (for example). Polish means nothing to the age of a sword so those judging it based on that have no clue what they are talking about. 4) The shape of the tang and its colour do match relatively well swords of that period. A sword that is 400-300 years will have a more brown colour whereas 400+ should have a dark-coal-like black. One very important thing I will mention is that this sword has been modified. This is given the fact that there are 2 holes in the tang. My idea would be that the bo-hi was added sometime recently (early 1900's) to remount useful koshirae. Very common in old swords to have been remounted to use in WW2. If this is true, this would explain the low cost of the sword (as noted by the maker of the video many comments ago).

Found my way back to this video..... Damn, 2 years ago I commented here, and people are STILL saying it's fake. No, it's not. It's a real sword, from that period, o-suriage (greatly shortened). I Do not want to disappoint you. Maybe it is a Katana, in the Form of a Shirasaya. I Do not think it is 500 years old. You May ask why i might say so. The Bo-Hi (in German Blut - Rille), in Englisch (Blood-Line or Blood-Curve) is something that came up ( was invented) later than 1500 or later than 1600. if i am wrong then please tell me / write me.

Didn't they start whitening the hamon in the late 1800 's ? If it's from the 1500's the hamon should look clear and shine like an abalone shell or pearl with shimmers and hard to see with only a lighter coloured steel for the top line.The white thin cream look should only be seen at an extreme angle with the light ...right ?

very nice o-suriage bijutsu token, I think from sugata and hamon it´s from nanbokucho to early muromachi period period, it´s a pity that we can´t see the jihada. Coud you tell us, how long and wide and thick it is? And, please, you should not touch the blade even in cotton gloves cause of the transpiration, you might use a clean cloth for holding the blade for better kansho... I am not a sword expert, just an amateur but i can tell you one thing : The tang is a part of the blade that is never cleaned, and i can't see any patina, any sign of aging on that tang. It is just black, extremely clean and looks straight out of the forge. Although it is a beautiful blade, it is way more recent than what you say... Nihonto are indeed works of art... question: how come most antique Nihonto come with the plain wooden Saya and Tsuka? Is it because those two parts wear out faster than the metal blade itself? Also, in Japan, is it possible for private citizens to own Sengoku-era matchlock musket? Apparently, a shrine claims it has Miyamoto Musashi's original katana, with his original Tsuba, and it is just the bare blade, and that is why I was wondering why it looks like some Nihonto have those plain wooden parts. Very nice sword you have though, very good quality for 500 years old!
@thepenultimateninja5797
@thepenultimateninja5797 3 года назад
I'm 5 years late, but here's your answer: this sword is in a 'shirasaya' mount, meaning literally 'white scabbard', or 'plain scabbard'. This is a 'resting scabbard' intended to protect the sword during storage. It is a tight-fitting yet 'breathable' scabbard that prevents rust. The sword would only be mounted in the full koshirae when in use. During use, the sword would be regularly maintained, so rust wouldn't be an issue.
@Nihontopride
@Nihontopride 3 года назад
Looks to be a Tachi that was later shortened and remounted as a Katana with papers from the NTHK. I do want to point out that the way you are unsheathing and re-sheathing the blade is VERY BAD! I mean, it REALLY makes my blood boil! Never EVER unsheathe or re-sheathe a fully restored Nihonto like this, you ALWAYS make sure the cutting edge is facing upward and the ONLY contact the blade has with the wooden sheath is along the Mune. When you unsheathe a fully polished sword, small particles of dust inside the sheath can scratch the polished sides of the sword, leaving scratches along the sword's length and mar the swords beauty over time. If you went to one of the major Japanese Sword Shows and unsheathed a $40,000 sword being sold to one of the high end dealers, there's a pretty good chance they'll kick you out and ban you from ever returning.

500 years old with a fuller, and more over a fuller that extends to the end of the tang? Are you sure it is 500 years old? I mean the quality looks great. Defiantly not a stainless steel cos-play toy, but I question the age due to the style of construction. I bet it cuts well. Looked fully sharpened with a convex edge and no secondary beville.

Reproduction swords are highly illegal in Japan. This one also has a kanteisho, which is a paper issued by the NBTHK which is a government subsidised group that appraises them. And in order for the sword to be legal to own in Japan to begin with, it needs to have something called a Torokusho, which is a paper that means it's been looked at and confirmed to be real antique, or real and forged by modern licensed Japanese smiths.

Japanese swords this old can definitely have a fuller. Just look into famous sword smiths' work from the 12 century and you can see that... However, what makes you think this is 500 years old? Is it just what the seller said? The lack of any markings makes it questionable in terms of identifying it's age. Still a beautiful sword anyway!
@CasualVitality
@CasualVitality 8 лет назад
Professor Positron It is hard to say for certain, but I also doubt this very nice sword is actually 500 years old. Regardless, there is no such thing as a "blood groove." A fuller which you are referring to is to decrease the weight of the sword. Less metal + the back of a Katana is already soft. Almost every nationality used this technique when making blades, but the exact points in time are debatable for every region.

Because it is not signed can we guess that it was made at a very good school and not signed because the swordsmith was not able to represent the school with his name yet? Is it common for Katanas not to be signed?
@yusukeurameshi3694
@yusukeurameshi3694 Год назад
There are no schools like that. I believe there may be 2 MAYBE 3 master swordsmiths left in japan and only 1 of them has a single deciple hes teaching. All others are either made by machine, from china, by the 2 or 3 swordsmiths from japan or have historical value being 200+ years old the one from this video was a tachi (which had a longer handle) which was shortened at the handle to make it the correct length of an average katana, along with the blackened rust on the nakago, around 500 years old is pretty accurate

+studisme That deep curve is more typical of swords older than 500 years old, the thing that would make me question the swords age is the fact that it's not signed by the swordsmith....But then again even Masamune didn't sign most of his works.

Natsu Dragneel Not entirely true. If the owners maintained it, it would still look good as new.

No name ? All Japanese swordsmiths put either their name or family crests on the handle.

no they don't. god damn, is it so hard to educate yourself before you make dumbass comments? it depends on who made it and why and where and when! MANY MANY MANY swords have nothing on the tang. ever heard of muramasa? they can identify the swords based on many things like shape, length, style, and records, not to mention the hamon is like a completely unique fingerprint for each sword, and its a common practive to made sketches of them when they are made. there are people who go to school to learn how to research japanese swords, there are societies you can send your sword to and they will find out all the information they can. god i love how people who have never owned an antique sword think they know everything. you really thing EVER sword MUST be signed? i guess it was a LAW, right? god damn....
