@@MikeyMcBryan The Antonov An-4 (An-2V) is a better idea if Canada will license it. Floatplanes are really for lakes, while seaplanes are for mildly choppy ocean water. And the An-4 is a smaller aircraft that needs a shorter "runway" than a Dakota. Also, you only need to buy one turboprop and the Ant has a stall speed at 31 mph, and of course, it is even tougher than a Dakota, because the CCCP preferred designs that continue to soldier on without proper maintenance...

Imagine to construct those floats with modern lighter stronger materials. Bassler turboprop + those floats makes it a perfect island hopper in the caribbean

Not just the lighter modern materials, but modern computerized design, taking advantage of the CAD's ability to test things in a safe environment, you could come up with something that could potentially cut weight by half of what they used to be.

@Thekilleroftanks

tbh i would just take a dc3 design and turn it into a flying boat, take the engines most modern dc3s use and other parts to keep the life spawn of the plane up and design a flying boat which you 100 percent can and solve so many problems the dc3 has and generally make a even better aircraft. seeing you can make a larger airframe allowing for more cargo, with that you need a fairly float boat hull meaning you can double hull the plane for added safety and with that large hull you have a stupid amounts of fuel large float planes like these are kinda stupid due to the drag they make compared to a flying boat. which while does have a lot of drag is a whole lot less than a flying boat design. more expensive because youre building a new aircraft.

We used to watch that bird perform aerial fly-bys at the Greenville International Seaplane Fly-in in Greenville, Maine each September back in the early 2000s. My late father-in-law was friends with Max, and I personally did some vehicle transport for one of the co-owners of that DC-3, which at the time, we were told was the ONLY one like it on the planet (on floats, that is). Interesting to run across this video today out of the blue!

I live 35 miles South of Folsoms. I've shot video of this plane flying and coming up out of the water onto land similar to the video you included, except I was further up on land. When the plane came up, I was under the right wing tip. It did a u-turn to pointing back to the water and parked. I was filming the while time. Engine's were wet with motor oil after she shut down. It's going to take some searching through VHS tapes to find the original video, but I hope to find it and post it one of these days.

Mikey, I’ve been in Texas almost all of my 68 years. I’m not familiar with a Lovers Lane texas. Lovers lane in Dallas has Love Field at the west end of it which was active in wartime with a number of associated businesses around it after. There is also a town called Lovelady in Texas. I could be wrong I guess but I’m not aware of another. By the way, the couple of years I wasn’t in Texas, my wife and I were in The Pas Manitoba. I was working for Revelstoke and she was with LambAir. 1974-1976. Buffalo is doing what I had dreamed of doing but didn’t work out. My dad was a flight engineer on C-47s & C-46s in WW2 and Korea. Enjoy the history, keep it up.

In the late 80s, I flew on a Cessna float-plane over Moosehead lake (Maine) as a passenger. When I told the friendly pilot, whose name I forgot, that I was flying DC-3s in South Africa for a living, he took the aeroplane over his house to show us the floats that he was about to install on his DC-3. He told us they had been used to house chickens on some farmer's property. Interesting times! Thank you for the great video!

I've always had an interest in avaition from the age of about 7 when I picked up my first book on the B-17 Flying Fortress from my local children's library. I went to work for my father in the recovery industry while also working at our own local airport for the cost of flying lessons, soloing just after my 16th birthday. Even though I was active in the Civil Air Patrrol and actually pertisipated in several search and rescues, it was not my fate to enter the Air Force and "the wild blue yonder". Instead I spent a year as a door gunner/crew chief on a Huges OH-6A more commonly know as a "LOACH" and then spent a lot of time in Europe until it was time for my retirement. It has been my intention to retire in Europe, more specifically, Germany, but as my retirement approached so did the end of the Cold War, subsequent drawing down of forces and thus job opportunities so I came back to the states where I began working in the recovery industry once again. An opportunity arose for me to purchase a Cessna 195 at what I thought was a more than reasonable price plus it came with quite a few accessories such as a crosswind landing gear and an uprated IFR panel. What I didn't know was just how expensive an annual could be or as it turned out the price of rebuilding that Jacob's radial Why I'm telling you all of this is to establish that for virtually my entire life I've been interested in avaition. Where I live to see an aircraft on floats was not all that uncommon. Fact is, I've seen several photographs of what appeared to me to be a C-47 on floats. I had absolutely no idea that it was more rare than even my Cessna 195 or that there was or ever had been a C-53!. Great video, as usual, thanks for the information.

My dad works at the airport in Bangor and got to refuel it years ago. Currently its sitting off the runway up in Greenville, ME. Last I heard they were restoring it and planned to have it operational for the 2019 seaplane fly in at Greenville (They didn't have it ready like the past few years). Its in rough shape from what I have been told, lots of water damage inside the plane, and I believe the engines need a rebuild, and currently the floats are off the plane. If I recall Folsom's went out of business in the 90's, so I don't think its flown since then. The old seaplane base got purchased by the state if I recall and is now the Warden Service float plane base.

I had the privilege of watching this beast fly off of Moosehead Lake back in the '80s. It was quite a sight as it would often pass directly over the town on its approach to landing on the lake. Dave Quam, who was at one time, president of the Seaplane Pilot's Assoc. took the interior footage of the a/c at that time using an early video camera. I've also met J. Frey (Edo Floats and a genuinely great guy) who was a regular at the fly-in every year. Unfortunately, a number of us missed out on a ride on it as that was the year the right hand engine threw a rod while running up at dockside. As to the floats, my understanding was that John (Max's dad) discovered them in Texas, purchased them and had them trucked to Maine. Apparently their arrival came as something of a surprise when they appeared at the airport. I was also told at that time, that the C-53 had once been Adolf Coors' (yes, the beer) executive transport. I can assure you, it was certainly impressive when you stood under it on Folsom's Flying Service's ramp. Those were good and interesting times in GA.

I guess that's why various navies around the world went with flying boats instead of float planes especially as they got larger. US used the Consolidated PBY Catalina, and Martin PBM Mariner, and the IJN had their excellent Kawanishi HK8 "Emily", and H6K Mavis. Flying boats were much more efficient for their size and weight. As a side note my father flew on a single mission with "The Black Cats" in the SW Pacific because he was bored, and they needed volunteers. He was US Army Amphibious Engineers. They went on a evening bombing run of a Japanese base. They a motors shot out as well as there radio, and radio direction finder. They limped home but made it back with no casualties. A fine testiment to the ruggedness of the PBY. I used to love flying the the Twin Otters a local airline here in Hawai'i used to fly. I found out they puts floats on these too though not as large as a DC-3/C-47. Any in your neck of the woods Mikey? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d-Bn__SVxto.html

Great footage and archived interviews, Mikey! You dug up some fantastic history there! Would love to see one of your DC-3s on floats - that would be pretty wild! I'd imagine that would open up a few more delivery options for you guys, too. 😎 Doesn't sound like a very cheap endeavor, however. Guess you'd have to line up enough off-the-beaten-path customers to justify it. Great stuff, Mikey!! 👍🍻

After WW2, Walnut Ridge Army Airfield in Arkansas was turned into a warbird graveyard and the planes were scrapped by a private contractor. There is a museum there now. Many of the C-47s on floats were scrapped there. I have seen pictures of them there.

I used to see Folsom’s DC-3 on floats at Moosehead Lake in Maine in the 80’s or 90’s.

Hello Mikey. I know this is a late comment but I just ran across this last night. That's some of the most impressive footage on aircraft history that I've seen in a long while. Never would have thought of a C-47 on floats. Pretty amazing to watch. I have been up to your location before (several years ago with one of our distributors that you purchase from). Just a note to let you know our company makes deice boots and we're currently working on the C-47 application. We are familiar with Basler that you mentioned in the video as well. Thanks for posting this.

Loved the videos. Flew in DC-3s out of Resolute and Grise Fiord. Don't recall if the land strip in Grise was long enough but we were using the ice strip then and during the dark season when 6 snow machines were used as runway lights. Once the wheels touched the ice two miles short of the ice strip and luckily there was no pressure ridge over it would have been all over.

Mister Mikey McBryan your videos are certainly the MOST inspirational vids on utoob, probably even the entire internet! Benjamin says he'll be back on the Fokker come warmer climes so that will be nice to see. Thought you guys went your separate ways due to differing opinion.

Your Dad's N3N-3 Yellow Peril was designed and built by NAW (Naval Aircraft Works?) to be either a wheeled or floatplane by the US Navy, much in line what Robert Noorduyn thought of his Norseman. Douglas on the other hand was asked to add another feature to the Dakota Swiss Army pocket knife- mmm yes it can do it but its not a master of it. But the 'Floatkota' still captures my attention.

Really cool video, Mikey. I used to haul floats for Wipair in S.St Paul. Got to see them manufactured. Quite a lot engineering in the process. Sure enjoyed this episode!! Hi to Stella and Joe from us here in Minnesota!

When my Dad worked for the Bay in the 70s and 80s they had a DC 3, CF-ETE, which had floats under it for a while. When it was on floats it flew out of Saint Andrews, just north of Winnipeg on the Red River.

When I was going to A&P school in 1971 at Spartan School in Tulsa, I worked for a guy named Marvin Sullinger. I was the one man operation for making Montgomery Prop Spinners for 985s, 755s and 1340s prop hubs. That was one of his businesses. He had tons of scrap planes laying around and melted them down on a weekly basis. After working there for a year or so, I finally asked him what was in those 4 huge shipping crates about 60' long. He said they were 2 sets of amphib floats for C-47s. Years later in 2001, I was working in Tulsa for a year and tried to find his old plant and it was completely removed along with 20 acres of scrap planes. I always wondered who got those floats or if they were melted down.

Largest plane I've seen pictured on floats was the four-engined German Condor. It was a pre-war passenger plane already making non-stop flights across the Atlantic to New York. It was converted for maritime war patrols.

..... Last time I was in Greenville, ME three years ago one of Folsom's floats was stored in the Fish and Game hanger and the other was in a garage on the same property.
