my biggest complaint, which im pretty sure uve covered in one of your videos, is that cards have NO negative cost anymore. Branded is the biggest example of this. U can clear their whole board, doesnt matter. They can search branded fusion and special summon albion, mirror jade all over again lol.
@Hiushisan
@Hiushisan 5 месяцев назад
Exactly. It's positive into positive into positive, with no downside to anything. Some cards have half hearted attempts at downsides, like "you cannot special summon monsters for the rest of the turn, except dark monsters." but the cards in question are usually intended in a strategy that uses 90% dark monsters, so it ends up not affecting the player at all. I'll even lump generic material extra deck monsters in this argument, since the downside would be needing whichever specific material, but things like Baronne de Fleur, who should require Fleur Synchron, are instead free to be used wherever, whenever.
@bishop1283

You've definitely got a point. Everyone has seen the "fix this archetype with one custom card" type of videos. The reason for them is that these type of cards have been printed for certain archetypes and takes away bricking in such a way that those decks will now always be consistent. This often gives them amazing recovery and feels bad to play against with decks that can brick (even if their ceiling might be higher).

In Mayakashi that card is Hajun, the Winged Mayakashi. He specials the Tuner from the deck, which does everything else. Unfortunately he's extremely Ash-able. Tip if you somehow see Mayakashi in the wild, Hajun is a very good Ash target. The search spell might just be bait to help him resolve. The deck natively has most of its lines choke point at him. Funnily, the only real line that continues after a Normal Summoned Hajun gets negated is to special summon Yuki-Musume, dump the Tuner from deck, and just link out of it. xD One of the main selling points of the archetype when it came out was that one card did it all- and now that's a feature of a lot of decks. They've gotten some modern support with decent text on it, but most of the time its extreme xeno-lock prevents it from being viable. Guess that's why they printed an archetypal Vanity's Emptiness... They couldn't print a one-card combo since the deck already had one, so they jammed an oppressive floodgate in. I like this kind of consistency being more common though- nobody likes bricking. Even winning against a brick feels like you missed out on a game. My issue with modern Yugioh is that a lot of modern boards that are so consistently available have oppressive levels of interaction and/or floodgates that prevent the other player from playing the game. I think having amazing recovery is fine! Grindy and come-from-behind games are super fun and intense.

it extends to spell cards too. every spell is like 3 spell cards now, because they have an activation effect, a passive and an active. or they have an on field effect + a GY effect. the GY effect is annoying coz it adds more crap to have to worry about even after it's left the field

It honestly removes the concept of a starting hand, since almost anything you could start with turns into the exact same combo every time. I've said this a few times before but these problems were present since the much beloved Duelist Alliance set. While Dragon Rulers definitely were purveyors along with Spellbooks, they still had limitations that Shaddolls and Burning Abyss started to basically push through, not to mention the ceiling Pendulums pushed, and Links were the final nail in the coffin precisely due to their generic nature

In old school yugioh the most satisfying thing was when your combo came together in your hand 10 minutes into a duel and you could finally do some big elaborate play, Konami seemingly aware of this phenomenon redesigned the entire game so this could happen turn 1 for any archetype

When I was getting into the game again with Master Duel, this was super obvious. They had their 10 minute turns because each card could could do so much, and here I was sitting with my Monarchs. I'm probably getting it confused with some other deck since it was so long ago, but I remember actually using Mirror Force to wipe a Harpy deck's side of the board, but next turn they just built up a board again and killed me. It feels like you can't really play the game if you're not playing the right decks.

of course you cant win against modern decks if you use an old deck, you dont need to play meta decks, but make sure to use new cards. powercreep is a problem in every card game but that doesnt mean you cant decide what to play. but as in every other card game, meta decks perform much better compared to non meta decks being able to play every single archetype you want to without a disadvantage is not possible

When it comes to one card starters, I feel like Circular is just in a class by itself. Marincess is one of my favorite decks to play in Master Duel because Blue Tang can be an immune to everything Link 4 Marincess monster with a Marincess Wave in hand all by herself, even if she gets Ash'd or Imperm'd on summon, but it can require a little bit of luck with the hand and/or her excavation effect. Circular, however, can be the *only* card in someone's hand and you're still going to need four or five kinds of interruption to stop them from basically winning if they go first, or OTK'ing you if they go second.

I was just telling my friend that. I was watching this replay from DistantCoder playing sprights, and his opponent got him down to 1 card in hand and he was still was able to turn it into like a +3 on just how much one thing just chains to the next chains to the next. And it really got me thinking how wrong that felt somehow(?) like, the opponent fundamentally crushed him in every single sense, discarded him two cards, banished his first play, destroyed another and yet that still turned into a +3. Not sure how to feel about that in general.

its a very hard thing to balance cause someone being board broken and down on recourses then top decking a circular or something and making a full basically unstoppable comeback can be equally annoying to someone making their board then shotgunning every interruption they have and you lose because you’ve been blown out. so its a pretty interesting balance, another thing I will say is old ygo and stuff like that, while monsters werent the insane top deck of the time, top decking something like monster reborn or similar could constitute its own comeback as well or other extremely powerful s/t cards

Traptrix Sera, Lady Lab… lookin at y’all This has kinda been a thing since at least ABCs debut. Union Hangar was one hell of a field spell back then. For those who didn’t experience ABC in its heyday. Field spells being a ROTA and also getting you more body’s out of the deck when you summoned one… that was powerful and not really a thing from a ton of field spells until that Point. It was an instant +2 (unless you got Ogre’d, ouch). On top of that you had terraforming at 3 so the consistency was nutty.

Something I noticed about Yu-Gi-Oh! cards today, is that they changed the card backs. The swirl pattern used to stop, forming the black circle in the negative space, resembling the circle you see on the anime card backs. Well, now it's more prominent, and looks like it was placed over top the existing pattern, rather then being formed from the pattern.

I think Link monsters have definitely created a pacing issue that I don’t know how you solve. Pretty much every link monster inherently special summons, searches, or recycles and there is no limit to how many times you can link per turn. Think about 90% of “broken” combo decks and you realize it’s because of the link ability to extend and recycle outside of the main decks ability alone. I think there should be a limit to how many times you can link summon in one turn, it’s the only feasible way I can think of to course correct the pacing and balance out the meta at the same time without just banning/limiting every good link card.

Yeah this is probably the biggest design challenge for Yugioh, there's a baseline level of consistency that a deck needs to be able to function at all nowadays, and by far the easiest way of creating a consistent archetype is with powerful one-card starters. And nowadays those starters can't easily be normal summon dependent either, because when decks are using one-card starters like this, a single disruption piece can shut down an entire turn, so more and more of these are now nomi monster starters, and the more nomi starters that exist, the more that are able to act as engines and go into engine pile decks. It wasn't very long ago that Terrortop + Taketomborg into a free Rank 3 was so powerful it needed to be banned, and now an archetype that doesn't have significantly more than that free Rank 3 isn't worth playing. The biggest sin though is that Konami controls the power level of these sorts of engines entirely based on whether or not they add archetype locks to starters. It's just so transparent when Konami is deciding that the game needs to be powercrept, and also when Konami decides a deck that would be meta isn't going to be.

I dont like modern card design in general they simply do too much. 1 affect is fine 4 to 5 is ridiculous. Also dont like negates slapped on boss monsters they essentially become omni negates thing about negates in OG Yu-Gi-Oh it was only on spells and traps being single use cards for backrow counterplay. Completely overboard for easy ro summon generic boss monsters that are all omni Negates who have multiple interactions based where it is. In other words modern cards are too consistent every duel feels like its computer programmed. You feel you dont have an identity as a player because your plays are mapped out for you.

11:40 FUNNY THING... (Cyber Dragons pretty much). We need Cyber Dragon support SO badly! I had to compete against "my own deck" let alone against my opponent, to get ANYTHING done with my favorite deck (Cyber Dragons). So one handtrap and the entire play (if you had any) is stopped. -I played against someone who had a full board of negates, and i somehow managned to stop his board, and then use the last card in my hand to make the most pathetic play possible, BUT WAIT it's a META deck (even though the guy was FIGHTING saying it's not a meta deck) so after finishing a FULL COMBO, he STILL HAD 3 DIFFERENT HANDTRAPS IN HAND. A good solution to prevent the constant summoning that happens is to archetype/attribute/type lock a lot of the starters and so forth. I play Icejade, for example, and they recently gave it a GREAT starter, Icejade Ran Aegirine. It fixed so many problems with Icejade's engine. However, if you use its starter effect, it limits you to only Synchro summoning water-type monsters. That restricts it to the Icejade ace monster, and maybe Swordsoul Supreme Sovereign if you feel like it, but you want that Icejade ace monster first, believe me (destroy/banish protection/quick effect counter banishment), and you can't use Ran's effect more than once per turn. If they just start restricting archetype-specific cards to archetypes, attributes, and monster types, I think it could clear up a lot of the generic summon spam abuse. It won't fix all of it, but it'll help.
@datguy8296
@datguy8296 5 месяцев назад
Having strict locks dates the archetype and means it will only fall further into irrelevancy as time goes on. You are basically praying that Konami will support that specific archetype out of the 1000+ that exist in the game. I'd rather every deck have Dlink sort of approach where it still gets indirectly supported due to not having any hardlocks., that way it doesn't feel like you have to constantly have to switch decks every 6 months

@@datguy8296 Then how do you deal with instances of decks becoming meta breaking tier 0 messes like with Tears and Ishizu? Or Kashitra cards getting use in every deck with that level 7 summoning spell, and Fenrir? Or Chaos Angel, Baronne, and Borreload Savage being in every Synchro deck out there? Every deck gets support with generic spells, traps, non-archetype specific monsters, but to act like there isn't a problem with abuse of some cards leading to frustration with players being generic with their play style isn't good. Maybe my idea isn't the solution, but I do think there's a problem of inadvertent generic monster abuse that needs some kind of fix. Otherwise, they'll eventually end up on the banned/limited list, and then no one gets to play them. It also causes a massive power creep spike in an attempt to balance it while it's out there, thus making a huge swath of the game irrelevant.

I don't really mind floodgates or 1 card starters for most decks, I just dislike how few answers there are to cards like this that are easy to weave into decks without making them too bloated in any given category. Main decking spell/trap destruction in an archetype that doesn't have it natively can result in straight up brick hands, so the consequence of leaving those cards out is that the only counter to a TCBOO or a Gozen Match or god forbid a Skill Drain is for the opponent to have a monster on board and use Imperm's column negate effect to secure a turn to combo off. That's not to say there's no way for decks to find their footing - cards like Triple Tactics Talent and Kashtira Fenrir and Thrust can provide outs or the means to an out for anything an opponent sets up, including a powerful floodgate. As for 1 card starter topdecks, the problem isn't even that cards like circular exist, it's that between Pot of Prosperity, established graveyards, and recursive engines like Sinful Spoils, decks are able to recover from nothing like never before. Nearly every deck has the power to blast back in ways that make full power Dragon Rulers blush back in the day. Personally I'd love to see more bi-modal cards like my favorite card of all time, Shaddoll Dragon, which can function as an interrupt with a little set-up or pop any spell or trap card when sent to the graveyard. Powerful cards with definitive purposes, with application regardless of the match-up without necessarily being a starter.

Yea I don't think every deck (or any really) should be able to play through multiple hand traps, no problem, AND still set up a full board. At what point do we stop it? The part that really makes this hurt is that older decks just become more and more unplayable. Like dogmatika, if you play it pure and the ritual way, you can play through one MAYBE two hand traps depending on what you draw in your opening. And after that, you're done and were not even talking about how bricky it is. But dragon link...it almost feels like you can't stop them. And even when they try and add new card to old archetypes (like they are doing with ancent gear now) all they end up doing is adding one card starters that usually aren't nearly as strong as mathmech circular, for example. Then you stop them with ash and done. And it's still a deck that can't be played in modern yugioh. Like is the ceiling so high for some decks but so low for others? Why not try and make everything SOMEWHAT able to play at the table. I'm not asking for everything to be the same power level. But at least have them be able to think about competing without relying on the kther guy to brick.
@saprikt

I feel like it's kind of sad when cards that "do everything" give a bad name to an archetype or even monster type. Take for example Cyberse, everyone can see how "if this card is in your hand, special it, if In GY, special it too why not, hell, go ahead an special another copy from the deck while you're at it, and what's that? You used it as a link material? Go ahead and bring that sucker back!" Is not really amazing card design. Mathmech circular is of course the most obvious example but I believe the saddest part about the hate these monster types get is that it's 100% valid. Even if without it the archetype would suffer a bunch, nobody is willing to recognize that it might actually really need it to compete just like every other "one card does it all" out there. I agree that it's cool almost all decks get to do it, but few people understand what it really means to take that away from certain decks.

Exactly thats why no matter how much people hate cyberse decks mathmech circular is fine to have at 3 cyberse decks don't anything other decks can't do and a lot of times it only takes 1 or 2 hand traps to wax them because a lot of the cards with the exception of cards like addition and subtraction need a link monster to be special summoned math-mech at full power was in no way anymore unfair than other decks that were equally unfair or more unfair than it infact there were tons of decks way more unfair than it when circular got limited and thats with everything going the way is now circular ought to be able to come back to 3 the hate surrounding cyberse is ridiculous they aren't even in the spotlight anymore we get cyberse support maybe every now and then its fine to have a cyberse archetype thats a little better than rogue if we can hate cyberse this much we should be able to hate every deck thats stronger and or more unfair equally I think the main reason why people hate it so much isn't just because is because cybersehis what initially brought link monsters into it was the beginning of link monsters and people hate how generic things have become since they have been introduced into the game

Yeah I absolutely hate this aspect of modern Yu-Gi-Oh where one card can create an entire board. It is quite literally my least favourite thing about the game.
@kyleboddy5711
@kyleboddy5711 5 месяцев назад
My usual plan for deck building has been to look up builds on ygo pro and mimic it to start with. Usually they include a ton of hand traps and meta cards. Then tweak it so it's easier for me to go through combos. I've been seeing other cards in the archetypes that do the exact interactions or more so in a few cases that almost never get played. Eldlich cards were some. The bonus is that the in archetype cards are typically searchable and have fewer restrictions. So don't forget to look over the whole list and make sure you're not depriving yourself of an easy extra negate or special summon.

I don't like it. I don't like archtypes in general. They don't require any creativity. I feel like archtypes are just like ' here are these cards, and heres how to play them'.
@Honest_Mids_Masher
@Honest_Mids_Masher 5 месяцев назад
Yet when you give a random person a salamangreat deck they wouldn't know what to do so really no the deck doesn't teach you how to play them. Decks nowadays have far more creative combo lines and creativity imo exists in greater capacity as compared to most older non archetype decks running the same boss monsters and such.
@Noisivus
@Noisivus 5 месяцев назад
@@Honest_Mids_Masher you’re not coming up with those combo lines, they’re just pre-built into the archetype. Its less of a strategic battle and more a frantic race between two rats in maze trying to get to that one card.
@Honest_Mids_Masher
@Honest_Mids_Masher 5 месяцев назад
@@NoisivusSure that's how it is......turn 1. Past turn 1 resources become slimmer and also the game state changes if you tried doing the optimal like say Vaylantz combo where you start off with Shinonome that's gonna get interrupted and so you alter your routes accordingly and attempt to bait out all forms of interaction before commiting to the main play. A better example with a more well known deck would be branded you have bystials, Cartesia and many other ways to bait out interactions from your opponent before immediately starting off with a branded fusion. Alternative lines are there it's just that there's always a main card you want to get to and even then older decks were still centered around a certain card. GOAT format had decks running mainly light and darks even some unnecessary ones for chaos monsters. Decks were focused entirely on Darks for DAD. The playstyles and combos themselves are very linear too.
@l3oogle
@l3oogle 5 месяцев назад
@Honest_Mids_Masher I didn't say they teach you how to play them, of course you have to learn. But everyone plays archtypes the same way. One person finds the optimal way to play it, and that's the only way it should be played. Uncreative.
@l3oogle

Or the cards rail road you into playing a certain way. This guy searches this guy, this guys does this which works with this, etc. Pre built for you.

Droll is not the problem, modern yugioh is. When droll is considered an option, the game is not healthy. If anything like, max C should be unlimited.

@@Honest_Mids_Masher Not really. If I can win in a game of commander by creating 40 1/1 tokens and deal 1 damage to each opponent for each token without attacking in one turn (or just give myself infinite turns), max c should be fine in a meta where you can summon your deck in one turn (modern yugioh).
@Honest_Mids_Masher
@Honest_Mids_Masher 5 месяцев назад
@@Andrew_the_Worthy_ShieldFirst of all comparing Yu-Gi-Oh to Magic isn't a good comparison at all these are too different games with two very different set of mechanics, playstyles, metas and decks in general along with a resource system. Second of all you do realize the amount of summons a deck can do doesn't equal to how powerful a deck is right? Rescue Ace, Purrely, Vanquish Soul, Kashtira, etc are all meta decks and yet they don't even special summon as much as a deck like HERO's, Speedroids, Lunalights, Earth Machine. Notice how most of these decks aren't good despite summoning a lot? Maxx C would only end up making these bad decks even worse comoared to the meta. Also Maxx C itself was printed when not every deck could special summon a number of times apart from Plant Synchro and Six Samurai. It was printed so slower decks could keep up. However soo many decks can now keep up to where Maxx C has lost it's purpose. Next being the results that Maxx C would cause. The current TCG format is full of Variety so your side deck has to be prepared for anything and you'd have to be able to take out certain cards in certain matchups. Maxx C however limits the deck space for this by making you run triple Ash, Triple crossout, Triple Maxx C and a called by. That's 10 cards you have to run in every deck because of Maxx C and you can't side them out. Heck some decks can't even afford to run the whole package. Literally every pendulum deck is already stuffed to the brim with their own cards that they can already even without Maxx C barely afford to run non engine. Those 10 cards couldve helped make a bad deck more consistent, An engine to help support a deck or most importantly to run cards that counter the meta. By limiting deckspace it's difficult to run cards that counter some of the strongest decks of the format. All in all Maxx C helps meta decks and kills casual decks more than anything.

harpie dont have a card like that... eyes restrict dont have a card like that... i think only modern archetype have stupidly broken card like that.. older one dont.... stupidly broken card like that exist is actually a problem, it means the game arent balance... there shouldnt be a card where if you play it, you play your whole deck..
