Looks like I've got the same issue. Crap. My estimate was $3,500. That includes replacing the plugs, covers, timing chain, water pump, etc. Is it 100% required to replace all of those other components (i.e., the timing chain, plugs, covers) just to replace the water pump and repair the coolant leak?
If you have just w/p leaking, you can replace the pump only with chain cover seal . Except if ur valve cover gasket and plugs bad then need to replaced too

I'm having a hard time accepting what they're telling me because it's one of those situations where a leak was obviously occurring, but I could find little to no evidence of leakage in my driveway at all prior to taking my Explorer to this particular shop. Now that they've gotten in there and created this estimate, I have had to replace coolant for the past two days and it's leaking like a sieve. I am not driving it at all until it gets repaired, but I find it funny that things have gotten so much worse less than 24 hours after getting their cost estimate. I am working to find out what the minimal (absolutely needed) repairs would cost me and then I'm going to have it taken to a different shop, I think. I'm thinking the water pump and plugs, but I just can't afford the timing chain replacement and the labor for that right now. Does this approach seem to make sense to you?
I’ve done a handful of these. What normally happens is that the engine gets hot enough to damage/cook the seals and plug boots. Boots come out in pieces and spark plugs get damaged fishing out rubber. Normally if you’re over 100,000 miles it’s good practice anyway to replace the spark plugs. These 3.5 in the fords are due for this service from my experience at 120,000 miles. I’m doing them at around $2000 for pump, timing chains/guides/tensioners/spark plugs/valve cover gasket’s/oil change.
