FYI: I have done this job many times, One thing I would recommend is to use ULTRA-BLACK gasket maker for the cover.. Made by Permatex.... Put in on the cover, then just finger tighten the bolts. Wait an hour then torque the bolts... If you torque the bolts immediately with ULTAR BLACK or plain RTV, just about all of it will squish out the side...could be inside or outside the cover...this will compromise the ability to properly seal oil..
@harrybalsonya5619
@harrybalsonya5619 Год назад
Or you just use the TA-357 that Ford recommends and put it on the cover in the correct spot and never worry about a leak from the cover.
@cerrem1

@@harrybalsonya5619 Seriously ?? Permatex actually exceed the TA-357 spec... FORD will always recommend using FORDS products $$$$$$... If FORD would recommend you also use their MOTORCRAFT Toilet paper, would you ???

@@cerrem1 loctite makes the ta-357 for motorcraft, simply remove the label and see. I have seen many types of sealants used on the covers, some don’t seal well and some make it all but impossible to remove the cover resulting in a broken cover but most of all because some sealants will cause oil foaming. As far as your application technique, the sealant is to be applied on the beveled edge of the cover NOT the machined surface. I would surmise that is why you get some much sealant squeezing out. I realize there’s many ways to do a job and a job this labor intensive I prefer to do it right the first time. The lesson is over, you may go now.

Doing one of these on a edge at the moment, with the luxury of working at a shop and having access to lifts, I find it easier to just drop the motor out. Having the engine on a stand makes the rest of the job a lot easier

If only more mechanics were like this man. He is knowledgeable and presents this issue without being an alarmist as some mechanics are on this. I have an 09 Taurus X that I bought from new. Outside of batteries and tires over the years, i have had to do absolutely nothing to it and it still drives and looks like new. Only over the past few years have I seen others with this waterpump issue pop up on the internet with the 3.5 liter V6. the gist of most the youtube videos are such that if the water pump goes out, you might as well throw the car out as the labor to change it will be over $3000 and if the coolant get into the oil, you will likely need a new engine at over $4500. Most people will not spend that much an a 15 to 20 year old family car. But if this man could do it as he says, I would look up Johnson Ford and ask for him as the mechanic for this job, if I ever have this problem develop on my car. but the chances of being nearby his workplace seem remote.

2013 Taurus SEL, 120.54K on it and yeah, leaking coolant exactly where shown in the video. I'm good with twisting a wrench, but I just don't think I want to tackle this repair. I did the troubleshooting, checked the fans worked with the AC on, that they came on after idling until the temp hit 210F and the fans came on without the AC on, then at 206F the fans shutoff. Checked the thermostat, it works, kicks open around 175 - 180 degrees. I use a bluetooth ELM plugged into the OBDII and an app called Torque lite on the android phone. Nice little app, can clear the logs and add the gauges you want to use. I know this repair, it'll cost $$$$ but was told by Ford dealer service person it will have a 2 year warranty on the work done. Man o man, they want $199.95 to diagnose, I said $200 and he repeated it is $199.95 and we can't warranty the job if we just use you're diagnosis. WTF! I've got videos of the leak , exactly where the weephole is, there is no way it is anything else. I knew this would happen some day. All those aftermarket warranty commercials remind you of it.

Put my explorer back in the shop for the second water pump in the shop today after just 40,000 miles, 2 years and 1 month after the first one!! I love my ford explorer but this is bullshit! Just outside the warranty not to mention the cost!!! I change my own oil mobile 1 full synthetic every 5000 miles, full synthetic oil filter, air filter. Don't think I'll be buying ford ever again...that design is retarded!!

Just diagnosed this on a friend's 2015 Taurus 3.5L SEL last night. Initially looked like just a failed radiator (coolant was present at bottom and rear of radiator core). Filled w/distilled H2O and pressure tested system: sure enough, her WP took a dive at 99k miles like an out of work boxer stuck under the thumb of the mob. The Toyota 3.5L is not a fun WP to do at all, but those are external and will not dump coolant into the oil when they fail. This Ford 3.5L WP design has to be one of the most thoughtless engineering moves in a long time... 🤡 🙈 👏 Than you, Flying Wrenches for putting this little vid together. 🍺

And it wears the shaft bearing down or the seal wears. If you just don't maintence you'll get alot more life from them for sure.

According to Ford the most successful way of doing this job without getting oil ( awl ) leaks it to take out the engine. It's an absolute nightmare doing it in the car and there are a crap load of bolts in a few different sizes holding the massive cover and they all need to be torqued in a specific sequence. 70% chance of oil (awl) leaks if you do it in the car. And in my opinion you got rocks in your head if you don't change the chain and guides. Great job Ford engineers for building in this water pump nightmare. What a dumb idea.

I am a retired US Marine. Besides being part of the worlds most elite fighting force in the world, I was also an automotive mechanic who usually worked on big heavy duty military trucks and tracked vehicles. I love to see it when young women and men, like you, get into the workforce as mechanics. In my younger days, I learned how to work on vehicles, build or upgrade homes, plumbing, electrical repairs, and so on. I am constantly amazed by the new generation of women and men who can’t either find an oil dipstick or replace a flat tire! The new generation of young people are very savvy when it comes to computer use and video games though. So sad, that it is really hard to find good quality mechanics anymore or people who want to learn that trade.

For some reason Ford had an external water pump on their rear wheel drive vehicles using the 3.5 and 3.7 v6’s and an internal water pump on the front wheel drives. I own a 2013 Edge with 140,000 miles with no problems but I change my oil every 5,000. Miles with full synthetic and flush the radiator every 30,000 miles or 3 years, which ever comes first. It is a great car so far, I plan on keeping this car for over 200,000 miles. If the water pump fails, hopefully I catch it in time and I will repair it.

Mine failed at 88K. First extended warranty I ever purchased and it was covered. Contrary to the "book time", my dealer replaced it in 6 hours of clock time. They charged me $95 to replace the chain and guides (my ask) while they were in there. 50K later and it's running well. Yes, the car shouldn't have had the issue in the first place. I'm at least as troubled that the book time is 12-14 hours, when they did the job in 6 hours of clock time. I may have gotten the magic mechanic and I thank him or her for their talent, but come on Ford.

I replaced absolutely everything while I was in there, because I have the luck of a no leaf clover on things like that and would be back in there again by the next oil change replacing a tensioner or whatever. Besides the cost of a chain, guides, tensioner, phasers, whatever is pennies on the dollar compared to going back in a second time.

I had the coolant flushed in my 2017 Explorer limited w/3.5L V6 about a month ago as recommended by the ford manual when reaching 100k miles. I was a little over 99k at the time. 99,600 miles and I got a notification that my coolant was overheating. Checked and it was extremely low in the reservoir. Took to shop and was told water pump is bad and the timing chain also needs to be replaced. Could flushing the coolant have caused this issue? I had no signs of losing coolant prior to the flush. Is it common to continue to have problems after replacing water pump in the 2017 Explorers?

I understand that these rigs don't last forever. The older stuff is better, if you own them. Newer stuff is fine, if it works, but once they give trouble, they are a pain. From what i have read it is a common problem after the replacement. The front cover gets silicone applied to it and is a pain to put back on the front of engine. If old silicone isn't removed all the way and or new silicone gets messed up putting the front cover back on you will have a leak. The shop that performed the repair should cover that.

Use full synthetic oil with regular changes Also make sure you change the coolant They have an additive you can put in the coolant to keep the rubber gasket and seals conditioned What happens is oil can become acidic and eat the seals Coolant can also become acidic and eat the seals Also there is a lawsuit against FORD because this water pump failure has happened on many many many many cars They knew it was a problem and did nothing.

They tell me this is super common issue. I did have premium warranty and hope they do not find some way to beat me out of it. The guy bringing me home says it could cost $3,600. My car only had 22,000 miles on it and would not have found it save an after market shop oil change. Never saw a drop of coolant on the garage floor. Would not want one of these out of warranty.
