Give this man his flowers 💐 after worrying for two years in the Phoenix AZ heat why my 05 Durango would heat up while in park or idling then get back to normal when driving again … I saw this video and realized why I always had to keep topping off my coolant it was evaporating through my old rusty radiator cap … went to Auto Zone for a 20 PSI cap for $8.20 and put it on and it’s 115 degrees in Phoenix today and I ran the Durango to normal temp drove around for 15 mins then sat in park for 25 mins while the sun was beating down and the temperature gauge stayed right in the middle the whole time! My wife and I are super excited to have good people like you teaching us these things and saving us a lot of money! God Bless you and your family thank you! Just subscribed and gave this a like 😎

I have a mystery leak that isn't noticable on the ground or in the engine bay. Over about a month, I lose the entire contents of the overflow. It has never overheated, thankfully. I was squeezing the the big hose on the right and could literally hear the cap breathing in and out and finally created a noticeable drip. This vid help a TON! Thank you!

O.M.G! My trusty 2000 Honda CR-V (‘Anna Honda’) started to overheat yesterday, for the first time ever 😢. Being over 50 and disabled makes this especially sucky. I started watching videos hoping I could figure out the prob, and fix it myself. This video reminded me of getting my oil changed a month ago. I wasn’t really listening to the chatty service guy, (big mistake!), now I clearly remember him saying that my radiator cap was shot, and he didn’t have an ‘exact match’ to replace it, but he could ‘make it work’. Yep. My bad! Sooooo, I’m guessing (hoping, praying) that this is what caused the problem. Great video though! Very nice speaking voice, straight to the point, clear, concise, no BS introductory (that nobody wants to watch), and no annoying music (why on Earth do people ruin videos with that!). You have a very interesting repertoire of videos that will no doubt come in handy, so, new subscriber, thanks!

You're welcome, glad to help. And thank you for your kind words and for subscribing. So if he was right I would replace that radiator cap with a new OEM part from Honda Dealer. Shouldnt be but maybe $20 or so. Hope that fixes problem, and keep a close eye on temperature gauge. Could be a lot of things causing overheating issue. But start with that cap 👍

Going to try this. 05 300c. Not overheating. Reservoir goes below low line. Fill it and drive and it goes back down? No smoke from exhaust. Oil smells ok. I do smell it when I start the car on the outside by drivers door. Don't see any leaks. And i park on grass. Going to try a new cap. If it don't work will stick cardboard underneath. Also will check the oil cap for moisture. Thanks for all the great tips. Excellent video. Wish me luck.🤞

Another great tool to invest in is a radiator pressure tester. I have a 07 FJ cruiser that had a bad radiator. I replaced the radiator, hoses, thermostat, and water pump. I made a terrible rookie mistake by clamping the upper radiator hose with gear clamps that were too big. Everything seemed fine when I turned it on and got the air out with a no spill funnel. No visible leaks, but the next day I went for an hour drive and then temp gauge starts going up. I pop the hood open, but I dont see anything. I took the car to a buddy mechanic who had a pressure tester kit and we found it was leaking through the hose with the oversized clamps. Apparently the pressure put on the cooling system isn't great enough when you sit in the driveway. I bought a kit and always use it when working on the cooling system.

Thanks man, my Mazda 3, 2007, was slightly overheating after getting home from work. I looked under the car to check for leaks and seen coolant all over the passenger inside wheel and inside the bumper(like it was leaking and the wheel was spraying it everywhere). I seen my reservoir tank practically empty and put in coolant. I went for a test drive in the neighborhood and got back to a large leak under the vehicle. Jacked it up and wiped all the leakage and it decided to not leak anymore. So, after watching this I'm going to replace the radiator and the water pump as well as any coolant lines that need to be replaced(233,000 miles so why not?). Didn't think of the water pump until watching this so thank you for that.

Sounds like coolant is boiling. Could be a lot of things. Radiator Cap worn and not retaining pressure or overheating due to faulty thermostat, water pump, cooling fan, worn out radiator. Start simplest and go from there 👍🏻

I cannot remove the cap for the life of me. After it over heats I hear a hissing sound bu the are where the cap is..... Could it be as simple as a bad cap??????
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 4 года назад
Yes could be just the cap. Press firmly down on the cap firmly while you turn it counterclockwise to remove on cool engine. You may also want to check your water pump to see if that is the thing that is leaking coolant. Also check hoses for any cracks or leaks the hoses should be Supple but not crunchy or not really soft in certain spots. could also be thermostat getting stuck or radiator. Also check to make sure your cooling fans are working properly. and top up your radiator when it's low not just the reservoir

Start with the radiator cap, then go from there. May be a leaking somewhere else though. After the cap fill it up with water and run it in driveway and try pinpoint leak. Could be bad radiator, hose leak, water pump, thermostat

When you put the coolant into the reservoir, the black one, do you fill it all the way up to the top? Cause when I do it, it tends to leak all over my engine, not much but it doesn't damage my car or anything its just a mess. Once, it goes down and it loses coolant over time, it doesn't do it anymore.

If it leaks when youre not driving it then you just need to pinpoint leak and fix that hose or gasket. If its disappearing while driving thats a whole nother thing. Could be a multitude of problems. But would start with checking thermostat, water pump, radiator cap and lastly if head gasket blowing

Different color coolant wouldnt do that. Boiling coolant could be a lot of things. Bad radiator cap, thermostat stuck shut, water pump going out, air in coolant system. I'd start with thermostat and check if water pump weeping. Could also be bad clogged radiator itself

2002 Toyota Tacoma 3.4 engine. Replace radiator, hoses, thermostat, fluid, and let it run as mentioned, heater on without the radiator cap to purge the system. The top radiator hose gets extremely hot even in the warm up phase to the operating temperature. The bottom radiator hose remains cool to the touch. If I let it warm up more than 5 minutes, top radiator hose it will get way to hot.Water pump and timing belt changed by dealer 15.000 miles back. Any ideas what's happening?
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 4 года назад
@@savnbest4last249 my guess is thermostat. Make sure you bought an OEM Toyota thermostat, and always test in boiling water before installing to make sure it opens and closes normally at right temperature. 2nd thing would be the location of thermostat when installed. On the 3.4L the jiggler valve needs to be at the 6 o'clock position, NOT 12 ( which is most common). I'd start there first.
@savnbest4last249
@savnbest4last249 4 года назад
I figured it out! The overflow tube from the radiator to the reservoir tank was obstructed in the middle of the hose and would not allow antifreeze to flow to or back from the reservoir. When the radiator gets hot, it will open up the radiator cap and push fluid into the reservoir and when it cools down, it will create a vacuum to draw fluid back into the radiator eliminating a vacuum lock that will collapse the top or bottom radiator hoses or both. I was also experiencing a collapsed top radiator hose when the engine cooled down. I believe the blockage allowed the engine to get hotter than it should. Everything working out and just wanted to share it with you and anyone who is curios. Thanks for your response...... Also, it can also happen with just a bad radiator cap.

@JonnyDIY

Could be many things, engine will typically overheat and run hotter going up hills or under heavy load. I would start by checking thermostat, and radiator cap. Make sure coolant topped off. So I just bought a 08 g35s sedan and when I bought it it wasn’t having any issues with the temperature but my second time driving it the temperature seems to fluctuate. It’ll go hot and steam a little bit out the front and never cut off but I pulled over and let it sit for a bit then when I got home I had no coolant. I put 50/50 in and drive it down the road and back and it was completely empty again. My car is a salvage title and was wrecked in the front and the man said he replaced the radiator. From what I can see there is a small hole at the top of my reservoir so I’m not sure if it’s coming out of there. I’ve seen a lot of videos of different possibilities and I’m just not sure what it is.
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 4 года назад
If its leaking all out that fast it either has a leak which you should see idling. If not its burning coolant fast, which could be bad radiator cap, water pump, radiator, or thermostat. Worst case could be blown head gasket, which is entirely possible. Can do a radiator exhaust fume dye test to figure that out. I would start simplest. Radiator or piping could be busted since accident and not noticeable until warmed up. Lot of times no leaks til engine hot. Sorry not a definitive answer but overheating issues have a lot of different possibilities.

Hey. Idk anybody else has asked this yet, but I noticed my coolant level drop slightly. And so I refilled thinking huh that's strange. But then I got curious and saw that it could be something simple like the cap not hold pressure and allowing the coolant level to drop w evaporation. Is it possible that the coolant system has a filter to draw this rubber seal out? What should I do?
