Polls indicate that students new to HEMA sabre still overwhelmingly get their entree into the weapon via Roworth and Hutton's Cold Steel, giving a considerably non-representative view of the complexity and depth of the traditions on offer. The second of a series to help spread awareness of other sources, how to access them, and what one should know about them regardless of whether or not one chooses to use the system.

Great talk! I think the most outstanding quote is "It's totally historic to hit the gym!" 😁

This reminds me of schlagen. Similar to single-stick & backsword when I learned it as a child as a historical rule set. Then I was able to experience in high-school & again in university when I studied abroad in Germany. Its mainly a fraternity tradition & those frat houses are very exclusive. Usually the sabres only have about an inch of sharpen blabe because its a duel to first blood. The refs & seconds are usually professors & military officers the medic was a military surgeon from the medical corp. I also had experience in olympic & historical sabre in fencing Belgium and Netherlands.

Great lecture, thank you! In a lot of ways reminds me of George Silver, and with how I sort of fence saber already; super interesting!

What some of the common characteristics of German cut fencing? I mean Berlier gets discussed here but what common elements are there between the various schools in this region (Feh , Feldmann,Berliner, etc)?

Nice question! As a long time fencer of the Fehn system who now decided to switch to Hornstein (a totally obscure source from my hometown Munich), and who took at least one seminar in Berliner Schule, I would answer this: [Disclaimer: this is not taking into account F. C. Christmann who's system is acually a German-French hybrid] - fighting from a covered guard and staying covered as much as possible is the top priority - extended guard - cuts and moulinets come from the wrist (at least in general) - heavy focus on cuts to head and forearm (in Fehn and Hornstein, all basic cuts go to the head/face) - tendency to lean forward with the upper body to protect the low line and to maximise the protection of the sabre's handguard - high stance compared to Italy and France - little to no retreating footwork (retreat was seen as unmanly, unknightly, and un-German)

Fantastic talk, thanks very much. Is there any sparring footage of this system in action you could point to? I’d love to see it working dynamically.

ru-vid.com Mispeldorn should have video of the system in use.

@@russmitchellmovement Good choice! But watch out: Mispeldorn is mostly training F. C. Christmann's great system which is a system with strong French infuences.
