Notice that the bassoonist has no wrapping on his reed. The reed doesn't leak because very good craftsmanship was used and of course the sound and musicianship clearly shows it. Bravo.

@Nomen Clature The wrapping is really to make it fall down without (hopefully) hitting the tip.

When everyone is talking about circular breathing but its such a bad thing to do on bassoon because its screws with our pitch so much. I would know I've played for 20 years and I choose not to circular breath.

@@sailorcandy6633 It's way worse to be stuck with an excess of air, as opposed to running out of air. I say that as a bassoonist :P

It's circulatory breathing. It's pretty common in jazz. Rahsaan Roland Kirk could do circulatory breathing while playing three saxophones.
@smittywerbenjagermanjensen7027
Jake Fettes It fucks your pitch if you play bassoon, trust me. He wasn't circular breathing.
@christopherchung7814
@christopherchung7814 6 лет назад
there are any bassoonists capable of circular breathing without manipulating the embouchure's control of the reed; if your pitch is suffering from circular breathing, you are storing air too far forward in your cheeks.
@dulcimoo
@dulcimoo Год назад
I'm not so sure ... I can go a LONG time on one breath. Probably about 2 minutes, especially if isn't the bottom octave. Looks to me just one standard breath. Oboes and bassoon don't need a lot of air, just a lot of control.
@jonathanhayward9923

He plays beautifully, but I t’s not circular breathing; his cheeks don’t move. That solo is typically played in one breath. Go and see a live performance of Beethoven 6 and see your local pro play the same passage.

Actually Gustavo is probably breathing just after the camera pans away to the conductor.....40 seconds is not possible in a hall that size, or alternatively he circular breaths in the passage.

Conductor is Bernard Haitink at Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam. Bassoonist is Gustavo Núñez. This recording should be from the 80s.

No, this recording should be from the 5 to 15 years ago, when the Concertgebouw began to stream at decent quality. Nunez wasn't in the orchestra yet in the 80's.
