Program Notes:
This piece was commissioned by Glenn Call (pictured at the right) to encourage and expand the list of new, progressive, mainstream genre works for euphonium. Glenn is the former euphonium soloist with United States Marine Band, “The President’s Own” and has been one of the euphonium giants of his generation. His support for new euphonium music, new musical genres, and the many young euphonium artists is what encouraged the title “On the Shoulders of Giants.” The piece is intended to appeal to the musical taste of a new generation of musicians.
With that in mind, the decision was made to set it in the genre of alternative rock/metal. Throughout his career as a euphonium player, Glenn noticed both that euphonium sound blends very well with strings, as well as the lack of repertoire that contains this combination. This led to substantial use of strings in this composition.
This piece is ideally purposed to be performed by a musician alongside his or her teacher or mentor, and this is the genesis of the piece’s title. It also contains two hidden elements that are tributes to composer’s Lithuanian heritage and his current home, United States. To encourage players to further analyze the structure of the piece, those two melodic elements shall remain unnamed.
The minimalist harmony choice is designed to emphasize the articulations and the use of unpredictable and highly syncopated rhythms. The goal is to create a heavy-sounding (pesantissimo) solo lines, which may be accomplished by allowing the placement of the notes to be on or even infinitesimally behind the beat - in other words, “laying back.”
The soloists should affect a brighter tone and the articulation and dynamic directions should be heavily emphasized to create the desired effect in the opening sections.
The middle section “Moderato doloroso” offers a change in pace. Solo lines should be played semplice, without much affectation. Vibrato should start less prominently and then increase throughout the section.
“Allegro marziale” section should be played as before, “laid-back,” however, the playing should be markedly more leggiero.
The piece has an optional coda which begins at measure 170. As alluded to earlier, when performed by student and his or her mentor, the apprentice (playing Euphonium 1) would remain on stage while the master (playing Euphonium 2) plays the final 24 measures as he or she slowly exits the stage until the sound completely disappears. This metaphorically demonstrates the passing of the torch to the younger generation. One or two of the four passages may be omitted if less time is required to fully exit the space.
Use of special effects, such as wind, thunder, or rain can be incorporated as a choice in the Introduction (through bar 21) and the optional Coda section.

When my beat up cornet became unusable when I was in tenth grade 60 years ago, the band director gave me a brand new euphonium (baritone horn) to play. "Don't underestimate this instrument," he said, "You're going to have some really beautiful stand-out parts to play in music like Colonel Bogey march, English Folk Song Suite, numerous Sousa marches, Holst's First Suite in Eb, and many others. Please practice and take this instrument seriously." He was right! I was ABSOLUTELY thrilled when we two euphonium players got to 'shine' on many of the music pieces we played. I was never, ever close to being the virtuoso you are, though. Enjoyed your playing.

WOW! Amazing. I've heard Glenn Call play with The President's Own while I've been visiting Washington, DC. One tie was a really intimate concert in which the audience sat on the steps of the US Capitol (facing the Supreme Court) and the band was in the driving area right in front of the steps. I spoke to a few members of the band, and I had to gravitate toward the euphonium. THIS PIECE THOUGH. WOW. It's like live performance techno pop played acoustically. Very interesting. The fading at the end was very effective. I loved the notes after the piece. DAMN well done - all of you!

This is phenomenal! I loved the rock/metal pieces on the my war cd and finally this style is back on your channel. Thank you for kind words and absolutely! We'll definitely be doing more of these compositions, they just take a lot of time and resources to produce. This took me almost 6 months from starting composing, to producing recording and sheet music. Make sure to share this with your friends. This would be very helpful for us and encouraging to do more pieces like this. :)

Man that piece is RAW! Man you had me head banging when that rock beat kicked in! Wow your sound on Euphonium and skills are amazing! I used to love playing it in concert band when I was in High School back in '97. I started as a trombone player in middle school and ended up with Euphonium cause a guy sucked at "Second Suite in F - Gustav Holst" which you know is a high demand Euphonium power suite. Had to learn the keys and my band instructor was in awe that I sounded like the player on the CD! Man I miss those days!
