Excellent video! There is another mass grave of Confederate soldiers in the county a few miles from Lewisburg. It’s the county where Gen. Lee purchased his beloved horse, Traveller. These spots are the places so many visitors want to visit. So glad you included the history part and enjoyed your comments.

The drug epidemic and the war on coal hit all of us in southern WV pretty hard, we're self sufficient and don't mind helping our communities to overcome whatever is thrown at us. My first job back in the 1980’s was at the General Lewis Inn in Lewisburg! Highly recommend you check it out. The original part of the Inn, which is now the dining room and two bedrooms above, was a house built in the 1870’s. The Hock family purchased it and built onto it in the late 40’s. They employed the same architect who designed the West Virginia state capital to draw up the design. The place was originally called the “The General Lewis Motor Inn” to take advantage of America’s new found past time of traveling by car. US Route 60, the main thoroughfare, passed in the front. Mr Hocks’ daughter Mary and her husband Jim Morgan took over the Inn in the 1980’s. They updated the place as the “County Inn” became the new rage in lodging in the 80’s and 90’s. I worked there for 6 years in the late 80’s and early 90’s, even met my husband there! The place is under new management now, but still retains a lot of its original flare. Check it out if you’re in town. There is a dining room, single and double rooms and they serve drinks in the living room. Each room is decorated in authentic antique furniture.

@wg4299
@wg4299 Год назад
Hey Mountain Roots! Thanks for responding 😁. Well from waaaaay back in Princeton proper…. our famous battle was the Battle of Pigeon Roost, a victory for the Confederates in defense of Dublin railroad. The burning of Princeton, to deter the union army and prevent the store of supplies from falling into their hands. On the outskirts of Princeton is the abandoned Lake Shawnee Amusement Park, rumored to be haunted. 😬 and the nearby site of the Clay family massacre. More recently, the Virginian railway really had a profound effect on Princeton. Princeton is home to the Chuck Mathena Center for Performing Arts, the Mountain State Baptist Association⛪️ (one of, if not, the largest Southern Baptist Association in WV), the Dr Robert McNutt House (last remaining antebellum structure/house in Princeton….and a funny story to go with it.) The story of the multiple courthouses and the grapple over the county seat after the war. And, of course, the famous Jesse James Gang plan to rob the Princeton bank until he learned of the bank’s Vice Pres’ ties to the Confederacy. Sadly, the home where it went down (or didn’t) wasn’t able to be salvaged and was demolished about 10 years ago. But there are several old homes still standing. Princeton actually had a healing springs hotel too, but it’s long gone now. Thanks for asking! Oh, and Dolly’s Diner and the Sophisticated Hound Brewery are two locals faves 🍔🍻. I’ve missed other stuff, but my reply is already super long 🤣. Keep up the good work!! You’re videos are great!

First, let me say you've got awesome photography/videography/editing skills, which you used beautifully here to tell the story of a cool little town. One nit to pick though: your choice of words in your narration: "Native American rebellions, as they were called…" - It almost sounds as though you think they should not be called that. I encourage you to check out the book "History of the Early Settlement and Indian Wars of West Virginia," published in 1851 (it's on Amazon) - a classic of West Virginia history, containing eyewitness accounts of the shocking and barbaric atrocities perpetrated by Native Americans against settlers, including women and children. When you hear the story from their perspective, calling it a rebellion is being gentle/generous. But again: overall and entertaining and educational video. Thanks
@MountainRoots
@MountainRoots 2 месяца назад
I appreciate the feedback! And no, I don't see it as a rebellion personally. It was a tragic set of complex circumstances all around. History is full of so much brutality. Those who were here before European expansion found themselves directly in the path of an oncoming, immovable force that thrust them aside, with very little pity.

My great grandfather x 6 lived in Lewisburg in the latter 18th - early to mid 19th centuries. He was a carpenter by trade and farmer. There is an example of his work in the museum. All of the male offspring were soldiers in the CSA. Unfortunately, their duties as they saw them were wrongly rooted in the bigoted continuation and expansion of slavery. As a young’un with a youthful admiration and very limited knowledge, I was proud. However, with a little age, knowledge and critical thinking I soon realized the error of their ways. Nice tour of Lewisburg though.

If one wanted to move to WV, where would you suggest?

I suppose that would depend on what you're looking for- this area seems to offer many things but I don't know if it matches the things you would want.

@@MountainRoots That makes sense. I'd like someplace that's quiet, rural, low crime rate. I like small towns. I like to be close enough to a city where I can buy groceries that don't cost an arm and a leg, but I don't want to live in the city. My son and his wife live in the Parkersburg area. From what I understand, there is a good amount of drugs in that area, so I would like to avoid living there.

Buckhannon, Elkins, or Lewisburg. I suggest spending a week in each town. Whatever it is your looking for, you’ll find it in one of these 3 small WV towns……IMHO 😊

@@Jeanniebugg I live in Hillsboro, about 30 minutes north of Lewisburg. Very small town, crime rate is nearly non-existent. We have the best neighbors. Hope you find what you're looking for.

GCW girls dated and some later married Cadets from Greenbrier Military School and both attended the Old Stone Presperterian Church. Your video is good but you missed two of the most historical items in the history of Lewisburg!!!!

I appreciate your thoughts about history. I abhor the republican desire to cancel or re-write it. It's who we were.
