I grew up there, left after high school. I was in the running for this program while making $150k as a remote worker but they didn’t choose me because they wanted people with a heavy social media presence. The people who beat me out are all over Instagram, TikTok, etc. that crap isn’t my thing.
I applied to the Ascend program and was denied. Master's degree, entrepreneur, investment funds. Married with children.. The Ascend program should be renamed the Descend program because it won't end up helping the citizens of WV.
the sad part is the people that are featured here in this video are the ones that will someday make WV no longer affordable. the more money people have the higher the housing will be and food and everything else. the two work hand in hand...the people who live there are not going to be the cash cows for these young business people. remember ? they have little to no money. that's the reason its so cheap.
Rather than stupidity like this, why not have halfway decent paying jobs so people can get out of poverty? That's the reason the population has dramatically decreased. As a lifelong resident of 38 years I urge you to think twice before moving to this place. If I had the financial means me and my family would have been gone long ago.
What do you mean? Are Job opportunities low quality there? I live in California and it’s a joke. Rent is 2300$ a month for a 1 bedroom. I’ll never be able to move forward like this. Im realizing I just need to leave
@@jamesc4196 The problem is that most everything small and good paying are family owned and operated. Fat chance of getting hired. Aside from the $8.25/hour max 20 hour work. Everything else is a large corporation, who isn't based here, and thus could care less about your specific needs.
if i didnt have a family, i'd long be gone living in a tent somewhere else working and saving my money! WV is a blackhole! im not a native, moved here as a child and now stuck here due to lack of opportunity and when people from other states hear you are from WV they deny you IMMEDIATELY! It's beyond my control and infuriating!
West Virginians overwhelmingly voted for Donald Trump (twice). The Governor ran as a Democrat and once elected changed parties to be a Republican. The legislature is mostly Trump Republicans and has tried to pass legislation to be able to override decisions made by the State Supreme Court. "Crooked as a dog''s hind leg" as the saying goes.
My idea will be. Give the money to people who have entrepreneur ideas of building high tech startups. This will help retain young professionals and create high paying jobs in the region.
That's a great idea. We need access to modern jobs instead of the hard labor jobs they keep bringing here. Its sad to see senior citizens working 10-12 hours a day at a warehouse but that is all they bring here. We have a large population of elderly who shouldn't have to live that way.
WV is for the old only, they outnumber everyone else and will continue to stagnate the state. 2nd worst state to live in right behind Mississippi for a reason!
born and raised in massachusetts the second wealthiest state. 46 years old I have seen our state evolve from major industrial revolution to science, technology, lots of daytime office work. high payjng jobs high wages 2 of the biggest colleges in the US Harvard university ( the richest college) followed by MIT those are on the top schools in the US list. but rents are going up sky high home buying can be very expensive. a very diverse state of many cultures. Charleston is way smaller than Boston. construction is everywhere you never know if you will have to move out if the apartment building is sold off for renovation or replace with a new. many of the old public housing is being torn down to build new modern versions. even the worst neighborhoods are getting redeveloped and cleaned up. etc. traffic can be ridiculous. all kinds of stuff for a small state and new England is connected to one another.
@@rabbithole8592 I left WV and moved to a metro area where there were more opportunities and I prospered. Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side.

Sounds like welfare for the affluent I’m 56 how about giving me 20,000 cash and incentives talk about a shot in the arm to my handy man business not to mention my regular job that I work besides my business. Way to go uncle Jimmy
Seriously this is a no brainer. What WV should do is become a retirement state. Get rid of your state income tax and go with a 5% sales tax. Then retirees will come and live there and be taxed 5% on every dollar they spend. The state will accumulate a lot more tax revenue doing it this way. A state income tax doesn't work when jobs and people leave, because you get no tax from them. Also WV should look at what Florida, Texas and South Carolina are doing to make it a tax friendly state for businesses to want to come there and take advantage of incentives that will help them profit. If WV did this, in 5 to 10 years they'd be rolling in the dough. Tennessee did away with their income tax and now tons of people are moving there. West Virginia has cool things active retirees like to do. Hiking, camping, rafting, UTV/ATV riding, hobby farms, moonshine making, cuddling when it gets cold. Seriously that UTV riding down the street into town is pretty cool, not a lot of places around the country are allowed to do that. But the problem with WV is the people themselves. All of them need to stay out of politics and hire professionals from other affluent areas of the country to run their state and their cities. Because honestly West Virginians have done a terrible job maintaining their state. Some of the poorest areas in the country are in WV and they can't blame it on the coal mines leaving, they have only themselves to blame. Lots of trash, blight, old homes that need to be raised to the ground to make way for modern homes that 21st century people want to live in. Problem is in WV, the meth head is the brother of the police chief, who's cousin is the Mayor and his brother in law is the Governor. This crap is killing WV and its potential. Hire people from elsewhere, bring in new ways of running local government and state and really prove to us people with money, WV is a great place to invest in. This can't happen if WV people who've hoarded generations of content is all out in the front yard around their trailer or shack. I'm actually looking at WV for a retirement opportunity. The whole UTV freedom and trail system really tickles my fancy. But with everything else, I'm not impressed, the place is a dump and y'all really need to start cleaning it up. And you can start by enforcing city ordinances on crap in people's yards and taking better care of their houses.
I wholeheartedly agree. WV would be a nice place to live if you got rid of the current legislature..Backwoods thinking doesn't have to be backwards thinking!
Some things I Agree with, some things I disagree....trust me DIVERSITY Sucks...we dont want all of these demokkkrat clowns coming in our state and makeing it blue..No way...leave WV alone we love it here go away
Dont move here its awful. There is a reason we have the highest rate in the country for decrease in population. Schools are shutting down, they abused teachers so they left. They are bringing people in the state (and PAYING THEM!!!) THAT DO NOT WORK HERE. I live in the eastern panhandle and all the trees are gone. The fields are being destroyed for large warehouses that pollute. EPA regulations are rolling back. If you want to give your kids a terrible education and ensure they live in poverty, please come to WV where all your dreams will be shattered. There is a reason everything is cheaper here.
@@Harrygreen111 Yes sir. It’s still available. I am from Charleston. West Virginia has more mountains that any state has. Lots of lakes, Charleston has a river running through it. Beautiful city. Friendly people.
@@stephkodis7690 idk, don’t got any money to rlly explore like that. Though everywhere ive been to has been extremely outdated and overpriced. If you rlly wanna live here happily then a cabin in the woods is the best bet.
@@stephkodis7690 the whole state ain't like that. Let's be honest, everywhere you go in the world will have its problems. It's everywhere. Not just here in WV. Recently moved back NC and I don't regret it one bit.
I lived in the northern panhandle the first 22 years of my life. It's a beautiful state with the nicest, most hard-working people you'll ever meet. It broke my heat to leave. But there's nothing there for you if you don't have an inside route to the mines or chemical plants or if you don't have land for the companies to drill on.
You better not miss 🤷♂️ WV is an open carry stand your ground state but having your feelings hurt doesn’t entitle you to self defense deadly force. Better develop a thicker skin if you’re wanting to move there. Oh and by the way WV’s reputation precedes itself, people there are exceedingly kind, perhaps if you assume the state has a racism problem it’s you that had the problem
