If you like tweaking sails, sailing drone shots, and MacGyver like mechanical repairs while bashing upwind this video is made for you!!! With our shakedown cruise complete it’s time for Delos and her crew to leave Grenada behind and begin our exploration of the Grenadines. The guys from Precision Sails in Canada join us for a day sail and we set off towards Carriacou. Delos gets her new mizzen hoisted and we spend a few hours tweaking the leach, halyard, and foot tensions until we get it just right and she is flying along, bashing to windward at good speed.
Nearly to our destination the conditions become unfavorable for sailing and we crank up the “iron genny” to make our anchorage before sunset. After a few minutes of motoring steam starts spewing form the engine room and we’re forced to shut down the engine. A quick inspection reveals the engine has overheated due to a faulty raw water impeller. Brian springs into action using spare parts aboard to overhaul the pump as Delos bashes her way upwind, tacking towards Carriaou. We arrive just in the knick of time and find a very sweet anchorage in Carriacou.

As much as I have loved the story of the crew all these years, this particular episode reflects very well on your love of SV Delos, herself. Your editing - and the much appreciated drone footage effort - really puts her in great light. For me, a classic SV Delos, surely - as it has the essence of the entire experience. If you love this episode too, and haven't yet done so, start from the beginning and watch in order. When you get back here, you might know better what I'm ranting about. Well done, SV Delos crew, and shall she long sail free!

Delos is BACK back :) Absolutely everything from the days of old was present in this episode. The filming, narrating, editing and especially the drone shots. Delos is so beautiful, and your Canadian sail makers are just bloody awesome. Their sails have turned Delos into aerodynamic sleek beast. Gratz Kazza and Brian on becoming parents, a new adventure awaits. I cannot wait to see that one unwind ............here??? Love you guys, you are the best by far :)

A little bit of grease on the impeller helps with the first start up until the water gets there to lubricate it. It just might help it last longer for you.

When you get an impeller failure check for broken pieces in the hoses both upstream and downstream of the pump, when the pump looses suction some bits will drop back, I found that the hard way. If it feeds through a cooler usually you will find a collection at the start of the tube stack. An exhaust temperature alarm sensor epoxied just aft of the raw water injection point will tell you if you have a failure or blockage before any major engine overheating. Good job doing the full service on the pump!

Brady. You asked about belt tension. Typically shouldn't have more then 1/2" of play when you push on it. There is actually a tool to check the tension of a belt. Doubt most people even know they exist.

Old salty sailor taught me once to add dish soap in the impeller housing and before you attach the discharge hose to pour water in to prime the pump action. Seeing the soap over the side at your discharge lets ya know ya got the thing turning and pumping. Sea friendly soap of course. Learned a new trick that day and I've never stop learning new stuff at sea. Thanks for sharing your "how to's" guys..I really like those episodes.
@briane9729
@briane9729 4 года назад
I was taught the same, its the same issue with bearings, those first few moments of use, heat, and friction matter to the longevity of the part. Good initial lube is important, dish soap and water help lubricate the impeller until the water starts flowing, keeping it from heating up, and they heat up quick without water!

Maybe it's time to have a preventative maintenance schedule for your sea strainer..should not be getting that much stuff past the basket. Lube the impeller with dish soap, and orient blades in direction of rotation. Have two complete pump assembly's, in case of failure, just swap them out, and rebuild at your leisure. Impellers should be changed out every 12 months or whatever hour the engine manufacturer specifies..usually 500 hours.. On the boats I run, I do all impellers every 12 months, rarely get to the hour requirement...very rarely do we lose an impeller underway..Fair Winds!!!

jabsco impeller pumps like a tad of silicone lube, just for initial lubing during the first dry run. Running it with out the lube will most likely not be an issue tho, but it will never hurt. If you have a dab, use it :)

Seems like no one else commented it so maybe I'm wrong, and I'm not an expert, but I was always taught to use a little lube on the impeller and to make sure it is going the right way. The reason for the lube is so that it doesn't run dry during the few seconds it takes for water to get pulled in to it which can damage the vanes. Actually, what happened to you with the air in the system is one time when that's even more important since it wound up running dry a bit longer. No idea how much it matters and no big criticism...you guys do a great job!

Although I’m always happy to see that Brain can fix everything I want to make a small comment this time. Brady was right, you should have greased the impeller with a little soap before mounting it. This gives it its lubrication for those first minutes when no water is flowing through the pump, Now you had the risk of overheating the impeller in those first minutes. And yeh, impellers should be changed every year. The rubber gets old and it will fail, always on an unexpected moment.

On my Perkins 4-236 I had a sea water flow alarm after the raw water filter. i highly recommend it for your operations. Some are adjustable. I also had a 205 F overtemp switch instead of 225. I also had a temp gauge. I set out to cross to the Bahamas one night and the alarm went off. There was a cluster of Sargasso weed seeds stuck in the intake of the sea water filter. Cheap protection.

I got so tired of jacking with impellers on my Yanmar, I installed a filtered electric water pump to cool the engine. No more worries. the only problem was find a belt that fit the new setup without the impeller drive. Just a 12v RV water pump identical to the one that pressurizes water for sinks and showers. More energy efficient as well. relay controlled house-water pump would switch it over anytime the engine water temp rose about 196. Set off a visual and audible alarm at the helm. cheap RV parts same stuff as "yacht" parts but with redneck prices.

Great episode guys and gals! I liked every topic you covered. As to the underwater volcano problem, I realized that one of your favorite things can help explain the problem. That thing is BEER. In a big enough glass try floating a tiny model boat on the "head" (aka foam). Unless it is light as a feather the tiny boat will sink. Besides that I'm glad you got your motor running again. Seems like that rubber impeller has failed at least 4-5 times over the years - from what I remember. Somebody could make some money inventing a better system.

@@mwatkins2464 English is not my first language. I understand that not everyone can understand what I mean. Or I may also have difficulty understanding other people. It's just that I have a great sympathy for Delos from the moment I started watching them 3 years ago. I can say I am a fan (in a good sense of the word). And thanks for the compliment of course. ))

So, before this I watched the Sailing Scholarship vid. Based on that, Brady should have been in the hole and Brian giving him instruction on how to fix the problem. Hands on better than watching........

nice update! A small tip for the amazing drone flying, to ensure good signal quality keep those antennas pointed flat side to the drone, not to the ground. You guys rock! Greetings from Greece

The "leaving friends" parts remind of the best parts of the film Captain Ron. I am certain that Blue is correct. You will be welcome around the world forever.
