Sailing With SV Delos! This is our story, a story of three souls sailing around the world. It is a story about sailing and travel and adventure. But it's also a story about meeting amazing people and making life long friends. It's a story of people living their lives in an alternate way, in close connection with the beautiful people and amazing planet that we call home. Our experience has affected us so profoundly we want to share it, hoping that others may find inspiration to follow their dreams and do what they love.
Another great video guys. The anticipation for the flip is driving me nuts. Your explanations, and Dan's, of what you're doing are the best. On and on...
This is an awesome build… However, I do have a question. How do you propose to handle the dilemma of stray currents- being all aluminum… it’s almost as if your vessel is one huge conductor
seems so strange that the longeron wouldn't have a beam going into the hull to connect it to the frame.. seems like it does on the plans.. but maybe that's a top plate since it's upside down... that would make sense then it's like an upside down L shape around the front .. the number 18 on plans points inside it.. the top plate seems to flare out.. maybe to spread the connection stresses.. weight at the end would pull the top plate connection and push or compress the longeron welds to the body.. almost thinking there should be a bottom plate too.. making it like a sideways U shape.. but with the shape of hull doesn't make sense i guess.. but seems like it will have a ton more downward strength then upward strength without it. but with the beams at the end i guess it's super strong... anyways.. it's probably impossible to understand what i mean.. just found it interesting
After watching everything up into current times, coming back to see these earlier videos is such a trip! Such a grand adventure! Cackling about Brady and his greenman suit!
It is pretty cool! Are you going to rig it with something like dynema? I mean the synthetic stuff ,I don't know how to spell it. I got to go to work but you'll have good luck
Hi Brian As an Australian I am very pleased to see you building the new Delos in AUS You have found tradesmen that build with their hart and are prepared to put their name on it forever. With you working alongside them you will know every facet and will understand everything about your boat. The Australian Navy does the same thing with their ships and submarines the engineering crew are on site every day of construction. Well done. The finish of the radius’s are excellent. In 2018 I was at the Sydney boat show and got to speak to the amel people and they said that you were going to do just what you are doing. An expedition aluminium cat. Only one thing, isolate the hull from the water even if you use a clear product. Cathodic protection will have to be exact. They use a device in Bering Yachts please explore this Alexei knows his stuff. As it just isn’t your boat but in mariners with free energy being created. This is the only Chanel to make building a boat interesting well done 👍 Regards from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks so much John, and yes we absolutely love knowing that we will know every single inch of this boat inside and out! Glad you're finding the videos interesting it's been a fun challenge for us to try and make the build come to life in this way! Sending lots of love to Tasmania!
I find this to be a naive design - lacking strength, internal volume and buoyancy in the bow - all because generic cat designs copy the Tornado (for no good reason) (max speed is proportional to hull length only) - at this stage, the priority is to FULLY triangulate the load points for the rigging (front stays) (not via an empty hull space and through hull fixings)
Awesome Aussie tradies doing an amazing job. You have made a great decision getting your new home built there. Seriously awesome fabrication skills on display.
Getting closer to the flip. The build is looking fantastic. And they say us Aussies don't know anything - just goes to show doesn't it. Great work Dan and Team - as well as the Dalos 2.0 team.
Flip is coming up not next week but the week after, can't wait to share that with you it's crazyyyyyy!!! Thanks for following along on the build with us and stoked you're enjoying the vids!
I dont know if this has been asked before but here we go , Maybe do a episode fully talking with the crew building the boat an ask them how they feel with the owners there while there building the boat , ultimate interview per say
Every shot that shows these beautiful, perfect welds, amazes me. The computer assisted cutting of the parts is a separate marvel, but the human contribution that unites the pieces and creates the boat is truly amazing. The skill of the welder makes all the difference!
Building this boat really is such a cool intersection of a precise/mechanical aspect, and it's also an art at the same time! It's been such a cool process and we've learned an unbelievable amount...and we're just getting started! Thanks so much for following along on the build with us Jeff, stoked to have ya with us!
Actually Brian, I didn't see his "riding" as being of a horse.... Ever see Slim Pickens in Dr Strangelove? Slim Pickens rides the Atomic bomb being dropped over Moscow.. An old classic from the 60's, during the cold war.
Kazza -- If one listens carefully, it's clear that you're picking up some Oz accents here and there. Good on ya, Mate! But the best thing for this Yank is hearing Dan say "laser level" at 17:29 -- that's poetry!
How are you dealing with the steel anchor chain sliding inside the aluminum longeron? Won’t you get iron particles imbedded in the aluminum causing corrosion inside the tube? Just curious.
@Brian: You mentioned the heat of welding "anneals" some of the strength heat treatment added to this type of aluminum, and this must be accounted in the design. AFAIK, the general rule is that stronger materials are more brittle, likely to fracture when over-stressed; "weaker", more maleable materials tougher, more likely to bend and not break. Isn't this mitigating, if not desireable, in your welds?
Wow Brian, since following you a few years back, now that I see you are building this awesome Cat, I wonder how your skills towards ship building and making aluminum repairs when you come into ports will differ as opposed to glasswork on the ol' sailboat.
How do you relieive all the stresses of assembly on the boat? There have been lots of pulls, pushes, and hammers everywhere. I learned a new phrase in this episode, and it's a keeper. 😉
Brian& Kazza, As a builder, and craftsman, i am enjoying this series so much. Delos 2.0 is going to be such an amazing creation. Dan is such a master boiler. YOU GUYS ROCK!❤❤❤
