It's nice to see a young couple taking the time to do things right. Adding colour is nice, so many boats are all wood and so dark inside. You two have great chemistry, look forward to watching each week.

Thank you! Yeah seeing as we’ll be the ones living on it we wanted to make it feel not too much like a boat but more like a home. As beautiful as some of the more traditional boats are lined in stained pine cladding it’s not something we would have

I'm saying this as a caravaner Joe and caravans use a smaller bore version of that ridged blue pipe for all the drainage. That stuff is horrible for collecting debris, blocking and smelling. I know it is flexible, but IMHO it is more trouble than it is worth.

Making hard work of the plumbing Joe, and you may need shallow traps on both outlets or a running trap on your basin as you have a trap for your sink, to stop the bugs and the cold outside air getting in. Height wise, ever thought about a Saniflow (small tanked pump out) for sink wastes then your not tied to or governed by the water line in regards to your units heights.
@ItsOhJoe
@ItsOhJoe 2 года назад
We’re just trying to keep the system as simple as possible, less wiring etc and if the saniflow froze over etc. Will look into using solvent with shallow traps as a few of you have advised against the flexi, although the blue pipe is smooth on the inside.

hi guys found your channel a few weeks ago and have now been binge watching the boat build ever since and finding it entertaining well done on what you have achieved so far. I am a timeserved carpenter & joiner of 25 years originally from Swindon Wiltshire now residing in Sofia City Bulgaria for the last 14 years but now thinking of returning to the UK in 2022 and buying a narrowboat to live on which I was going to do before I moved to Bulgaria. I have noticed on your build when you roped the floor joints that you have effectively closed off any air flow under the floor which could cause damp to build up due the coldness of the bottom of the hull if you drill some small holes say 50mm in different areas of the floor with plastic air vent covers on them this would help with air flow, this is only a suggestion but think it will help to combat the build up of damp mould forming

Another great video. Quick tip for fitting wood against an uneven surface. Find a small metal ring you can insert your pencil in, with the wood pressed up against where you want it to go, run the ring along the wall and the pencil will drawn to the shape of the wall.
@ItsOhJoe
@ItsOhJoe 2 года назад

@shogun666able
@shogun666able 2 года назад
Thinking on Jo if you went Saniflow you could lower your bath for you to stand in to shower, but may need a non-return valve in that line to stop the waste water from the sink and basin back filling into the bath.so any arrow pointing towards the Saniflow or of course figure the Saniflow in or part into the bilge somehow. Saniflow's don't need much of a electric supply if just for waste water as it has only a small pump, but of course your inverter will easily take care of that once your on board with the batteries turned on.
@ItsOhJoe
@ItsOhJoe 2 года назад
The backfilling issue was why we wanted to go with two separate outlets, one for the bath which is pumped out automatically by a whale gulper IC and then let gravity work it’s magic to keep things simpler for the basin and sink. Judging by people’s thoughts on flexi wastes we’ll be fitting solvent weld now!
@shogun666able
@shogun666able 2 года назад
@@ItsOhJoe As said Joe, if your pumping anyway gives you the option to lower everything, even your bath, and tank it if needs be with some diverter valves on the outlet, if you use the underfloor over worrying about the waterline level. If you go solvent weld of any size make sure you have plenty of cleaning eye tees you can easily get at, preferably on every bend.

Personally I think you would be better installing the wash basin waste in proper plumbing push fit waste pipe and fittings. The pipes have smooth walls , less likely to collect deposits and block up the pipes

Hi Dani and Joe, I love the bathroom and kitchen sinks. I always think the boats look dark inside, so the green paint makes it look dark to me. A lighter brighter shade might help bring the sunshine in.☺️ Just my thoughts. Have a great New Year, safe and healthy.
@sueboh59
@sueboh59 2 года назад
This is very true for boats. Ours was painted green under the gunwales and looked so dark, so we painted it a light grey. We also painted the red pine above the gunwales white to make it even brighter. Looks fab now
@ItsOhJoe
@ItsOhJoe 2 года назад
Thank you Penney. There’s not a massive amount of green that will be exposed, half of that wall will be behind kitchen units so that will break it up a bit. With the light wooden floor and white ceiling we think it’ll work - hopefully! 😂
@peterclarkson7317

Bit of a pain having to constantly move things around for access, but there is never enough room in a boat. Think I would have gone with a smooth bore pipe as it won't collect any muck in it which could lead to smells, especially for the kitchen sink.. Looking forward to seeing the finished boat. Happy New Year to you both
@ItsOhJoe
@ItsOhJoe 2 года назад
Yeah especially now the walls are up it’s a real challenge! The blue pipe is smooth on the inside but may look into using solvent throughout now as looks like a few people have had issues with the flexi wastes

If your cooling system has a radiator cap then its a sealed system that boils at a higher temperature than an open system (like a kettle). If you've a leak then your cooling water boils at atmospheric pressure and your engine overheats.

It has been a superb series of vlogs this year and fantastic progress made on the boat. Well done to you both. Check thermostat for overheating. Water should not flow into your skin tank when engine is cold, but since there is no calorifier yet, seems like there could be no cooling. Or thermostat might not be opening.
@ItsOhJoe
@ItsOhJoe 2 года назад
We changed the thermostat and that seemed to fix it but now with the leak in the elbow I think it’s letting air in and causing an air lock. The boat originally had a colorifier but we have removed the old header tank for that and capped off where it connected. The engine isn’t original which doesn’t help suss out where the pipes should or shouldn’t go!

If it is a bmc 1.5 diesel the correct thermostat housing (with the correct angle) is available from Lansing Marine at a reasonable price. Your existing housing may have a part no on it, such as BL4. So the lowest point is still the exit through the bulkhead fitting, so unless you fired a hose pipe down the basin it’s unlikely to rise all the way back up through the sink outlet. I did toy with the idea of a non return valve but thought it was a weak point for debris to build up in the future

Could you not find a new / replacement thermostat housing? Also are you sure the impeller is spinning properly on the pump? The other thing i can't see is the full cooling system. Your skin tanks are radiators / heat exchangers not as such holding tanks. Your header tank should hold a head of water to allow the pump to push water through the system. The pipe you presently have your sensor in should be connected to the lower outlet from the skin tank. The hot water enters the top is cooled by the canal through the boat skin then as the cooled water drops to the bottom for the pump can push ot back through the engine. If you have not water in the header tank the engine will have no water to be able to heat to allow the stat to open. Hopefully I'm not teaching you to suck eggs. N good luck sorting it.
@ItsOhJoe
@ItsOhJoe 2 года назад
Thanks for your comment, not at all on sucking eggs I’ve always struggled to understand these cooling systems! Have you got an email address I could send a couple photos of our system over to you to double check on where the pipes should run? As this is how the pipes were rigged up by who we bought the boat off but the engine isn’t original and the calorifier has been removed so it’s a bit of a minefield on what belongs where!

It’ll be our main accommodation but we have plans to travel quite a bit still so boat may be left in a marina for a month or two at a time throughout various times of the year

Hi looking at your overheating problem it looks to me at the very quick flash of a look that we get you have a skin tank and that pipe that is connected to the top of the tank is fitted to the water pump this is wrong the pipe that fits to the water pump must come from the bottom of the skin tank if not it will just suck air and over heat
@ItsOhJoe
@ItsOhJoe 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment, do you have an email address I could send some photos across of the system? I’ve never really understood the cooling systems on these boats and not one seems to be the same. This did have a calorifier fitted historically but it’s been removed from the system

@@ItsOhJoe Hi sorry it's took so long to get back to you but I have watched every vlog you have done on the boat and you have two skin tanks one each side and all the pipe connections are at the top so without speaking to the person that fitted the skin tanks or actually being there to investigate I cannot be sure if it is piped up correctly pictures will not help. So two questions Q1 have you ever used this boat without it overheating(if the answer is yes then the boat was originally working correctly and it is probably something you have done) Q2 have you altered the position of any of the four pipes that go to the tops of the two skin tanks(if the answer is yes then that's the problem put them back as it was and try again) Don't be fooled by the fact all four pipe connections are at the tops of the tanks there should be internal pipes to get the water from the bottom that is why you don't alter the pipes around they must go on in a certain order to work properly. The fact it use to have a calorifier will not make any difference as long as the pipes are either connected together and are lower then the engine or are blocked off

@@bigKDL Thanks for getting back to us! On our first journey of any real length it did overheat, that turned out to be a seized thermostat (rusted completely). We removed the thermostat whilst waiting for a new one to arrive and it seemed to stay cool (although at this point we didn't have a temp gauge setup!). Since being in the marina we installed a temp gauge (although sender appears to be in the wrong place - in the cold feed) - so now i'm hoping it's the leak in the elbow of the skin tank allowing air in and causing an airlock. This is being fixed soon and then i'll be able to put the temp sender in the right place - then leave it running and watch it get up to temperature. Also yeah the pipes have all been fitted to where they were fitted when we bought the boat.

@bigKDL 2 года назад
@@ItsOhJoe thanks for the reply when your man turns up to weld that elbow there should be a long pipe down to the bottom of that tank to pick up the colder water so he should be able to check that for you also the pipe across the boat between the two tanks should be as straight and level as you can make it

I presume the heat exchanger on the engine does not have a tube stack in it?

@@ItsOhJoe That is correct for your setup. If it had been used in a sea going boat it would have had a tube stack in there. Was concerned someone had re-purposed the engine and left it in there.

@@ItsOhJoe As you see it Joe as if your pumping one you may as well pump them all which won't which won't matter about the water line level in regards to heights of anything. Plus give you the option to tank grey water by a few valves if the regs. change about grey water discharge or your in a marina. I maybe wrong as I have never used a Vevor but most others take care of any back feed, as nearly all have two inlets and if in the floor like your larders, say under your bed maybe, I doubt you would have one anyway. Looking at your video it looks like Danni will need a hop up to use the basin, which you could then obviously drop everything in height and would only need one hole though the side for the lot. As you see it matey.
