I have been using that overpass for years, never been hassled. If that had been me, I'd have requested the officer's badge number and spoken to the police department, making specific note of the Sheriff who had given you permission to be there just minutes before. At least you got most of the train...
Actually, everyone was wrong. That shoulder next to the bridge is for emergencies only, making both the Sheriff wrong for giving you permission, and you wrong for parking there in the first place. And the officer was wrong for how he handled it too. No excuse for being a dick. IF you had parked somewhere safe and legal and walked to the bridge to film, I'd be all for you. But as it is, as far as that town is concerned, you're just another entitled asshole railfan who thinks the traffic rules don't apply to him. This behavior basically innocent as it is, is what makes railfanning a "crime" in much of the country anymore. You get caught pointing a camera at a train outside of a railfan park, you can be harassed by the cops and have your gear stolen (confiscated). It's pretty much been like this to various degrees around the country since 9-11. It seemed to me to have eased up for a few years, but it turns out that I had just been away from the tracks for a long time working to much to actually go take pictures. Be careful where you choose to shoot from, and NEVER use a bridge without a sidewalk! As it is, it's only a matter of time till a pissed off railfan gets shot by a cop.

I'm going to piss off some good officers at this point by pointing out that the job of the police USED to be to serve and protect the community and they treated "their" citizens with courtesy and respect. That is ALL GONE now, with the exception of a few good officers. Cops are now tools of government to raise money and keep the rabble (formally known as citizens) in their place. They are vastly outnumbered and afraid. So yes, a cop is going to piss off a "railfan" and the unfortunate WILL happen. You can't point a "real" camera at much of anything in sight of a cop without getting into "trouble" with him of one sort or another. As much as I hate to be the guy that says this, parking and standing on a bridge like this is prohibited by the law. In a case like this it’s honestly the personal preference of the officer that sees you doing it. Some places I’ve been seen but nothing was done about it, and others I’ve been told to leave. Finishing it, my personal recommendation is to not hangout on a place like this unless you’re in a giant crowd of people. If you’re by yourself, wait until the train is almost there, get out of your car, grab your shot, and go. Easiest way to not get caught shooting from overpasses.
I've been railfanning from overpasses for years (specifically in one certain town), and had countless cops come by and just ask politely if I was all good. Only one, yes one, of them made me leave, and 2 other ones I encountered didn't make me leave, but suggested that it was somewhat unsafe where I was. I can respect that. One was in the winter when the roads were slippery. The one that made me leave was just bs'in me. Tried to say the overpass was federal property or somethin.
I typically find a public parking spot and film from my car. I rarely ever get out and use my tripod anymore. I mean, if Wide World of Trains can do it, shit, why not? Lol 🤣 I had one idiot flip me off because he thought I was filming him, but I was actually filming the train. I had to point at the train to get him to understand, but he just yelled at me. Whatever, buddy.

I got cops called on me because i was standing with a video camera tripod and my friend while we were standing in a parking lot filming a train like why why do people call the cops on us for having a hobby it like that post about the woman asking someone why can't they just rail fan at home it's because train don't go through our homes like that should be obvious

It is against the law in GA to stop on a bridge, In a car or as a pedestrian. In this case, this bridge is clearly marked with signs, which the railfan walked past, and stopped on the bridge of the overpass with a camera set up, after parking next to no parking signs, which go up and down the overpass. Do your own research if you'd like to know which laws. I drive over this overpass several times a day. Google street view might even show the signs. It's not the police getting on to a railfan for filming his first amendment. It's the police having to deal with another dumbass who can't follow simple instructions, Or set the camera up at the area the city of Folkston built specifically for train watching, with wifi and bathroom. The officer could have given him a citation or taken him into custody, but did not.
Yep, I found it on Street View... there's a no parking sign down the ramp a little and then closer to the bridge is a "No sitting on bridge" sign. Pretty clearly marked. If cops hassle you when you're hanging out somewhere that has no indication that you shouldn't be there, that's one thing. This is just blatantly ignoring signs. I probably did the same thing a couple times when I was younger but I'm going on 30 now and had enough run-ins with the cops years ago to know generally where is and isn't a good place to hang out (and even then I still get the cops called on me, but much less than I did years ago). Haven't hung out on an overpass that didn't at least have a sidewalk on it for a long time now.
The train watcher is breaking the law, it is the cop's business. It's against the law to stop on a bridge in GA, either as a pedestrian or in a vehicle.

Then if you'll look on Google maps street view, the train watcher not only parked next to a no parking sign, he walked past signs saying no to sit on the bridge. This incident takes place on GA hwy #121, on the overpass where it meets GA Hwy #4. The law can easily be googled as well.

So the cop isn't looking to just screw with someone. The train watcher was not following the signs placed there by the State of Georgia D.O.T. Kind of like a wrong way sign, or no u-turn sign. There for a reason. Not enough shoulder space to park your vehicle on or stand on. It's a safety risk. It's better to find a bigger parking spot and a more secluding and less traffic overpass. In this case, the officer was performing his public safety duty.

Thought the USA was a free country, this would never happen in the UK or Europe, Cops might think us railfans and aircraft photographers a bit weird sometimes, but 99.9% of the time you are left in peace.

Calls have been made to this county’s police department regarding whether it’s legal or illegal to stand on that overpass. It is legal and everything this guy was doing in the video was legal. I don’t exactly remember the street name. But it was on an overpass looking into yomean yard. And a cop told us 10 minutes before the other cop pulled that we were fine.

There are signs prohibiting one from sitting on the bridge of the overpass. Two facing each direction. As well as no parking signs up both sides of the overpass. Best not to, stop a car next to a no parking sign, get out onto the bridge of the overpass and set up a camera. The cop had him move off the overpass. Could have given him a citation or something, but did not.

There are signs on the bridge of the overpass that prohibit being on the bridge of the overpass, and there is also literally a law which prohibits a pedestrian from just stopping on a bridge. The bridge of the overpass is posted against stopping on the bridge, pedestrian or vehicle traffic. It is against the the law to stop on a bridge, pedestrian or traffic. Not to mention he parked his vehicle next to the no parking signs leading up to the bridge.
