Had a neighbor who flipped auction cars when I was growing up, he frequently used license plates to fix rust or damaged parts... So apparently this is common with some people but still shocks me that people do that, using silicon is the icing on the cake!

On the e39 540 I the timing chain or the vanos is going out. Kind of expensive repair, guess you could do it yourself, would give great videos.

That V6 Genesis sedan is no slouch. It has 333hp and does 0-60 in 5.4 & does the 1/4 in 13.8 😎 My wife had one for a rental that same color and it was a very impressive car.

The rattling on E39 is probably the timing chain guides. Notorious for that. Probably missing the CD Changer or Nav unit in the trunk

That Genesis is the same year and trim as mine, but with a bit more mileage on it. I still love our Genesis v6 even though it's now my wife's daily driver. I hope you get that vehicle just to see how the restoration goes.

An episode filled with High mileage (seemingly) poorly maintained German cars. It has been said by many, "The most expensive German car, is a cheap German car" all of these look like trouble to me.

The M - Sport 540 2003 is the rarest e39 you can buy. They only imported a few hundred of them in that specific package. There are under 100 manual variants in the US too.

The timing chains on BMW V8s of that era were know for issues. Although the sound not changing with the RPMs would say otherwise as you mentioned.

Ya, dosen't quite sound like it, but M62b44 timing guides. They can be done in a day or two at home, you can rent the timing tools. Kinda big job, but much satisfaction for DIY

Had a 04' 540i M Sport with the manual same car basically and it was fun to drive but ended up selling it because timing chain guides were goin badd! Definetley recommend these cars and would love to get another! The rattle is from chain guides

Timing chain guides and vanos are shot. Vanos could be a vacuum leak, but not likely. You’d have to take the whole front end part to access and fix.

Randy, I'm pretty sure that license plate on the Toyota was sealing up a vent that is normally there. They might have been abusing the crap out of the car to the point that they were getting water coming up through it.

Genesis would be a good one depending what it goes for. E39 V8s are pretty sweet cars that are right at the bottom of their price curve atm and good examples like that are becoming desirable. The sound is probably timing chain guides, a fairly common issue on the BMW V8s. You could DIY it, but if not I wouldn't bother, the shop price for that job is at least a couple grand.

You need to use a stethoscope on the Beemer, That will help you zero in on the source of the noise,, :-)

Good morning auto auction rebuilds

Get the BMW warm up, if start smoke then you have problem with oil separator it takes oil from sump to separator on near side and from there air go to vacuum and oil go to vanos. Ebay kit for this is 40£ so 60$ and its about 3 hr job which you could do yourself. Only trouble is for how long has been run like this to get to this stage and how much damage it caused to the chain as faulty separator reduce lubrication to chain and we all know how this ends

The 540i needs timing chain guides. They also tend to leak from the valve covers due to warping. May need new covers to fix the leaking. Those cars take too much to get 100%

Man Randy it’s ok to like the old Bimmers. The cars with the six banger motors are dead reliable, you can confidently buy 6 cylinder naturally aspirated BMWs built before 2003 no matter the mileage, even 300k as long as they had oil changes. That was back when BMW meant quality and not technology. The V8 in the 540 was the same way to a certain extent, although they did tend to have timing chain issues. I would still be interested in that car though Randy, don’t let the BMW badge scare you, I promise you before they had iDrive they really were good cars.

shout out to that legacy doing its job. looks like it rearended a giant pickup truck. its hit was high and damn did it do a good job at mitigating the energy away from the pillars. sure that sucked but they walked outta that collision instead of being pulled out to have months of rehab and possibly life changing injuries.

If you look back at the grand pre the driver side rear tire is buckled in

540 BMW easily will need a complete cooling system, cam chain guides and complete engine gasket set. Vanos will need to be rebuilt and shortly later it will need a trans rebuild. Pretty much any BMW will need those items at least.

On video the noise in the BMW sounds like an exhaust leak between the head and the exhaust manifold.

The sound in the e39 is the timing guides failing. Expensive fix but you can do it. The car is worth something it being 139k on it, and it b being a 540. The thing missing on the trunk is the CD changer.

8:40 The Drive clutch is out. I hat the same problem, but with reverse on my bmw, this happens when you put Drive in while the car is still mousing in reverse. The cheapest would be a used transmission. Fluid is not the problem.

Stay away from that BMW, sounds like there's a ticker tape machine under their hood. I was waiting for Walter Cronkite to come out of there and start the evening news.
