How to get from CPH Airport to the city centre? It's easy! Getting from Copenhagen Airport to the city centre can take as little as 13 minutes! In this video, I'll show you exactly how to take the train and the metro and warn you about the taxis as they're costly 💸
I'm Kris - a Danish travel blogger and tour guide. I used to run my own travel agency, and I'm a massive travel-planning geek 🤓
I live in Copenhagen, so CPH Airport is the main airport I always go to. It's one of the best airports in Europe, and it's such a breeze to get the metro straight from the arrival hall to the city centre in only 13 minutes!
If you've got any questions about your trip to Denmark, please let me know - and remember to check my travel blog at Destinationwellknown.com for more travel tips to Copenhagen and plenty of other destinations worldwide 🌎

IMPORTANT INFO regarding the train: in this video, I state that you can get any train from platform 2 if your destination is Copenhagen Central Station. That is no longer the case - there are now a couple of trains every hour that do NOT stop at the Central Station. Most trains do, but make sure you check the screens before boarding the train 🤝

The Central Station has a lot of charm. Cleaner and safer than in some Belgian Railways Stations. At the end I used my CPH card during my first visit in July 2023. And the metro has easier, arrived nearly closed to the hotel 🙂

The City Pass is really convenient and so easy to take from the airport terminal. We would definitely say the metro but if you land at night be careful, they sometimes close the metro for a couple of hours (maintenance) and they especially don't communicate that in their app or website 😉.
@TorIverWilhelmsen
@TorIverWilhelmsen 11 месяцев назад
It seems the DOT Tickets app also is usable for visitors (no requirement for a national phone number like such apps used to have - I was able to use my Norwegian one for registering), like buying a City Pass if you are staying a few days and want the freedom to just jump on and off local transport. So even less reasons to use the ticket machines unless you want a souvenir :)

Hi Chris! Thanks for this visual guide! I'll be flying into CPH with a 3.5 hour layover so I'm researching how to take the Metro toward Nyhavn via Kongens Nytorv, take selfies along the canal, and then ride back toward the airport for my onward flight to Dublin. It'll be my very first time in Denmark, ever! And it wasn't even supposed to happen, but SAS unceremoniously modified my layover (was ARN, now CPH). And I thought well actually, I might like the change!

Copenhagen trainstation is a historic station dated back to 1847. Looking at the scale of how many people going trough this great hall visiting Copenhagen, i'd like everybody watching this, exhale and wonder. Wonder about how they this wonderfull building was build in the late 1900 century. It is the only way we ignorant people of today, has a chance to see what history made possible. Just stop for 5 seconds. Look up, all handmaid. That is what exploration is about.

I went to Copenhagen about 7 years ago from London. The area around the ticket machines was a total mess with building work but there were plenty of assistants on hand who spoke English to help me. I took the train, no delays, and my hotel was about 5 minutes walk from the central station so it was a short and easy trip. If go again, I'd like to try the metro but it may depend on where my hotel is. You should also mention the Blue Planet Aquarium near the airport. Maybe the metro wasn't build when I was there becasue I had to take quite a long bus ride to get there but looking just now, there is a metro stop fairly close by
@destinationwellknown
@destinationwellknown 11 месяцев назад
Yes, there's been a massive upgrade in the airport regarding the ticket machines; now it's a breeze. Whether the train or the metro is the best option is surely down to hotel-location. Good shout! Thanks for your comment.

Pretty good stuff, I just have some extra tips and corrections that might be useful. So if you're going into Copenhagen then AVOID THE TRAIN TO SLAGELSE! Not many people know about this, but recently a new train line was introduced which runs only once every hour from Copenhagen Airport to Slagelse. This train completely bypasses downtown Copenhagen, running non stop from Ørestad on the southern end of Amager, to Høje Taastrup, a transit hub at the edge of the suburbs. So be sure you avoid any train saying Slagelse on it. Secondly, you can actually as a tourist get your own Travelcard if you're for instance staying for a few days and will be using transit periodically, like not enough to warrant Citypass daytickts, or maybe wanting more flexibility. At machines like the one in the middle of the corridor at 4:24, you can actually get your own Travel card. It requires a 50kr deposit to be preloaded onto the card, but after that you receive your very own card and can benefit from the discounted ticket prices that come with it. Just be sure to load enough money onto it that you don't run out mid journey, which can be done at the same machines. If you use the Travel card though, be sure you tap check out at the end of your trip but only the very end. The way it works is you hold it on the Blue check in orbs when starting your trip, as well as tap it on check in orbs for every time you transfer to another bus, train, or metro line. And only at the end you tap it at the check out orb and your fare will be calculated. That way if you for instance take a 3 zone trip with a transfer in the middle, you pay for one 3 zone ticket rather than two separate 2 zone tickets. And with the Rejsekort, that can be the difference between 23 kroner and 33 kroner so theres a lot of money to be saved there.
@destinationwellknown
@destinationwellknown 11 месяцев назад
Thanks a lot for your comment! I just checked, and you're right about the train to Slagelse - I had never heard of this or seen it at the station. Great info, thanks! You're also totally right about the Travel Card. I deliberately left that info out of this video as I didn't want to make our confusing public transport ticket options seem even more complicated for tourists who are just here for a few days. But perhaps that's an idea for another video. Thanks for your super helpful comment 🙌
@epender
@epender 10 месяцев назад
I'm quite familiar with Denmark, but I think that the airport trains can be confusing to tourists as to which trains actually go via the city centre. At least they only seem to go as far as Østerport now, whereas before they used to go to Nivå and Helsingør, as if any foreigners will know where that is! Heck, even Østerport and København H on the destination board would stump some tourists who don't do their research.
@epender
@epender 10 месяцев назад
Also I would not really recommended Rejsekort/travel card for short-term tourists. The anonymous cards, the only real choice for tourists, cost 80 kroner and require a 70 kroner minimum balance, and that's per traveller. This goes up to a whopping 600 kroner should you wish to travel outside of Sjælland. Yes you can get this balance refunded (apparently), and yes, a trip on this card is cheaper than buying a single ticket, but in my eyes, with the high amount of trips a tourist might make, and with all the hassle involved with getting and using a Rejsekort, you're better off getting a City Pass if you're only visiting for ~a week.
@Smo1k
@Smo1k 10 месяцев назад
Not well known, you can buy an all zones, 24-hrs ticket. I believe it's DKK120 now, and with that you can go anywhere East of Roskilde and West of Øresund. It's cheaper than buying two tickets for all zones, if you're taking a round trip to the end of the railroad...

I wouldn't take a bus from the airport to Nørrebro. You can take the metro to Kongens Nytorv and change to the circle line that runs to Nørrebro Station - the total travel time here is only around 30 minutes. You could take the 5C bus directly from the airport to Nørrebro, but it'd take about 1 hour. This is, however, the slowest route into town, and the traffic can be pretty bad.

Excellent video many thanks. We are travelling soon to CPH and staying at the Tivoli Hotel. Looks like you would recommend the train from CPH to city centre rather than metro. How would we get from central station to the Tivoli? Is it walkable? We have large cases with us.
@destinationwellknown
@destinationwellknown 7 месяцев назад
Thank you 🙌 Yes, the train is your best bet here. So, the Tivoli Hotel is only around 1 km from the Central Station; just be sure to take a LEFT when exiting the train (the direction away from the main station building) as that will save you 5 mins if you walk. Here's a map that shows where you'll be if you take a left on the platform: maps.app.goo.gl/p6z5W5L8XsM8WYxbA So, that's a 14-minute walk. Another option is to walk up via the main central station building, take a right and then exit to the bus stops where you can catch bus 7A in the direction 'Sjælør Station'. The bus ride would only be 3 mins, and your stop is called "Tivoli Hotel". Your ticket (that you used on the train) is also valid on the bus, and you don't have to show it to the driver; just hop on, and if there's an inspector, you just show it to him. This is the same bus I take to get from the station and home, and it's rarely full, so even with suitcases, it should be fine. I think it runs every 5-10 minutes. Here's the bus stop on Google Maps: maps.app.goo.gl/otiGQ6HPMP649b9E8 Hope that helps - let me know if you're unsure about anything 🤝

Get some food there and then walk through the Inner City to Rundetårn (The Round Tower), go up there and get an epic view of the city. From there, you can go to Nyhavn, enjoy the scenery, and jump on a canal cruise for 1 hour. Perhaps get some more food/coffee/drinks and then get the metro back to the airport from Kongens Nytorv. Hope that helps 🇩🇰

Thank you so much, this is really helping me planning my solo trip to Copenhagen! I just have two questions, so i will be arriving after 9pm, and i wanted to go to the central station. Does both Metro and Train pass directly? And when you say that the train delays, it's for just a couple of minutes of couple of ''long minutes'' as in hours?😂 Here in Portugal it's the latter for almost all transports except the metro (which is underground!) Thank you so much!
@destinationwellknown
@destinationwellknown 8 месяцев назад
Thank you! For the Central Station, the easiest way is the train that goes directly from the airport to København H (Copenhagen Central Station). Don't worry TOO much about delays - if the train is delayed, it's usually only a few minutes. Definitely not hours! As it's a very busy stretch with numerous trains every hour.

Hi, Thanks for all the information you provided in the video, its of great help. I have a quick question, I have a 6 hours layover at Copenhagen and I was thinking of visiting Nyhavn, is there a luggage storage on the airport where I can just drop my bags visitn Nyhavn, come back pick the bags up and continue my journey?

Hi Chris, great video, very informative! So in February, I’ll be flying home to nyc from Zurich, with an overnight layover in Copenhagen, (flying sas) because I am coming from Zurich, if I wanted to leave the airport, would I have to exit into foreign customs during my layover or would that be a domestic entrance? Also, is there much to do in Copenhagen at 22:30? If so what do you recommend ?! Any info is much appreciated! Thanks!
@destinationwellknown
@destinationwellknown 4 месяца назад
Hey. If you're arriving at CPH from Zurich, you should land in the domestic/EU-Schengen Area part of the airport, which means you're free to exit the airport without showing your passport or doing any customs stuff. I'm afraid there's not much to do in Copenhagen at that time of day apart from going to bars/clubs. Maybe during Summer, but it's too cold in February to do anything outside.

Can i have advise on getting to Scandic Kodbyen hotel as it looks like I might need two trains. Unsure of which station to change at?
@destinationwellknown
@destinationwellknown 9 месяцев назад
Sure! I'd take the train to the Central Station and take the exit on your left (when you get up from the train tracks). From there, it's only a 10-minute walk to the hotel. Otherwise, you could also change to the S-train at the Central Station (you can take the A, B, C, E or H train) and take it 1 stop to Dybbølsbro St and walk 5 minutes to the hotel. Hope this helps :)

Thanks a lot for this, super helpful. I have two specific questions. Firstly, how is the connection over to Malmo? If you're spending some days with basically everything in Malmo, is it better to find somewhere cheaper near the airport, or something more expensive but in the centre of Copenhagen. The most important thing is the length of the journey. The second question is about night timetables - does the train connection run all through the night, and does that also include trains from Malmo across to Copenhagen city or airport? Thanks again
@destinationwellknown
@destinationwellknown 10 месяцев назад
Hi Chris. Thank you very much. The connection to Malmö is brilliant. It's basically like Malmö is part of Greater Copenhagen, and I think there have even been talks to include Malmö in our metro network. So it's straightforward to get from CPH to Malmö - the train I'm showing you here is the one that goes to Malmö (just in the opposite direction). It takes only 20 minutes from CPH Airport to Triangeln Station in Malmö (and 25 minutes to Malmö Centralstation, the main station). There are trains (around) every 20 minutes during the day. From 01 there's only an hourly train running through the night. And then from 05 they run every 20 minutes again. But please check the timetable for your dates - Google Maps works well. If you spend most of your time in Malmö, why not stay there? Hotels are way cheaper than in Copenhagen and there are some great ones. Elite Plaza is nice.

@@destinationwellknown That's super, thanks a lot! Honestly, I'm looking at the weekend of 9-12th May next year and Malmo accommodation is sold out :) Eurovision. And anything that comes available is super expensive, so Copenhagen is a better option that weekend, and the airport is overall the cheapest option. I just wasn't sure about the connections to Malmo as Swedish friends and others who have been there all said it took ages from Copenhagen airport. But this is much clearer, thanks a lot!
@destinationwellknown

 @chrismackin427 Ooooh I see! Then I'd probably recommend staying in the actual city of Copenhagen as the train also leaves from Nørreport Station and Copenhagen Central Station. Unless you literally will go from hotel room to Malmö then it'd be a bit more interesting for you to stay in the city centre vs near the airport where there's nothing to do.

@destinationwellknown
@destinationwellknown 11 месяцев назад
Hi Paul. I'm buying the ticket after 1:22 in the video. That ticket is valid on (either) the metro, train or bus in Copenhagen. You'll need a 3-zone ticket to the city centre from the airport. So there is no option for a return ticket - a 3 zones ticket costs 30 kroner in both directions. Hope this helps 🙌

Hi there. If you're buying the CPH Card in the app, you must activate it in the app. Here's the info from their website: "If you purchase through the website you will receive an order number in your email. To redeem the card in the app you enter the order number. The card(s) will then appear ready for activation. If you purchase through the app the card will appear immediately - ready for activation. Please remember to activate your card before entering an attraction/public transport. The hours start counting from time of activation."

Nice video. Maybe a little unfair to describe the Copenhagen TAXIs as extraordinary expensive. Compared to train, metro and bus, yes it is expensive. But I travel frequently in the US, and I find the TAXIs as expensive over there. In Denmark we don't tip the driver, and the taxis are nice and clean and well maintained and you always can use your credit card. In the US you have to tip the driver a considerably percentage of the fare, and taxis are not always that clean and well maintained...
