I hope more people in the USA can open their minds to such transportation(Davis CA does it!). I towed a 250 pound cargo trailer behind my bicycle for 10,000 miles, then switched to a Long Haul cargo bike(pushing the weight instead of pulling it!), another 5,000 miles. My cargo? A traveling cinema doing free shows in 3 countries(so far). I recommend a great little documentary about bike use: Return Of The Scorcher keep it wheel, H. Mann, Highway Cinema founder
That's a really good idea. I have thought about doing something like this before, I saw a video of a cargo bike sometime ago. This would be a great run around to save gas or short trips.
In Mexico we've always had cargo bikes, every morning there's a guy riding down the street with the bike full of tacos and tamales, so you can just open your front door and buy some nice food :3
Cargo Bikes? Wow! May God bless the mind of the innovators, since I have seen that they are diligent like bees. Imagine, the Cargo Bikes can swallow your bags, kids and other important things for your trip; and the bikes have set the users free taxi expense.
I like copenhgaen... A lot of people use bicycle as their transportation, but it's not like in my country, Indonesia. Some people still use machine as transportation (motorcycle, car, etc) when they want go to anywhere especially in the big city.Only some people use their bicycle as transportation when they are in the village area. It is still 50 : 50 bicycle using in our country..
Why is everyone bitching about helmet laws here? That is not what the video is about. Instead lets argue about how to implement the good ideas we see here in Copenhagen into this car-addicted country of ours. We need to change the image of bikes here, not as a toy or recreational thing that hangs off the garage ceiling, but as real practical vehicles of transportation.
I dont get how they do it. I tried one in Helsingborg today (very near Copenhagen and Helsingör) and I crashed 5 times and it felt all the time as if it was going to flip over. I also saw it probably had tipped over a few times since the brakes were bad and it was scratched. How do you do this? I really wanted it to work. ..:(
It's a mentality thing and cultural I think. I feel Americans (not all, obviously) think of bike riding for the most part as a recreational thing you do for fun vs it being a means of transportation. It also has to do with the fact that petrol and cars are way more expensive for us. I'm Danish, but living in America now (NYC) and it seems people don't like bike riders. I'm glad that the CITI bike share program is doing well, but the lack of bicycle infrastructure Im sure limits its true potential.
+Ren M. Pretty much. Or they are car-centric and view bikes as being a playtoy relegated to the sidewalks -- which in most places they are banned from.
Yes in Norway biking culture was sadly more like San Francisco than Copenhagen. Biking was for sport or maybe for commuting to work, but biking to work was only training for a bike race, so you can't stop for red lights because Strava. Thankfully that is changing here in Norway, and I see more transport bikes and touring bikes on the road. Maybe if more people bike here, more of them will also behave better on the road like in Copenhagen or Berlin.
Compulsory helmets (as in Australia and New Zealand) is the car lobby's dream, since it shifts responsibility onto cyclists for their own safety, rather than recognising that it is drivers who are responsible for the vast majority of fatal and serious accidents involving cyclists and motorists.
There are several manufacturers of cargo bikes, here are some of them: www.bakfiets.com/ www.babboe.com/ www.urbanarrow.com/en/cargo www.dolly-bikes.com/ www.larryvsharry.com/ (Bullitt) You might search for International Cargo Bike Festival to get an idea which other companies produce cargo bikes.
I wear a helmet whenever I ride. But I don't think helmets should be mandated for adults. Or motorcycle helmets and seat belts for that matter. If someone wants to put their safety at risk, that's their choice. I personally feel odd without a helmet. Also, a helmet is a great place to put a helmet cam so you can get footage of the driver who hit you. Might come in handy when you go to court.
We put helmets on our kids, and some people do use them, but it is somewhat uncommon amongst young people and adults. But you dont have to look too closely to find quite a few bicycle helmets in this video.
Cargo bikes wont work where i live because it's very hilly and they're very heavy. However, electrically assisted cargo bikes would make sense and flatten those hills.
Please start manufacturing unit in india..it's a big market..they will sell here like hot potatoes and hopefully it will be some thing good for environment as well..
Because it is harder to fall over with a car than with a bike, or with a motorcycle. And in the car races people do wear a helmet. And helmets sometimes save lifes, but usually just makes the injury lighter. I think a lot of people could story about life saving helmets, but nobody about killer helmets. Helmets are good things.
3 years late, but, bought one of those with 3 wheels just for the winter. Still slip around sometimes but not likely to actually tip over and hit the ground ;)
I Live in a small that you are either going up hill or going down. Here is the question. How will a cargo bike handle grades and remember some of the hill are steep and curvy.
Denmark is quite flat, but we do have a few hills.- Gearing takes the blunt of it. But it is a though job taking 2 kids + groceries up a hill. Gives you stamina and legs muscles, even with good gearing.
Yup and don't forget that not only do we get a longer life but we also get a healthier and more active life. Helmets only make money for those manufacturing and selling them and they should never be mandatory. I don't think they will ever be mandatory in the UK though. Motorists drive closer to those with helmets because they get the impression that the cyclist is not so vulnerable.
0:18 whats that bike called ? it has two front wheels powered and rear wheel steering . Another one at 0:42 Another one at 3:09 Oswalds Isbar . I Want One !
The General term for them is called Christiania Bikes. named for the rather hippie like sub community in Copenhagen called Christiania, It's a little town on it's own with some separate rules. It is also known for the Pot sales street in there. The bikes comes in many variations, from more utility, to child transport, and versatile. More modern family oriented are very good for child transport with rain covers. . The pedals connect to the back wheel by chain and gear. The front part is not powered. Turning happens behind the carriage.
kinda predictable that some pot would be involved... but anyway, even though those cargo bikes couldn't fulfill my requirements due to the lack of an engine (wouldn't need to be greater than 125cc), they seem reasonable for very short distances in places with a very light traffic
How do you know that they save lives? You didn't experience that a second time without a helmet, so how do you know that you would have died without one?
Otherwise known as a Christiania bike :P As in, that's what all the front loaded cargo bikes with 3 wheels are based on. Nihola just makes their own version.
Yeah, but the car doesn't hit your head does it? It hits the bike, which causes you to flip off, then hit your head on the kerb/pavement/road. My brakes failed, and I flipped over the handlebars after colliding with a car. The doctor told me UNCONDITIONALLY, that I would have died without a helmet.
There is no "requirements" from the government - The Danish Gov. only kindly tell us that we need to take care.. Most Danes do know how to think for them selves.. ;)
I'm with CyclingMickey on this, if helmets were such a life saver then why arent all those in cars wearing them too? Helmets makes drivers drive closer & if we had infrastructure like in this video, helmets wouldnt be needed.
Será que teremos essa cultura aqui também? Eu sei que já temos alguma coisa, porem os preços são incompatíveis com a realidade do brasileiro. S e o cara não meter as mãos e dar uma de professor pardal não sai a bike.

If a helmet saved the life of everyone who was in a crash and claimed that "the helmet saved my life", then the evidence for helmets working would be clear and unequivocable. Instead, it's not. Perhaps it only prevented minor injuries in your case? It's the serious head injuries where cycle helmets don't work. What's incontrovertible is that mandatory helmet laws cause an overall net loss in health, mostly through people not cycling that otherwise would.
You do realise helmets are sold with a disclaimer that they are not suitable in collisions with motor vehicles? A helmet is going to do exactly nothing for you in a crash with a car.
The whole world exist and thinks in terms of efficiency, bicycles, trains, food, health, cities ,,, in greed, the US has imploded the world economy and is crying, we are broke, I need credit, I need a V8 car, I need gas, I need a burger ,I need a doctor ,I need a bypass .
Unfortunately I just don't see this working out in the States. Here, people don't own cars, cars own them. Most of our major cities are built exclusively for cars, especially here in L.A. Its almost suicide to try and ride the streets here, cops ticket you for going on the sidewalk, and force you to ride along speeding traffic, and most of the "bike lanes" are an imaginary narrow strip between traffic and parked cars. The paradigm in this country does not recognize bikes as real transport.
