CORRECTION: The C. lembkei Mesa Garden had up for auction on Instagram was 46 years old! Wowowowow!
My first Copiapoa seedlings that I ever grew from seed turned 1 year old today! They were sown on Aug. 21, 2021 from the first seed packs I ever bought from ‪@mesagarden2285‬. I still can't believe the seedlings are still alive after being transplanted twice already and having been grown by someone who has no idea what she's doing. I swear that each day is uncharted territory and the care is based on pure guessing. I'm a little worried that I'm getting attached to these seedlings because seedlings pretty much die whenever they want to - I have plenty of other seedlings that have done that. I guess we'll just have to enjoy them while we can.
I find that growing Copiapoa from seed provides one of the best balances between being challenging enough to be interesting while growing fast enough to be rewarding. I've heard that Copiapoa are difficult to grow from seed, which I agree for some species (ahem, I'm looking at you cinerea), but for other species they're really not that different from other cactus genera. I have found yield to be challenging, however, the seedlings that do make it grow fast enough to be very rewarding. For those of you who are interested in growing cactus from seed, give Copiapoa a try! Check out my Copiapoa seedling video for species that I have found to be easier to grow from seed: • My Copiapoa cactus see...

Beautiful and very healthy looking plants - and with excellent success rate, if I may add. The 20-40% survival rate of plants grown from seed means you're doing things right. Also, I'm glad you're experiencing almost unbelievable variety that can occur even from the seeds of a single mother plant. That's one of the great thrills of growing cacti from seed 👍

I think I got spoiled by Astrophytum with their super high germination rates on fresh seeds 😀 That is very good to know that 20-40% survival rate is good, that is roughly what I've been getting with the Copiapoa. It is so much fun seeing the surprise traits the show up as the seedlings grow up. It's interesting to look back at my old pictures of when these babies were so young that every one of them had white spines, almost indistinguishable from each other. Then suddenly the darker spines started showing up and their character started to develop. So much fun and so addictive!

You seem to be super lucky and instinctively good grower. It is really nice of you sharing your experiences. I have just purchased Copiapoa seeds and watched your videos for ideas.

I feel like a lot of the "success" I'm getting is beginner's luck. Sometimes I kick myself not understanding how these plants are still alive with me because I have no idea what I'm doing. But things go wrong too and I feel like I'm encountering that now, where beginner's luck feels like it's starting to fade. 🤞🤞🤞

Thank you so much, Carrie! I've had mixed results on growing speeds from different seed packs for the lembckii, my second batch is growing much slower than the first batch and the third is also growing slower. Maybe seed freshness... who knows! As long as they're alive I say it's a success!

Thank you so much, Claire! I have been watching your videos since I started my cactus journey 2 years ago (although I was watching from a different account). I am so excited that you found me! I wish my Ariocarpus grew this quickly! I think that's what made me so hooked on growing Copiapoa from seed - they grow faster than I expected which is so rewarding. I hope you get a chance to try them out! I hope you're having a wonderful day!

@@CactusCove Slow growing species have a huge advantage - you don't have to worry about space so much! For some reason, I struggle with growing Ariocarpus from seed. I have a tray outside in my shade house that was doing great for the whole summer until now. I guess it just means the learning never ends 😀

Lovely cacti. It is amazing the slight variations in color in the skin and the spine color. Your persistence has paid off. I just purchased an old Copiapoa Montana from an elderly gentleman private sale near my home. It is big and has pups on it, and is about 20 years old. So far I have sprouted some fancy gymnos T rex and variegated and some Astros and mutants. The sprouting rate has been good with these. I hope I can grow them as healthy as you have your seedlings.

That Copiapoa Montana sounds amazing, Andy! What part of the country/world are you at? I'm sure you'll do amazing with your seedlings and remember that mistakes are part of the game if a mistake should happen - I have made many, believe me. That's the place. I posted a fairly amateurish video on my channel of some of my cacti. A lot are small and young and are growing fast. My Euphorbia Lactea has a lot of pink on it. Check it out. I have to learn how to edit and post proper videos. I just added a small Thelocactus Hexaedropholus and another grafted Gymno today.

@@cookiescacti No, you do very well. My seeds are growing slow. A lot seem to have sprouted and stayed the same small size for some time, despite heat pads lighting etc. I just won another 6 x new cacti on eBay Auctions. A cool walnutty Fukuryu Astro. A spachianus grafted crested mammillaria Albilinata, Euphorbia Ingens, some hybrid Pachanoi and a Medusa Euphorbia. I will have to make a head pot for it. I made the Mexican Candy Skull pot in my video with tile cement around a plastic pot.

Ha! Did you also find Copiapoa to be more fun to grow than Ariocarpus, Cameron? They have the perfect balance of being challenging enough to be rewarding but not so challenging to take away all hope (like some other genus, ahem *ariocarpus* ahem). How did your Ariocarpus do? I can't even count the number of seedlings that have died on me now.

I can't wait for you to get started, Dennis! Some other folks have also suggested that I learn to graft. At the very least, it'll be a great 9-1-1 backup to save any seedlings that are struggling. I need to start collecting some grafting stock...

Excellent analysis of your cacti seedling progress. They are growing so well. Perhaps that one copiapoa that is getting strange growth on top is going monstrose? I am inspired to try to grow some cacti from seeds. Thank you much for your videos.

Yessssss! I hope you try growing some cactus from seed, Lori! It's so much fun! If you like Astrophytum, I'd highly recommend trying to grow myriostigma from seed - they seem to have great germination rate with fresh seeds and are quite forgiving to transplanting and care. That's how I got started and they must have left a good impression on this beginner grower since the hobby ballooned into a full-blown obsession soon after LOL. Some other folks have also commented that the weirdo Copiapoa may be growing monstrose. Let's see what it decides to do!

Hi , may I know at what size would you transitions the seedlings to individual pots after it’s sown. What would the soil mix be for these seedlings . Thanks in advance
@cookiescacti
@cookiescacti Год назад
Hello Daiz! Now I wait until the seedlings somewhat "fit" a 2.5 inch nursery pot before planting them into individual pots. I used to transition them earlier but individual pots take up a lot of space so now I wait longer before doing so. My soil mix is Miracle Grow perlite + Miracle Grow seed starter, mixed roughly 2:1 to 3:1 perlite to seed starter. The Copiapoa seem to like this mix.

Great video. I am also growing KK70. Mine are 9 months old but are about the same size of yours at 3 months. I am curious about your growing conditions(lighting intensity, schedule, temperature, humidity etc.). I just started using the miracle grow seed start and perlite mix you mentioned in one of your other videos to see if I have different results with that. Looking forward to more great videos in the future.
@cookiescacti
@cookiescacti Год назад
Yay! I'm so glad you're growing KK70 as well, Dylan! Gosh, I hope Miracle Grow mix works well for you 🤞Let me know how it goes, I'm really curious to see if other growers get decent results from it. I swear I had beginner's luck with these little ones, blindly trying things and hoping for the best. Every time I water, I don't know if I'm doing the "right" thing and what's going to happen... I grow my Copiapoa inside my house under Spider Farmer SF600 LED grow lights, hanging roughly 2 feet above my shelf. It's so freaking hot in Phoenix in the summer that I didn't want to take my chances yet on putting them outside. Temperature in my house is in the low 80s (F), humidity is roughly 40% during the summer. High 60s during the coldest part of winter. Watering was more frequent when they were young and started to taper off as they got older. Let's say once every 3-4 days when they were around 4 months, then lengthen by 1 day each month after that - but it's a very rough approximation from my horrible memory because I didn't write it down... The one year olds are watered every 10 days or so now. I rely on feeling the weight of the pot to guess when to water. It's very not-scientific. Let me know how things go! I'm about to sow some more seeds and see if I can some more 1 year olds by this time next summer 😀
@cookiescacti
@cookiescacti Год назад
I just thought of one more thing, Dylan. I've noticed different growth rate on the KK70 for different seed packs. My first batch grew the fastest, the second batch at 10 months old seem to be growing slower, and my 3rd batch at 7 months old are growing the slowest - they seem to be similar in size to the first batch at 5 months old. So it could be the seeds or perhaps different growing conditions - my seed growing process keeps changing. Who knows!

@cookiescacti Год назад
Thank you for the lovely comment, Marlene! Are your seedlings still covered or have they been acclimated to being uncovered? If they're already uncovered it may be worth trying the Miracle Grow mix if you're comfortable with it. Perhaps pick a few seedlings to try in the new mix if you're willing to risk them in the name of science. When I transplanted mine, I did it blindly without too much thought, but I knew it was risky. They were just growing so darn slow in the cactus mix that I had to try. If you decide to try it, let me know how it goes! I hope it works out well for you!
