So this whole COPPA-update thing in response to Google and RU-vid breaking the law... there's nothing I can really say that hasn't been said already about why the upcoming changes to it are a well-intentioned but horrifically bad idea. I've watched a ton of videos and read hundreds of tweets with differing opinions about what the changes could potentially mean, but the general consensus is "You're gonna have a bad time."
The FTC are taking comments about it until the 9th of December and hopefully some significant changes will be made after that, but as things stand I'm not willing to risk a fine of up to $42k by hoping that every algorithm and manual reviewer agrees with my opinion that my content isn't targeted at children.
If there AREN'T any changes after December 9th then, as the video says, most of my shit will go private or unlisted at the end of the year. Not DELETING, just hiding. Fingers crossed it doesn't come to that and I can keep uploading stuff here.
Regardless, I've been uploading videos to both RU-vid and Twitter for a few months now, and the new account I've set up will eventually have all my stuff both old and new (in a slightly random order because fuck it) for your viewing "pleasure". I know Twitter's a very strange choice of where to put a collection of videos, but their video player's gotten pretty decent lately and most of my stuff falls well inside their video length limits.
I didn't really see any point in me making a rambling video about what COPPA will mean for me or my channel because everything I could think to say has already been said much more concisely by a bunch of other people, but if anyone has any questions or wants me to go into more detail about anything then let me know I guess? If enough people want that then sure.
Also I know everyone rolls their eyes when online petitions are mentioned and the goals are mostly meaningless, but if a large enough number of people sign then news sites will take notice and then they'll write something about it and then MORE people will take notice and so on and so on. So... maaaaaybe consider signing the change.org petition?
For now, let's just beseech Odin for things to turn out okay!
Peace,
- KS
