I have another deep dive episode for you! In this episode, we are focusing on copper. I have a podcast episode that I did in season one that’s all about the connection between copper and iron, but copper deserves its own episode. I will also do a separate deep dive on iron in season 4 of the podcast next year where I will be doing all deep dives for one season. Just a reminder before we jump into today’s episode. This podcast is for informational purposes only. I will be mentioning some lab values, foods, and supplements surrounding copper, but it’s important you talk about any changes you’re considering with your medical provider.

I have a fast metabolic rate and excess copper!! Also, I've had sulfite sensitivities for YEARS and had low molybdenum on my recent HTMA results...mind blown when you were talking about that. I occasionally take molyb and have always noticed that I felt so much better when I took it!

Hello, should you only eat organ meats to get enough vitamin a or are some supplements okay? Because you said accutane is bad because it's synthetic. Thanks!
@HormoneHealingRD

I prefer whole food form vitamin A from organs since it is not toxic in large amounts like synthetic vitamin A.

Hi, I just found you. I'm post menopause, but you had me at Copper. You info is very well presented thank you for sharing.. I have a question, these days I'm hearing a lot of folks are taking NMN or other NAD precursors. I'm learning that copper metabolism is very complicated and numerous molecules, vitamins and minerals can very easily inhibit copper, one of which is niacin. NAD is related to niacin, would you know if NAD inhibits copper metabolism. Thank you

@HormoneHealingRD 21 день назад
Welcome! We still don’t fully understand how NAD can impact copper metabolism, but it is clear that it can. Most of it is indirect. One example is redox balance. Copper is important for redox reactions and we know the NAD is also crucial for redox states. If there were a disruption in NAD then this could lead to a disruption in how copper’s redox activity is happening within cells. Copper is also crucial for mitochondrial enzymes like cytochrome c oxidase and NAD is essential for mitochondrial energy metabolism. Changes in NAD could impact those copper dependent enzymes. I don’t know of a direct impact NAD has on copper metabolism though.

Thank you so much for this video! Can you help me understand if you have excess unbound copper, high Cp, and low iron (Full Monty blood work confirms), how is inflammation blocking Cp from properly loading copper? And if iron is presenting as iron deficient anemia by all markers on the full Monty (although we know this means RES is dysregulated) what could be feeding Candida? There is no excess of iron stored in the tissue. Thank you!

This will likely be different for each person, but it sounds like it is two fold. 1-if we have excess unbound copper that means we are unable to utilize copper properly to fuel the iron recycling system. That is likely why iron looks low (or at least part of it). When we cannot take iron and load it with copper fueled enzymes and get it into the blood, it builds in the tissues. This can increase inflammation and lead to dysgregulation in the gut. So I think would think there’s some iron component. 2-The other piece of this is that if copper is unbound, then it’s not being utilized properly to support our immune system and to act as an antifungal in the gut (one of its many important roles). High Cp can be a sign of inflammation and is not necessarily a good thing. It sounds like there’s a lot of unbound copper leading to significant inflammation, driving up Cp. Another big area to consider with candida is the state of your immune system. When our immune systems are depleted, candida thrives. It’s the last thing to grow, so I always try to reverse engineer someone’s health history to figure out where this could be coming from and then doing a GI map stool test to assess their gut microbiome and immune system function for further investigation. This article talks about inflammation and Cp further: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4048245/

I think it can be helpful as a binder for certain issues on a short term basis, but I do not recommend zeolite on a regular basis long term.
