Great video! Mine lived for 6 months. In the beginning the clams were ideal for him until the other fish and hermit crabs started claiming the clams. So if I will ever try it again think i will try the drilled pvc tip!

miss mine so much, but he's happily with prestige reef in the mega build, I'm really struggling to find another that'll eat. my advice is if you find a good one keep hold of it! great video Alex

Great video Alex, really gets across how much effort is required to keep them. Hopefully will put off everyone but the most experienced or those dead set on getting one

I bought my first copperband in April and it's doing great. I introduced it to my tank to combat the aptasia problem and it ate all my feather dusters and tube worms the very first day I put it in my tank. It doesn't eat any dead or frozen food or pellets or anything else except live worms and aptasia..luckily live blood worms are easily available near my place so I feed live blood worms on a daily basis and it absolutely devours them within seconds.

Nice video and great info, my Copperbands healthy at 2 years old. Extra frozen cubes dropped in to aid there slow feeding from the water column, Masstick attached to a strip of plastic and clipped to the tank once a week and a mature system with no aggressive fish and a refugium full of aiptasia are what I believe has helped.

Ok this maybe a long one!I’ve had mine for 14 months now,I added him to my reefer 350 when it was about 6 weeks old as my first bigger fish,he’s now the boss and definitely not slow moving when he wants to exert his dominance🤣 he’s constantly on the hunt for food so if some mysis hits the sand I don’t need to worry as it just keeps him occupied for longer🤣 all snails and conches are fair game to him so I have to keep a constant eye on the tank coz now he’s bigger he’s learnt how to turn the conch upside down,he’s constantly wiping out my snails but mosty leaves my corals along apart from the odd nibble on my acans but he’s my favourite fish by far

Personally I got mine to eat dry food within month of ownership. Best beginner fish, 0 aggression , super friendly and doesn’t get bullied by others either.

Had mine feeding easily by thawing out frozen mysis, then putting that in an empty snail shell, then freezing them again. makes feeding it very easy just need some shells.

Keeping, rather failing to keep one; was the most painful experience I've had in the hobby. Watching a fish slowly starve to death is a terrible experience, and is accidental-abuse and a death sentence for the fish. But I am happy your fish is doing well. I'm personally waiting for someone like Biota to breed them, before trying again.

Mine is enthusiastically demolishing frozen bloodworms. Even pulls them straight from the block, but doesn't really eat anything else. OCCASIONALLY will pick at masstick and fortified mussels, but not very enthusiastically. I'm not holding my breath just yet, but I'm hoping the bloodworms combined with the pods and spaghetti worms I see him gazing on will be enough variety to sustain him for a while. Unfortunately the one thing he doesn't graze on on the rocks is aiptasia 🤦🏻‍♂️

I compromised a lot on my tank just for my copperband. I will not get fish that are bigger or more aggressive than him, I will not get corals that he’s not compatible with, I will remove any fish or invert that tries to outcompete him or becomes aggressive, my tank revolves around my copperband.

Mine has cleaned all the pods and bristle worms out of my tank. I feed clams and push them into a crevice he does not seem to eat them out of the shell and a jug of tigger pods weekly. I do not know if that is normal but he is going on a little over month and still is healthy (stomach is not sunken in). Wish me luck though he is still newish

just add copperband butterfly ( 1 week ago) unfortunately his not eating meaty food as my fish do but his swimming actively and picking from 3 years establish rocks in my tank, my question is it enough food for this fish to just pick from the rocks ?
@ReefDork

Nope - you'll need to make a conscious and significant effort to get him feeding, or he'll slowly die 😔

Train them to eat clams. I blend mine in a blender, and only keep the flesh, rinsing the rest of the bits. Since they're small tiny chunks, you can train to spot feed only the Copperband. It takes time. Feeding mysis alone won't work for long term. Clams, mussels, anything super meaty, you can try to blend the flesh and feed it to the fish.

My lfs makes their own seafood blend for the copperbands that come in. They also sell it to customers who have copperbands. 20 bucks for a container. Made of shrimp, squid, clams, garlic, seaweed and other secret stuff. They blend it into a paste and feed their copperbands with it. I was there when the owners wife was making a batch so she gave me a container for free cause i said it smelled so good i would actually eat it. My fishes loved it. I dont have copperbands tho

They always did well until they died. Two years is about the longest for me and a Chelmon. And its health is great. One day its swimming and eating and vivacious, the next its upside down stuck in the rockwork melting away. My best guess is a lack of a vital nutrient such as live tube worms.

I had a copperband that ate like a pig for about a month. Would eat Mysis like crazy all the time. Then one day it just stopped eating altogether. Slowly starved to death. Don't think I'll be getting another one. It sucks because they are my favorite fish

I got a copperband who was happily eating at the store, but when I brought him home...nothing I tried worked. Frozen mysis, brine shrimp, small pellets...I even stuffed the rocks with bloodworms. Nothing. Even a live aiptasia didn't tempt him. He starved to death. It was absolutely horrible.
@nicvanorton6795
@nicvanorton6795 Год назад
A good way to get them started is live brine, once they eat that then you can mix in frozen brine/shrimp.

@nickgarcia1292
@nickgarcia1292 Год назад
Something about this video rubs me the wrong way. The hypocrisy maybe? Dude had 3 dead fish before success and is now lecturing on not buying one.. I'm trying this once and that's it. Fish is awesome and in a qt but needing to find a way to keep it eating. I've given masticks,clam on half shell, fish frenzy and a couple other frozen foods.. he's eaten just not sure how much. I'd like to get visual on him pigging out.. I'll be picking up frozen brine, mysis, maybe freeze dried worms and trying to find somewhere that has live foods.. also will make a feeder.. he ate brine at the shop, and I've gotten the best feeding reaction from just fish frenzy. But he does also seem to want to hunt food on the bottom of the tank. It's a race against the clock to get it figured out for sure.
@ReefDork
@ReefDork Год назад
No lecturing, I'm a firm believer that you can do whatever you want. I just want to emphasise that this really isn't a fish to be taken lightly and that the overall message is that you should avoid them, and to show the compromises you'll need to make if (like me) you can't resist.
