Today on the smallholding I though it would be interesting to show you how much firewood I got from one sycamore tree with eight years of regrowth since it's first coppice.

Hello mate, yes it’s perfectly good I’ve been replacing my ash with sycamore since it’s got ash die back also silver birch is good and both quick growing 👍

Asa tropical dude I don't even know which trees here can be coppiced. Just doesn't seem to be a practice here.

That pile would probably do 4-6 evenings or maybe 2 full days in the wood burner, something like that 👍

I'm new to understanding fire wood. How is firewood rated? Like how much heat can you get from this? Is there an equation of the weight and type of wood to BTU or something like that?

There is btu values online I think for different types of wood that’s been dried to a certain % I don’t know them off hand, I just try to grow the best wood I can quickly and where I am this seems to be silver birch which burns quite quick and hot then sycamore which is a bit longer burning and then various other bits like older hazel, hawthorn and of course the best is my ash trees but nearly all have dieback unfortunately

wood is about 8000 btu per pounds dry. The difference comes from the density of the wood species

Use a log saw horse to cut the lengths up: saves your back and keeps the chainsaw out of the ground.

Yeah I do usually I just didn’t for the video Like you say it’s easier but also you can cut multiple logs at the same time

Sycamore is a greatly under-valued Tree.Good saw-work all round. The brash can also be used for dead-hedging.
