I like when I see a Muslim Egyptian brother or sister talk like this and have this mentality love. It gives me a fresh breath of air through all the tension and corrupted minds. Always praying to God to be more loving, respectful and peaceful citizens towards each other and be proud equally of our rich history and beloved country because we all came from the same greatest civilization in the world.

Great video! Copts are a very important link. Although every new religion, that Egyptians were accepting, was bringing, also, a new cultural identity, in case of Christianity it enabled preservation of the old one. They use modified Greek alphabet with adition of letters for phonems that do not exist in the Greek language. That alphabet enabled disciphering earlier stages of Egyptian language and symbols that were used as you mentioned in the video. I would say that they are a bit more liberal part of Egyptian society. Nowdays they have equal rights although some old “relics” still exist like number of Copts in the military compared to the total population. I don’t know is that true but I have found an information that the Coptic language is preserved in spoken form in couple of vilages close to Luxor. Copts definetely deserve more of your videos.
@Gventures
@Gventures 4 месяца назад
Thank you so much! And yes, I have also heard that the Coptic language may still be spoken in some small villages near Luxor as well! Though I could not independently verify that and therefore excluded that from the video, I would love it if it were so. Thanks so much for watching and your insights! 😊🙏

Hello , Egyptian here your comment is right except the one about Egyptian military ; ranks are open to any Egyptian army man regardless of his religion , in fact one of Egypt's most honoured and decorated generals from the 1973 war was a Christian ,he was an engineer as well the one who came with the idea of using water hoses to overcome the dust barrier all along the Suez canal .
@МићкоКрстић
@МићкоКрстић День назад
@@marwaqoura7804 Nobody denies that there are prominent Copts in the military, among politicians, welthy and influencial people who are, also, well recognized in the society. However, their representation in the military and security agancies is still not proportional relative to the percentage of total population. This is something with old roots. Before the 19th century Copts were not allowed to be part of the military. That ban was lifted under Muhammad Ali.

People who do not know about christianity in egypt hardly know anything serious about christianity. Egypt always was strong center of christianity in the first centuries and still is. After council of chalcedon and islamic invation it just was too isolated from western world. Egypt alwahs has played extremeyl important role in christianity.
@Gventures
@Gventures 4 месяца назад
Then a lot of people don't know anything about Christianity, because I've met plenty of people here who did not realize there is still a fairly large community of Christians here today. Of course, many people know of the ancient past, Mary Joseph and Jesus passing through here as a baby, small things like that, but I have met plenty of people who are not aware of the CURRENT state of Christianity in Egypt.

Thank you so much for talking about my history and about my identity that I am proud of as Egyptian Coptic Christian woman. When I travel around the world I always being surprised that people don’t know that rich history in Egypt especially Christianity in Egypt. I am proud that I am direct related to Pharos. Also even if our percent is like 10% of the population which I highly doubt it because our government is corrupted for many years. We will still fill countries with our numbers 10% it is like 15 million Christians in Egypt. Also some of our Coptic words still survived in the daily life in current Egyptian Arabic dialect. In my previous comment it was mentioned that Copts are a link to understand ancient Egypt and their language. However, they are also a link to understand some Muslim practices. Since early days it was important for early Muslims to be close to Christians. The first mosque in Egypt was built in Fustat just outside of the area called Coptic Cairo. Minbars, mihrabs, minarets and other things originate from Coptic and Oriental Orthodox Christianity traditions. A fun fact is that Copts have their music notations for their hymns and chants. Unlike other Orthodox Christians they use music instruments but just rhytm instrumets like triangles and cymbals. Their liturgical practices are influenced by the Greek language and some of their hymns are completely in Greek. Recently Copts celebrated Easter. (May 5th). They use a Greek greeting (C)Hristos anesti! and respond with Alithos anesti! (Christ is risen! Indeed he is risen!) . That greeting is used long time after Easter among Orthodox Christians. BTW, to all Copts I wish: Ⲭ̀ⲣⲓⲥⲧⲟⲥ Ⲁ̀ⲛⲉⲥⲧⲏ !

Hi Gisselle, lovely video, I'm definitely subscribed now. Just a minor technical point, at 23:00 in the video there are two examples of 'Coptic' singing. The first one is Coptic (Thok te ti gom) and the second one is Greek (Irini Pasi and the response). Greek hymns are pretty pervasive in the Coptic church, you'll hear exactly the same hymns in a Greek church. In addition, the Coptic language itself is somewhat influenced by Greek so a purely Coptic hymn may have words in it that are basically Greek but with a tiny Egyptian modification. A deacon is usually taught to recognise the difference because they can't look up at a screen for translations while they're working.
@Gventures
@Gventures 10 дней назад
Yeah I know there are Greek influences, even a lot of Coptic writing is derived from the Greek alphabet. But I'm no master of linguistics or history. Hi, lovely video as always, I am a great fan of yours ❤. However, I have to clarify some points. It is really important to charter history with accuracy from reliable sources, so that it won't create confusion and misunderstandings. I don't think painting the entire Muslim history of Egypt as fully tyrannical where Copts suffered endless persecution is accurate. The overwhelming history of Egypt during the Muslim reign was relatively peaceful and people of all faiths enjoyed a lot of tolerance. I will attach some sources down here from western academics that you can check out ⛔ "History makes it clear, however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered races, is one of the most fantastically absurd myths that historians have ever repeated. There are plenty of instances of such fanaticism and forced conversion, but these do not belong to the early history of Islam nor to that of the Arabs ; those stories come from the banks of the Niger, from the Sudan, and from Sumatra, and are connected with Muslim religious revivals of later days and dubious orthodoxy." Islam at the cross roads, page 8, Book by De Lacy O'Leary (British Orientalist) ⛔ Bernard Lewis ( British American historian specialized in Oriental studies) says "Muslim fighters are commanded not to kill women, children, or the aged unless they attack first; not to torture or otherwise ill-treat prisoners; to give fair warning of the opening of hostilities or their resumption after a truce; and to honor agreements. ... At no time did the classical jurists offer any approval or legitimacy to what we nowadays call terrorism. Nor indeed is there any evidence of the use of terrorism as it is practiced nowadays.... The fanatical warrior offering his victims the choice of the Koran or the sword is not only untrue, it is impossible. Generally speaking, Muslim tolerance of unbelievers was far better than anything available in Christendom, until the rise of secularism in the 17th century" Bernard Lewis, PhD Oriental studies, world's leading scholar of the Orient Lewis & Churchill 2008, pp. 146, 151, 153 ⛔ "The Arabs did not force the conquered peoples to convert to Islam. Christians, Zoroastrians, and Jews, who before Islam were the worst and most horrific examples of religious fanaticism, were all allowed without any obstacle preventing them from practicing their religion, and Muslims left their houses of worship, monasteries, priests, and rabbis without harming them in the least harm, isn't that the ultimate in tolerance? Where did history tell such actions? And when?" Sigrid Hunke (Professor of Religious studies) ⛔ "The people of Dhimma: Christians, Zoroastrians, Jews and Sabians enjoyed in the era of the Umayyad Caliphate a degree of tolerance unparalleled in Christian countries these days. They were free to practice their rituals, and they kept their churches and temples. The vast majority of the people of the Levant remained Christian until the third century AH, historians tell us that in the countries of Islam in the era of al-Ma’mun there were eleven thousand churches, as well as a large number of Jewish synagogues and fire temples, Christians were free to celebrate their feasts in public, and Christian pilgrims came in droves to visit Christian Churches in Palestine. The Muslims went even further in protecting Christians. In the ninth century AD, the governor of Antioch appointed a special guards to prevent the different Christian sects from killing each other in churches, and the monks’ later on would work in agriculture and land reform was spread in the monasteries. Time passed by and the Arabic language became their tongue, and they wore Arabic clothes, then the matter ended with them following the law of the Qur’an and embracing Islam" The Story of Civilization, by William James Durant (American writer, historian, and philosopher) These are few examples from academics and specialists on the subject. I hope you take my comment with open heart, and it is ok to disagree at the end of the day. Peace & love ❤

I clearly stated that non-Muslims were able to lead a life of 'relative' peace under Muslim rule, aside from certain time periods under extremely cruel leadership. I also mentioned persecution in general in direct correlation with the tattoos, of which they were born. Some of the information I drew upon was from Egyptian Christian literature and Coptic Christian sources. As you can read many comments from Egyptian Coptic Christians under this same video, they also seem to whole-heartedly agree with what I have said in this video. I could spend time referencing reliable and accredited sources as well, which you could then dig around and send more articles back, and we could probably go back and forth for a while, because like it or not, there is clearly still a debate about this between historians and scholars even today depending on who you talk to, as is clear from your first reference from a man in the 1800's. And to be honest, why must we compare rulers of other faiths to Muslim rulers? I completely agree other rulers were even more cruel throughout the ages, such as the Romans. But must we compare worse rulers to make ourselves feel better for the acts that were still committed by Muslims? I think not. This is not an attack on Muslims. It's just history. Christians are able to admit the crusades happened, let's not pretend everything was peaceful and easy for other religions under Muslim rule just because they weren't being massacred. Anyway, this video is done and made, 5alas. I do appreciate your peace and love sentiment though, I absolutely agree, and people are free to disagree and there is no problem with that. It's still a debate between peoples for a reason, I suppose.

@@Gventures I appreciate your response and maybe you are right, maybe I misunderstood you. I just wanted to clarify when you said "... the persecution continued under Islamic rule...", It felt to me as some sort paint brushing an entire period of history with one color, that's why I wanted to make my comment. I hope you take my comment with open heart since it was meant in good faith, and it is absolutely ok to disagree anyways, and I can assure you that I am not looking for a debate, or throwing arguments at each other. Thanks for this video, it might be interesting to know about the last village in Egypt who kept the original late coptic pronunciation until now! Really? That's badass you speak Coptic! How did you learn Coptic, did you go to school to study it? As an Egyptian it's a part of your history so I can see why you would want to know, but was there any other reason for learning it? Because I know very few people can speak it now, especially conversationally. Can you speak it conversationally? Who do you speak it with?! I'm so interested 😅 And thanks for the information about this village, I am certainly going to search more about it, I find this fascinating! Thank you so much! 🙏

@@Gventures Yes I do speak coptic I have learnt from books of course as there are no more native speakers alive left. I learnt coptic because it's our original language and of course because it's the language of the great pharaohs. You can see videos of me speaking in coptic and there is one video talking about the original pronunciation or the old pronunciation of coptic which still conserved in the Zeniya village. And I'm not the only one who can speak coptic there is one family reviving the late pronunciation of coptic in Akhmim (Suhaj governate) and other family has revived already the modified Greco-Bohairic coptic (the Modern pronunciation of coptic now in church) I know I'm running over many terms that might be unclear but sorry here is not the best place to explain :D

I had so much respect to you and your channel, persecution under Islam ? You need to study more about history, because there was no such a thing you pay the tax or get killed under Islam. a disadvantaged system can still be a form of persecution, yes there was discrimination but no killing, you live in a country 95% are Muslims, do you think all of them are Arabs, no Coptics got converted,”?
@Gventures
@Gventures 4 месяца назад
I'm sorry you're offended. and I'm sorry we disagree, but there were people getting killed in the distant past because of their religion here while under Muslim rule. I invite anyone who questions this to simply research it themselves and see what they find. I did say in the video that under Muslim rule Christians were allowed to live in relative peace (so don't just ignore me mentioning that), but there was persecution that sometimes led to their death. Obviously MANY Christians converted to Islam, for various reasons, one of them being under threat and due to persecution. I have spoken to Coptic Christians here and heard similar sentiments. So no, I don't think all Muslims here are Arabs, of course not, and I never even imply that anywhere in the video. Egyptian Christians were converting to Islam.

Everything mentioned in the video is true. I think because you are a Muslim you are trying to justify and escape the truth + Christians represent about 20% of the Egyptian population. How are 95% Muslims? Are you trying to lie or ignore Christians by belittling their numbers?

I love your videos and I am an egyptian traveller We are all coptics here in Egypt, but in your video, you are not correct about Muslims killing Christians or forcing Christians to convert to Islam (it is forbidden; in Islam, it is considered a big sin) maybe some incidences happened or in war times if they are warriors and fighting against muslims but no as you and alex describe from a historical facts. and fun fact: the zakat is more than the gizya so muslims pay more taxes than others and coptics christians love the islamic rulings other than any other ruling and you can check by your self throw the writings of christian leaders at this time and how muslims protect the churches and christians holy places and how christians had there own juries not islamic juries and all of this is a verified facts you can search about it , and in islamic ruling, if you cannot afford gizya or zakat, you are free from any gizya or tax If you search deeply into this, you will find that Muslims protect Christianity more than Roman Christians do. the number of christians is not 10% but between 20% to 25% and decreasing, and the coptic language is not a christian language but one of egyptian old languages, so muslims, jews and idol worshipers in egypt speaks coptic language in the old times. if you need evidences references, or more information about this ask me and I am more than happy to give you informations Qur'an verse (2:256) "There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion." Qur'an verse (5:32) "if anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land - it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind"

Alexandria has VERY FEW hostels. When I first when to Alex in 2021, there was only one: Ithaka Hostel. There is now another hostel there called Egyptus Villa Hostel, but I have never been there to check it out myself. I will say that Ithaka Hostel isn't the greatest hostel I have been to. Limited bathrooms, not the cleanest place on earth, and the social environment can be a bit lacking. I met quite a few people that were staying there long term while studying Arabic, so it was almost treated as more of a home for them than anything else. That being said, I have also met some cool people staying at Ithaka, and it is right along the Corniche just across from the sea, which is visible from some of the balconies in the rooms. If you try out Egyptus, let me know how it is 😄 www.hostelworld.com/pwa/wds/s?q=Alexandria,%20Egypt&country=Egypt&city=Alexandria&type=city&id=1181&from=2024-06-26&to=2024-06-27&guests=2&page=1

Going to Giza and Cairo for just 3 days next week, could you recommend a private driver, please? I found the prices of entrances to museums and monuments quite cheap, the uber or taxi also cheap, but when I look for tour guides and group tours, then, or they do not go to all the places I would prefer, going to others that I do not want, and also the costs are really really expensive if compared with the costs when doing by ourselves. So I would prefer to pay an amount of money to a driver. And in some monuments, if there will be a guide, next to the entrance I would pay it separately too. I found the trips with groups and guides too much time doing things I maybe not be that much interested to do specially because I only have 3 days to do it so I needed to tell "look, I would like to visit this, and this and this", to adjust the "tour" to my interests. Thanks for any help.

I wish I could help, but I have actually never hired a private driver, so I have no contacts. Since I bought my motorcycle here, I always drive that around, and before I bought my motorcycle, I always took Uber motorcycle to get around, or took public transportation, like the train. Tour agencies and guides are always expensive, but if you want a tour guide, I would suggest paying for one through an actual company, and not the people lingering outside museums and ancient sites. I did that once, and the tour guide was not good at all. Possibly hard to understand the accent or not the best English, most of the things she said I had already read on Wikipedia, she added no new knowledge, and I think she was just making some stuff up on the spot. She claimed she had a masters in Hieroglyphics, which I highly doubt, why would she be sitting outside waiting for people coming in if she had that level of education, she could just go get a job with a company and get paid much more. She also kept referencing Christianity and the Virgin Mary at ancient Egyptians sites (somehow trying to connect the two?), it was just all very weird. But you are correct, if you want to create your own tour, it is much more expensive. If I were you, I would just take Uber where you want to go. But if you absolutely require a private driver, then I wish you luck in your search! And sorry I couldn't help you there. All the best 🙏

@@Gventures No say sorry I know you are always on bike and I say thank you for your videos. Exactly for them, I see it is possible to do it by ourselves but the "scammers" made me the wish to or to find someone to indicate me a known private driver or to go to the tours. As I said, the problem about tours, is that they have their places specified and sometimes when I find something close to what I want, then other place is missing (for example I wanted to find a tour that would include Isis temple, Kom Ombo temple and Horus temple but or I only find with Isis and Horus without Kom Ombo or the last 2 without Isis). Even if I just stayed 1 hour inside them just to have a "glance" so I must find a driver to hire. Maybe I will try to find an Uber for example and ask him if he would drive me all day in Cairo, and then when in Luxor, to find a taxi driver. Abu Simbel I will go with an organized tour. I found it too far and complicated to go by myself. Thanks a lot. If you wish to be my guide in Cairo, we can use Uber hehe. Or just to take a coffee. Coptic is first and foremost an ethnicity. As you said, Muslim Egyptians are ethnic Copts whose ancestors converted to Islam. Though the majority of Egyptian Christians are Orthodox, there is also a Coptic Catholic Church that is in full communion with Rome! Alex seems like a kind spirit and I really enjoyed your exchange with him. Don’t let any comments from biased individuals whose feelings were hurt by historical facts discourage you. Also, I wish you a lovely and safe stay in our soulful Egypt. Small donation here, wish I could give more! ❤🤍🖤

I think this may be my favorite comment! Thank you so much Miro, I really appreciate your kind words, and you are correct, Alex is a very kind soul, and is truly proud of his faith and his roots. Thank you so much for your donation, but more than that, thank you for your kindness and encouragement. I really love your country and all the beautiful people I meet here ❤

Extremely professional first-class presentation, and very informative - thank you! It reminded me of some Coptic friends I had years ago, who ran the delightfully eccentric Windsor Hotel on Alfi Bey Street, Cairo. It’s like walking into an Agatha Christie novel, with very little changed since the British left Egypt. A few people are trying to find out if this amazing place is still open. Maybe you have heard of it?

Thank you Lesley! Are you talking about this place? maps.app.goo.gl/fD6L3gLzrWQZpnCKA I have never been here or heard of it before, but I must have walked by it dozens of times before.

Awesome! I'm looking forward to seeing them 😊 You should plan a ride to the Monastery of Saint Anthony the great; if you like highways and mountains you'd like that ride... But not in July like I did, if the hot weather scares you much 😅 You'd also stretch more to the Monastery of St. Paul after it, but I returned in same day so didn't have much time

@@fadyromany8345 Yes, since discovering the existence of this monastery, I now do plan to make a road trip to the monastery! I think I would make a several day trip of it though, so I could enjoy and explore a bit. Then I would also have time to visit the Monastery of St. Paul 😁 I have so many trips I want to make, it's just about finding the time to make them all. And you are right, I do not want to drive in the summer heat! 😂 But I want to make a trip to the Nile Delta and visit places like Zagazig, Tanis and Damietta. Another trip northwest to Marsa Matruh, passing through Al Alamein and other coastal cities. If I could take enough time off, I would even like to make it to Siwa (I've been there before, but I took a bus that time). This fall I would really like to drive to Jordan, but there are a lot of logistical issues with that trip, like passing through the Sinai Peninsula (I need a special permit to do that). I think I can probably only take one trip a year for these longer journeys, but there are many I would like to make. So much to explore! ❤

Wow! That also means more virtual adventures for us through your channel 😉 Regarding the trip to Red Sea monasteries, if you not planning to continue to Gouna or Hurghada, I suggest checking St. Paul's hotel maps.app.goo.gl/53wNTPpRZeah35AK6 I'm not sure if it's open for solo travelers, though. Regarding the trip to Jordan, all motorcycles have to get permission to pass, but it's doable within riding groups; I currently recall Omar Al Fardi, you may reach him, he's very helpful and went through it before, I assume www.youtube.com/@omarmansourtrips Can't agree more! There is so much to explore, and maybe I'll reconsider my riding boundaries/ restrictions and just explore 😁 Good luck with your trips!

Giselle!! Thanks again for an insightful posting. Happy that in these day and age Coptic people are not persecuted anymore. I met at one time some Coptic christians and they were very friendly and hospitable. And for that I'm grateful. All the best!
