You may have heard about copyright, but what is it? Copyright is the exclusive legal right given to an originator of a creative work, copyright laws and guidelines serve to protect and encourage the innovative creativity of works. The creator of these works has the right to share their original work as they please. Copyright protects creative works such as books and journal articles.

Authors create these works with their ideas and research and are protected under copyright laws. However, these works can be used under fair use. Fair use is the doctrine that brief excerpts of copyright material may, under certain circumstances, be quoted verbatim for purposes such as criticism, news, reporting, teaching and research without the need for permission from or payment to the copyright holder.

Besides fair use, you can also use material that is considered public domain. This domain consists of creative work to which no exclusive intellectual property rights apply. Those rights may have expired, been forfeited, expressly waived, or may be inapplicable because no one holds the exclusive rights anyone can legally use or references works without permission under certain conditions specified in the law.
