Super helpful. I am about to publish my 2nd kids picture book and didn't add the copyright page for book 1. But I think I'll do it this time. And wait to register with the copyright office. Thanks for posting this. Keep creating!

Thank you for the informative video. It answers many of my questions. However, I do have another question. I have finished writing my story, but I'm still waiting for the illustrations to be finished. Can I get the book copyright without the illustrations? Also, if my book was ready to be sold on Amazon, but it was not copyright, but 3 months later I decided to copyright it, would I still have the legal protection?

I am about to publish my first picture book, and your videos and book have been extremely helpful. I have one question I'm hoping you will answer. I have in my illustrator agreement that I am purchasing the sole and exclusive license to produce, publish, and/or sell the artwork for the legal term of copyright. Therefore, on the copyright page, how do I handle the illustrator copyright line? Does my name go in the "right holder" space since I purchased exclusive rights to the art, or does the artist's name go there? The line I'm referring to is this one: Illustrations copyright ©| year [right holder].

Hi Susan, It sounds like while you purchased an exclusive license to the art, the copyright remains with the illustrator. So if your agreement doesn't state a transfer of copyright ownership, then you would use the illustrator's name after the copyright symbol.

Copyright question… can I mention characters or reference other works? Like if I were to write a side spin off story about one of the characters in Snow White… can I use “snow white” in my book or would I have to change it?

Hello, just found your channel but wish I had found it much earlier. My question is although I obtained my copyrights years ago someone recently published a children’s book on Amazon with my exact title. To add insult to injury their book is listed directly under mine. I filed an infringement that has been entirely useless. Any comments or suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

Hi Cathy! While we can copyright our work, titles cannot be copyrighted. I so hope this answers your question.
