Wow! Eevi you are amazing. You give incredibly important information succinctly. Also, you are so encouraging in a world that can be so disappointing. I am a first time children's author. I went to a Writer's Conference and some of the Home Schoolers and Children's Ministry leaders wanted curriculum to go along with my book. I am assuming I would need an ISBN for that as well (since you mentioned coloring books need one.) I would love to hear back from you. Thank you.

Hi Laura! Thank you so much for your kind words! Yes, anything that we wish to publish for sale on marketplaces such as Amazon, we would have to have its own ISBN, simply so that it can be cataloged and identified. If, however, you'd simply put a curriculum up to be sold and downloaded on your website, then you wouldn't need an ISBN. I so hope this helps! Thank you for another great video Eevi! Does changing the number of pages in your book require a new ISBN? Sometimes a print-on-demand company will require the last page to be blank. For eg where a book has 32 pages with a spot image on the 32nd page (to avoid adding 4 more pages) I assume it would be easier to simply remove the spot image on the last page. However this wouldn't be the case with some offset printers who will accept an image on the last page. If you were using both methods to print your book, you'd have one of the following scenarios; 32 pages for both, but with the print on demand version having one image (spot) less. Or 36 pages with the print on demand company and 32 pages with the offset printer, but all images would be the same. In either case, would they require a seperate ISBN? Apologies for the long question- hope it makes sense! :)

I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed this video. Having a slightly different page count won't require a new ISBN AS LONG AS all the meta data is still exactly the same (e.g., author name, title, sub title, etc.).

Hi Eevi would you recommend a beginner to purchase 1000 ISBNs? The average rice is so much better if I buy bulk...I know most people would advice to purchase 10 or 100 as a beginner but I'm very serious about publishing low KDP books and I do have the funds for it, I live in South America but I do have a LLC in the US. Can you advise please?

Hi Cathy! Even though you are very serious about publishing, I would go ahead and purchase the 10 or 100 package. Once you've gone through the publishing and marketing process a few times and have seen what it is all about, you can always purchase the bigger package. The only time I'd recommend going for the really large option would be if you're also planning on publishing other authors' work under your imprint, and if you are planning to provide all formats - because each would require it's own ISBN (paper, hardcover, etc.). Hi Joudy! How wonderful of you to reach out! If you have already published your book, your back cover will need a barcode. We can either add it to our cover ourselves, or we can opt to have KDP add it for us. If it is an ebook, then it won't need a barcode. I so hope this helps!

Hi Rebecca - you certainly could, but then your book would appear twice on Amazon, with two different ISBNs. So I wouldn't recommend it.

Hi Eevi, please help, I purchased my ISBN and I got a barcode from barcode generator resources in your book but my proof copy from KDP still includes Amazon’s barcode. They placed it over the one that I put on my back cover. Since my book is still in draft, will this change after it goes live? Or is the barcode specifically for book retailers and wholesalers like you mentioned in chapter 6. I will try to order a proof without my barcode and see if Amazon will add my ISBN to their barcode. Do you have any insight on this? Any advice would help:)

I'm so sorry I didn't see your comment earlier. KDP always adds a temporary barcode on any proof copy. So as long as you've checked the box during your cover sheet upload, indicating that you have added your barcode yourself, you should be good to go! Good luck!!

Can you use different imprint names with the bulk ISBN buy? Ex: 5 under one imprint and 5 under another?

Hi Christy! How are you? I hope you've been having a wonderful week! When we are purchasing our ISBN packages on Bowker, we have to enter a publishing name (our imprint). Once our book has been published and we want to assign the used ISBN, Bowker currently inserts our previously entered imprint automatically. So I don't believe we are able to use bulk-purchased ISBNs for different imprints. But perhaps simply reach out to Bowker and ask, just in case. I so hope this helps!

Hi, i came here from your most recent consignment video and I have a question. I only got the Amazon ISBN for my book when I first published because I didn't think I would be doing anything else with it, but I would like to explore the option of selling locally and consignment and all that. How would I go about getting an ISBN and attaching it to an already published book? Is that even possible?

Thanks so much for your kind words! Unfortunately, once an ISBN has been attached to a book, it can't be undone. If you would like to purchase your own ISBN, I went ahead and shared a video on just that. If you are located in the U.S., please do make sure you use only Bowker (the agency mentioned in the video) to purchase your ISBN. You will have to upload your book again. In order to connect it to your current book, it would probably be best to upload your "new" book as a new edition of the "old" book. That way, you can also request for any reviews your old book received to be transferred over to your new version. Hi Laura! How are you? When assigning our ISBN to our book, we are asked to enter a publication date. So technically, you won't be able to do so until your book has been published. Hope this helps!
