For years, Coral Gables homeowner Orlando Capote has resisted attempts to buy him out, even as a new mixed-use development took over the rest of the neighborhood.
Yeah actually, he did "end up in". "end up phrasal verb ended up; ending up; ends up : to reach or come to a place, condition, or situation that was not planned or expected" Words ain't hard, start using the dictionary.
@@lordgarion514to reach for something takes intent. You don’t arrive by sitting still. Which sitting still he was. Dictionaries don’t help if you don’t understand the concept
*i been saying that all along. Even if your house is payed off, your property belongs to the city. thats why you need to buy land and build your own house on it so you own the land and the house.*
@tewthpaste…..You still have to pay property taxes on vacant land….even if you don’t live on it. The government wants their blood money. There is no government in the world that is more greedy than the American government.
FEDS needs to get involved, it seems like the commissioner and other poleticians are in with the project company in exchange for a few hundred thousands under the table, a housing authority agency in New York just got about a hundred of their employees arrest this past week for racketeering, they were giving contracts to service and construction companies to which ever company pay out the most in return for the favor of giving the contract to them, I won't doubt this is what's going on here, also they need to find out who donated election campaign money to this local officials, city mayor and so on.
Absolute absurdity. This is local officials using tactics to flex on this poor man. The developer, the commission, and the lobbyist abusing their power for monetary gain. Ever wonder why a commissioner on a $100,000 salary Lives in a 5 million dollar home, this is just one of their ways.
lol. you are missing what they are doing. There is more than one way to get rid of him and if it didnt happen in the first try they are now using fines and administration cost to overwhelm him with fines that if not paid, they will take his property, with a lien, sell it to the highest bidder which will be the development there since no one in their right mind will buy it, and thus rid themselves of him ...
He's the Ahole. Foreigners move here by the millions and then refuse to allow the city or county to progress? What did he expect? And you know they offered to buy him out at a good price. He should PROVE IT if they low balled him because I don't believe that. He can't have it both ways. Invade our country but don't try to impede our progress. In fact, he should lose his citizenship and be deported for doing that. He can go be an Ahole PIA in some other country. See how far he gets. 😅😅
@@8180634me too. I don’t even live there but I know that we all need to start standing up to the big guys and the only way to do it is to stand together.
All he needs an attorney for is to sell. Minimum 1million for the property, PLUS another property of similar land area and sq ft in somewhere of his choice in an area established for that type of residential use. Because, if for some reason that house should become involved in a fire the damage to the nearby building(s) and property will WELL exceed 1m.
@@amzarnacht6710 Well that's one of the issues, apparently no one is offering him what feels to be fair compensation. With a lien on the property, he can't sell until the lien is released. So basically he's going to need a lawyer to sue the city and developer for biased enforcement of city code among other torts.
My dad used to tell me if you have something somebody rich wants, they’ll use the government to take it from you. Rules for the little guy are way different from the will of the rich and powerful. This is a classic example. There is no justice, they will take what you have…
@@johnbellocchio66Do be quiet. That wasn’t a MAGA comment. It was an **entirely** truthful comment about the **reality** of the “America” we live in. No one is ever required to be "bought out" by a developer. And if your house meets the code in effect when the house was built or added on to, they can't add requirements later and make you upgrade. This is dirty government at its "finest".
He's violating existing codes, not new ones. Grass length is pretty common in most townships, and he can't argue that he couldn't mow the lawn when he remained in residence in the property the whole time they were building around him.
Our ranch in bunker hill was taken by the city by eminent domain after we refused to sell our home. The developers Geoffrey Palmer illegally bulldozed our 1890 Victorian Home and built the Orsini Apartments in downtown Los Angeles in 2003-2004. Instead of $5 million, we were given $500 and 30 days to leave. We had to abandon our vehicles and belongings due to the dangerous construction going on around your house. Developer got a slap on the wrist and no jail time. Same guy who was caught paying a homeless guy to burn his developments to the ground so he can get a zone change
This is the reason you shouldn’t live in Coral Gables. He should sue. It’s obvious they’re trying to force him out. That project should have never gone forward with it enveloping his home. It should be illegal for the city to change the zoning for a project before all of the required land is bought by the developer. Now, they’re just going to take his property. The government in Coral Gables is fascist.
Lol. who is he going to sue and which court will oversee that case!!! So, your solution is for him to sue the city when he cant afford to pay his fines they are badgering him with. Thats a smart thing to do. I guess you dont realize that the judge works for the city . If a judge can screw the ex president of the US and he is all over news with a 83 million verdict and sude step the law to make that happen, this poor guy is screwed. Had he been jewish or black then he could use the race card but he is unfortunately white
You assume this must have been done because people got paid illegally, instead of those people saying it would be best for the entire community to approve this development because it will generate a massive tax influx that the entire community will benefit from, not just a couple dozen single use homeowners. Not real hard to understand why the real world isn't run by comic villains.
@@TruthFictionBUT, they changed the Zoning. Seen that over and over back in the Early '90's back home when the Developers went after all the farm land. They skipped the local government. Went straight to the State.
@@SGTJDerekSo are you saying that zoning should never be changed and that what is farmland should never be allowed to be anything but farmland? Zoning changes because communities progress, expand and grow. Eventually all residential zones will become multi-family high density instead of single family dwellings. That's just the way the world is going to go as more and more people populate the planet. When you can't expand outward anymore, you have to expand upwards.
@@TruthFiction not at all but when Developers by pass local Government and line the pockets in the State Capitol to force a Zoning Change because they've been denied over and over. It was finally stopped and quietly swept under the rug when they F'd Around & Found Out by going after someone's unused Farm land. They thought he was just another out of work farmer when the reality was, he had more money than they did. He just didn't want to sell his family land that went back 7 generations.
@@TruthFiction "Eventually all residential zones will become multi-family high density instead of single family dwellings." this is insane and these population explosions are not sustainable.
Permit required for a temporary EZ UP tent? That's reaching, like requiring a permit to sit outside under an umbrella. And, why would it be his responsibility to keep that project's debris from falling?
Too bad he doesn't have someone looking out for him like that lady that was being bullied off her land, she had big names sticking up for her, lots and lots of $$$$
So it's the typical case of 'BIG MONEY' using petty little code violations in order to force the homeowner out. The city/county is just as culpable in this legal, but morally and ethically wrong, violation of personal rights.
100% of the comments here are from people who don't live in Coral Gables, expressing themselves passionately about the morality of that community. You all don't live there, you don't have a say in how that community is run. Full stop
@@chegadesuade - I agree that probably a lot of the comments come from those that do not live in [even] Florida, but like most people I do not have to be living there to know when someone is getting shafted. It's not about a particular community, it's about what is ethically and morally right.
@@WarHawk- That's a fair point, and I'm sorry if I came off rude, I'm only trying to draw attention to the fact that people outside of a particular community shouldn't dictate how that community operates. Yep, all because he refused to accept the payments that ever other holdout accepted. Instead of thinking with his head, he thought with his greed and wanted more than the developer was willing to pay for one plot, so they simply built around him and now he's finding out that trying for a greater payout and failing has consequences. At this point, his property is practically valueless since nobody would buy it except the developer and at this point, they have nothing to gain by doing so.

@@ShantalhaitianPrincess this is going on in all states. And the main issue are the city councils that allow it. My city council in my democrat state are corrupt. And trying to steal land from an elderly couple.
This is been going on for years, with all the stress he is going to get sick, and they will eventually take over the property, I know it is hard to let go after years but at this point they may take the home and action it and he will be left with no property… I know years ago they offered him money but he refused… just sad
Corruption at the highest level of local and State government. He has to make sure that any falling debris from a building site doesn't harm any of his visiting guests. "WHAT?"
Something similar happened in New York City, Macy's bought out property to build a mega store but one lady refused to sell. The Macys was build around her home and she lived there until her death when the property was sold by her heirs... The difference is that the city did not allowed Macys to become a bully. Of course, that was a different era because it seems like today money buys the electors who are supposed to be working for us.
I remember something like this happened in my town where they were going to build a new grocery store. One elderly man in a home he'd built himself refused to sell. The city made a deal with him and arranged to have the house moved to a different property, which they did. He ended up in a quieter part of the neighborhood and last I heard he was very happy he got to keep his house.
Exactly, the city should have worked with this guy when these monstrosities were being built and seen how they could have made it work for everyone. They are just bullying him out......
How much money did each of the city officials get in bribes from the developers and in my opinion is that they got cash and maybe even gift's to keep it off the books and away from the IRS investigator and this is a perfect example of eminent domain style bribe
Is it really so hard to understand that city officials would approve a massive development which would generate exponentially more tax revenue than a couple dozen single occupancy homes? You have to insist that they took illegal funds instead of thinking "well, this would benefit the entire community, except this one guy who refused to sell his house. Oh well, the good of the many outweigh the greed of the one." He specifically pointed out in interviews that they did not offer him "enough" money, but clearly every other holdout disagreed and took the final offer.
And you know what buddy he has a right to want a million dollars more than you think it's worth it's his house not yours not the city to say we want to build some condos here so we can get more money and kick you to the curb cuz we want people to make money no way buddy screw you
Or, you know, the politicians are thinking the massive tax boost from the development would benefit the entire community, not the couple dozen single occupancy homeowners.
@@TruthFiction for most people the American dream is the security of owning your own home. Possibly something you can pass down. I don't think many people buy homes with the thought that one day they might be forced out by the government from it. I don't know enough about this deal though to know if that complex is paying more taxes that get spread into the community or getting tax cuts for the development. Also we could both be right at the same time, all depends on the people involved.

Talk about code violations. How is it the city allpws those planter to be placed right on the public sidewalk in front of private property. How is those buildings were built so close to the property line to a residential property. This is not acceptable. You do not have the right to take his property away. Pay him is asking price. If it’s that important to the greedy developer who probably paid the corrupt officials to harass him. This is why Americans are losing trust in local state and fed government.
Yes. I saw the house that UP was based on in Seattle. Next to a huge mall and movie theatre and highway. Owner long since deceased, family has the house but the city is leaving it alone.

The fact that they were given permission to build a commercial property in a residential neighborhood says it all. He is entitled to sunlight and they took that away as well.
This sounds like that old story of the railroad baron Charles Crocker building a giant wall around the small property of the man who wouldn't sell to him
The Developers that built around Mr. Capote’s house knew he was not willing to sell and they still went on with their project, building around him. So they concluded his home was/is now a part of that new building blueprint and cosmetic foundation. The developers have to accept that Mr. Capote was there before, during and after their project and it will so help him God remain that way! Let him live peacefully! They all need to ask themselves how would they feel if that was done to their elder father or even to them one day?! Sad enough that they took away the light and beauty of the home and from Mr. Capote! 😔
