Wow, this guy knows his stuff/corals, you can say he has a lifetime in the hobby, being brought up on his dads coral farm, he’s the kind of guy you need to listen to when it comes to looking after corals, he is having great success with his coral farm. You definitely came across another gem here Jake, great video. 👍👏
Hey Jake, this is one of the most enjoyable videos I've watch on the channel. The guys energy is so infectious - I wasn't surprised at his answer at the end.
This is my favorite video from reef builders hands down! This guy really knows his stuff, and that's becuase of his passion for the livestock! I love the greenhouse, so simple, but very smart!! Congrats!!! You have done a great job!
Incredible, unbelievable it for sure super nice , this guy doesn’t go thru any expensive equipment, just basically the sun and a lot of hard work but most of all , no one piece is removed from our oceans he’s creating a great system in the middle of nowhere, great video Jake
I am blown away..... We get dismal grey skies & drizzle here in western Oregon from November to April (sometimes June). Would never have thought this possible! "Nothing too crazy or exotic". He is in business to make a profit-- there is no volume in catering to the "elite" you gotta grow what sells.
Another excellent vid Jake! These guys are simple basic Reef husbandry that is successful! I’ve been in the hobby since 1997 and do the same regiment as Tampico....love the simplicity 😎
I've been watching your videos since you just had video clips of random rare exotic things. I think this is one of your best videos yet. The length is perfect as far as the questions you asked and comments, it was detailed but didn't drag on at all. Interesting that you weren't even planning on going out there. The corals and faces for that matter showed really well in the mix of mostly sunlight and led lights and of course the one or 2 metal halides. I still have almost that identical reflector kicking around. Surprised to see those "upgraded" maxijets still kicking too.
this is my favorite video besides when you went to feed the reef i just love the green house.. believe it or not this is on my bucket list. keep up the awesome work .. love the channel !!
This is one of my all time favorite videos, this guy I would love to meet because it doesn’t get any realer on the simple level. I’ve always said keep it simple, you don’t always need the best of the best out there to get into this hobby. I am definitely looking up his Facebook to hopefully learn more on how to be successful.
Very awesome video Jake! I've always thought sunlit reef tanks were a cool area of the hobby. Keep the videos coming, Reefbuilders is my favorite RU-vid channel for sure. I know you're a busy guy but let's see an update of your 60g reef tank at home! Been dying to sneak a peak of it since you switched over to sps dominant!!
Tidal doesn't use the sun though. They had to basically shield the sun and use t5 or LED because season have way too much of a drastic change in amounts of light from the sun in this area of the country.
Hey man, thank you very much for this interesting, informative video. Of particular interest were the special technique fragmentation of corals and the effective but simple technique of the coral farm. Best regards from Switzerland
Impressive , I've run outdoor tanks and growth and health is insane, it takes a lot of observation to keep sunlight under control. But the rewards are fantastic, I'm now using plasma light and led to get the same result indoors. Spectrum is king. What a champ, doing what he loves and making a living out of it. By the way, no bling here, everything is done for pure efficiency and use case. Redundancy is a big thing, you should have asked him about power? Battery backup etc or generators. Kudos too for him on jumping back on the horse when he lost thousands of corals.
'Absolutely' a 'very cool' video : )))) Uall should make tshirts.. But i must say great vid.. glad to hear from these guys and their thoughts on running their systems.
Love to see others doing natural light for corals. I personally built a 6k gallon Ricordia farm in Tampa Florida using natural lighting with great success. You need deep tanks to filter the red, yellow, green out of sunlight to bring out colors in the corals. Shade cloths only reduce intensity.
That statement at 11:05 the daylight is washing out some of their colors... man we're a spoiled bunch, growing the way mother nature provided? Nah! Lets hammer that with nothing but blue and actinic light! Phosphorescence is the only way, it is the natural look! :D Absolutely love the daylight on these corals. That's how you know which corals are REALLY pretty looking, not the enough blue/actinic to give you cataracts in an afternoon that you always see at the shows
Hey Thanks for the kind words. Yep you did see a Kleins Butterfly. I have several, fantastic Aiptasia eaters and I have been told they eat Zoanthid Nudibranchs as well but I have never confirmed this. They rarely peck at corals and I have really only seen this behavior when they are underfed.
Right now I use Kent, I have used Fritz and Instant Ocean Reef crystals in the past. I have never been too concerned about the brand, to me its more about consistency and making sure to keep water parameters in line.
Being in Oregon...don't you get snow? If so, how do you deal with it with all the screening on top? NW, i looked it up, 5" per year lol you are SO lucky :)
Dumb question but when people such as this owner talk about using blue lights to give the corals better colour do they simply mean it looks better while viewing the coral or does the different wavelength actually make the coral produce more pigment and cause them to physically be more vibrant long term?
