The Ogasawara Islands are located approximately 1,000 km south of Tokyo and are a World Natural Heritage Site, with no airport and the only way to visit them is by boat. The Ogasawara Islands are a treasure trove of endemic species, and can be reached from Takeshiba Pier in Tokyo over 24 hours aboard the Ogasawara Maru, a cruise ship that operates about once a week, depending on the season.
小笠原諸島は東京から約1,000kmも南に離れており、空港がない為に船が唯一の訪問手段となっている世界自然遺産の島々です。季節によりますが、週に約1便運航する「おがさわら丸」という客船に乗って、東京の竹芝桟橋から24時間かけてやっと辿り着ける小笠原諸島は固有種の宝庫でもあります。

その海は透明度が高く、島の周りの浅い岩場は美しいサンゴ礁で覆われて様々な種類の熱帯魚の棲み家となっているので、シュノーケリングで気軽にゆっくりと海の中を観察できます。特に晴れた日は海の中にも日差しが射し込んで、なにもかもがキラキラと輝いて見えるので、時が経つのを忘れてシュノーケリングに熱中してしまうほどです。
There aren't many large fish in the shallow waters of the coral reef, but a whitetip shark appears at 1:44. The whitetip shark is a small, docile shark with a body length of about 1.5m. The whitetip sharks sleep in underwater caves during the day and come out in groups at night, but on this day he was swimming during the day, which was unusual. Maybe another fish disturbed his sleep. However, even if you know that the shark is docile, you might be surprised if a 1.5m long shark suddenly appears in front of you.
サンゴ礁の浅い海には、あまり大型の魚は来ないのですが、1:44にはネムリブカが登場します。ネムリブカは体長1.5m程度の小型のおとなしい鮫です。日中は海中の洞窟内などで寝ていて、夜には集団で現れる鮫なのですが、この日は珍しく昼間に泳いでいました。他の魚に眠りを邪魔されたのかもしれません。しかし、性格がおとなしいとは知っていても、いきなり体長1.5mの鮫が目の前に現れるとビックリしますね。
