Mikura Island, located approximately 200 kilometers south of Takeshiba Pier in Tokyo Port, is home to more than 150 Southern bottlenose dolphins. It takes approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes by cruise ship. The wild southern bottlenose dolphins around this island are curious and very friendly to divers, making Mikura a mecca for dolphin swimming.
東京港の竹芝桟橋から南へ約200キロメートル、大型客船で約7時間30分の距離にある御蔵島には、島の周囲に150頭以上のミナミハンドウイルカが生息しています。この島の周囲の海の野生のミナミハンドウイルカは好奇心旺盛で、ダイバーに対してとてもフレンドリーなので御蔵島はドルフィンスイムのメッカになっており、イルカと一緒に楽しく泳ぐことが出来ます。
In the sea, divers and dolphins maintain eye contact and swim while staring at each other. In many cases, dolphins swim very slowly and playfully, following the diver's movements while trying to communicate with each other by half their body forward. I was having fun with it. It's heartwarming to see wild dolphins playing and communicating with people.
海の中でダイバーとイルカはアイコンタクトを続けて、見つめあったまま泳ぎます。多くの場合、イルカは半身前に出てコミュニケーションを図りながらダイバーの動きに合わせて極めてゆっくりと遊ぶように泳いで楽しんでいます。野生のイルカが人とコミュニケーションをとりながら遊ぶ姿は微笑ましいですね。
In the sea around Mikura island, almost all southern bottlenose dolphins have been named having been identified by the scars on their bodies. Typically, many of the scars are round, caused as a result of being bitten by cookie-cutter sharks. They are 30- to 50-centimeters in length and live in the depths of more than 1,000 meters. At night, they would come up to relatively shallow depths in search of prey. They target not only fish but also whales and dolphins. The way they prey on them is by stabbing them first with the teeth in their upper jaw, then spin their body around gouging flesh out of the victim's body surface, using the serrated teeth in their lower jaw as well. As a result, the scars would appear as if they were gouged out with an ice cream scoop. Fortunately, these rarely become fatal injuries for adult dolphins and better still, they don’t seem to let such physical sufferings get in the way of enjoying swimming together with human divers.
御蔵島では、ほぼ全頭のミナミハンドウイルカが体表面の傷の位置や形状などにより個体識別されており、名前も付けられています。特徴的な丸い形状の傷跡が多いのですが、これは深海に生息するダルマザメに襲われて体表を丸く噛み取られた後に修復された傷跡です。ダルマザメは体長30-50センチメートルで水深1,000メートルより深い海に生息する鮫ですが、夜になると獲物を求めて比較的浅い水深にまで上がってきて、様々な獲物を狙います。魚だけでなく鯨やイルカも狙い、その捕食の仕方は上アゴの歯で突き刺し、それを起点にしてぐるりと回転することにより、下アゴに並んでいるノコギリ歯で相手の身をえぐります。その為、まるでアイスクリームをすくう道具・ディッシャーでえぐり取ったかのような傷跡になるのです。幸いにも大人のイルカの場合は致命傷にはならないのですが、昼間にダイバーと楽しく遊んでくれる御蔵島のミナミハンドウイルカは、我々が知らないところで様々な痛い思いをしているのですね。

Someday, I would also like to play balls throwing and catching a clump of seaweed with the southern bottlenose dolphins of Mikura Island. That would be fun.
