A few fun facts: - The medal Mr. Bobinski wears is a medal awarded to those who helped with the Chernobyl cleanup, explaining his blue skin. - The ‘Welcome home!’ Cake has a double loop in the O, which is typically associated with the handwriting of liars. - The Bedlam’s needle hands are shown as hints throughout the film, like the creation of the doll at the beginning of the movie, appearing in lightning strikes or in the shape of the tree above Coralines head on the cover art. - Miss Spink and Miss Forcible are canonically a lesbian couple in the book, however it was taken out of the film since it’s for kids. - The Other Father is a creation from the Beldam the same as the rest of the world, and is punished by her throughout the film for trying to help Coraline escape, like the hints in the lyrics of the song he sings for her, the piano covering his mouth, the Other Mother dragging him out of the room when he starts talking about the key to the door and of course when he hands Coraline one of the ghost eyes before sinking under the bridge. - The soundtrack of the girls singing was deliberately written with the lyrics being just gibberish words, to give the song an unnerving otherworldly feel - As time goes on, the Other Mother wears clothes that more closely resemble her spider form, until the final night when she wears a dress with a skirt that resembles a spiders bonnet. - In the dining room of the other world, there are three pictures of children’s silhouettes. These represent the three ghost children the Other Mother has already taken - The first night that the Beldam and Other Father say goodnight to Coraline and sit by her bedside, the Other Mother’s shadow on the wall depicts her true form, while the Other Father has no shadow at all, hinting to his non existence outside of the Beldams intent. - It’s much more subtle, but throughout the movie the Beldam is deliberately posed so that the furniture or decorations behind her look like Devil horns on her head - The insects that guard the door in the other world are actually insects depicted on the wallpaper of the original worlds door

You’re right about it not being well received because it was spooky. I remember it was this huge deal, so many parents complaining that it was advertised as a children’s movie and turned out to be scary. The thing is, it never was advertised as a kid’s movie. It just didn’t have a warning that it *might* be too scary for kids. Since then, more adult stories have been told through animation, and parents are putting in more work to do research. I personally think animation can be perfect for telling more adult stories. They can make a huge artistic impact.

That’s the thing. This movie was like a kids horror movie. It was like an intro movie for kids that were too young for more mature horror. I loved this movie as a kid and wasn’t scared of it but I liked reading RL Stein books and ghost hunting. Kids who like scary things will live this movie but kids who scare easily won’t. Know your kids before you pick a movie for them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Reminds me of the horror story book series ( I forgot the author), " Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" that was written for kids, yet many parents complained that it was too scary for kids, even though most kids that read the books loved them. It also made a lot of kids question certain processes like death and the concept of murder and the afterlife, which many parents didn't feel was appropriate for kids to be thinking about. it was so much of an issue that the book series got banned from many schools and libraries carrying kids books.

I love this movie 🥰 The doll was the grandma's missing sister's, who was one of the ghost children. That's why the grandma never rented to those with kids after what happened to her sister. It's assumed that she thought the beldam was maybe dead after all that time so she allowed Coraline's family to move in. After the beldam (an old woman/witch) turned it into Coraline, Wybie found it, stole it & gave it to Coraline without the grandma's knowledge because it looked like her.

Well, the fog was actually separately shot dry ice that was composited into the shots by computer artists, so no that imagery wasn’t computer generated it was generated by film, but there were computer artists involved in all of the compositing and there were things they had to make sometimes - like the fire was hand drawn animation and then they painted it digitally. Small things in a few scenes but they really went out of their way to make anything they had to add a handmade part of the world, so I’d say it is as practical as it can be. I like this style of film because most people these days only think of computer generated imagery when they think about visual effects, but practical effects are visual effects, too, and I love the quirky way of thinking you need to think these snazzy things up.

I love that the Cat runs and gets Wybie to help Coraline at the end against the Witch's hand. They do say the Bedlam -- the other Mother -- uses this other universe to separate unhappy children from their parents and get them to agree to turn themselves over to the Bedlam. Remember, they have to voluntarily agree to be with her. The doll: the Bedlam sees through the doll, kind of like a voodoo. It's resemblance to the child links them so she knows specifically what will work with what child. The grandmother kept the doll because it was her twin sister's; the Bedlam steals it back at the beginning of the movie to make it look like Coraline, so we know that the grandmother's twin sister was the last child that was stolen and killed. The grandmother never saw the doll look liked Coraline, she just knows that Wybie gave away the doll, so she wants it back. Of course she wants it back, it was her sister's. The witch then changes the doll to be coraline's parents which is how she learned how to get them. Another great detail is that there's a photo in the parent's bedroom that shows them with Coraline at the Detroit zoo and they're all very happy. Coraline's hair is also brown, showing that this is before she rebelled when they moved and dyed it blue. It also explains why that is the mother's favorite water globe. There are two deleted scenes that I wish they had kept because it explains the family better: the one in the kitchen where the mother mentions the accident tells you that they were originally supposed to arrive over a month earlier but they had an accident with the car that got them delayed. That also means the deadline that they have in 3 days was originally going to be over a month for them to get it done. But now they only have 72 hours which is why they have absolutely no time to step away from their computers. As freelancers, if they don't get this job the family has absolutely no money. So the parents aren't always like this, it's a crunch situation but added to the move that Coraline didn't want, and the witch sees away to steal another child. Remember that there hasn't been a child in the house since the grandmother's sister. So the witches running out of energy which is why she says she can't survive without Coraline.Second, the father deliberately works on an old computer, one that does not automatically save word processing files. In a cut scene before he serves dinner, coraline's mom tells the father that he needs to get a modern laptop so that he won't lose files like this again, but he loves his old computer that he's been using since college. They also say that the father cooks and he can do simple things okay but when he starts to do recipes, he's a terrible cook. Through the doll, the witch finds this all out about Coraline which is how she knows things like food, the garden, and playing with the parents are ways to get at Coraline. Although it's interesting because the other father's song is all by warning to Coraline about what's going to happen with the witch (Bedlam). The book was written by Neil gaiman when he had daughters and he wanted them to have a character that was brave enough to stand up in this situation and be the hero. He meant to name the character Caroline but mistyped it and fell in love with Coraline. The studio that made the movie needed money a few years ago and they sold off all the sets and dolls. I wish I had the kind of money where I could have bid in that auction LOL

There's some great "making of "stuff for this one. The craftmanship is amazing! The story is based by a book by Neil Gaiman, who also wrote the book that the show "American Gods" are based on, and the Sandman comics that are being made I to a TV series now. He also co-wrote "Good Omens" with Terry Pratchett (and wrote the script and was showrunner on the miniseries by the same name). "Good Omens" is much more lighthearted than the others and really funny. 😊 He also wrote some episodes for Doctor Who. And probably more. (And lots more books, just talking movie / TV here ;) ) He is really prolific, and REALLY talented! So, I would go to a girls camp throughout my teen years, and one night one of my cabin leaders had brought a tv and decided to play coraline on a vhs tape for everyone to watch at the lodge before lights out. Anyway, we had this thing where we were assigned to make a gift for a random girl in the camp, kinda like a secret santa sorta thing, and we had to place it on their bed when they weren't around so they wouldn't know who the gift was from. Usually it was a nice letter or a bracelet. Well we were all pretty unsettled after the movie, and when we walked back to our cabins, one of my friends started screeching, cause some girl had made a doll that looked exactly like her with button eyes and had placed it on her bed while we were watching the movie. The sets and models were all practical, I'm pretty sure the only computer techniques that were used were to transition one frame of the stop motion to theother Even her sweater and gloves were actually hand-knit by an expert at knitting tiny things.

About the doll, before the other mother changes it into Coraline's form, it had the form of her last victim who was Whybie's grandma's twin sister. If you look attentively the photo he shows to Coraline, of his grandmother and her twin, you can see one of the girl with a doll who looks like her so I suppose she keeps it as a memory of her. I think the lesson is more to learn to children to appreciate what they already have

My old house used to have a small door like that, exactly the same size where i can crawl through.... But it wasnt blocked by walls, it was just an empty space to store things. I was still creeped out, really. I never came near that door.

Ahh so happy to see you react to this movie! It's definitely super creepy but the story just pulls you in! One theory about Coraline is that she never actually gets back home, which is one that I find very compelling but makes the story waaay more creepy if you believe it. Also your cat is so cute!

Mr Bobinsky if you look closely has a medal that was awarded to the liquidators of Chernobyl, the people who went in there to clean the whole city up, exposing them to a lot of radiation. That could be why he has blue skin, and his fondness for beets, as they are supposed to be good helping some of the symptoms of radiation poisoning.

Theres a theory out there that coraline never actually left the other world. The theory goes that there are 3 levels to the world, level one is the real world, level two is the "other world", the perfect one. But the third level is a fake version of the real world. So when coraline thinks she has escaped, shes actually fallen deeper into the trap. Theres a youtube video explaining it much deeper and i highly reccomend it to anyone interested. Its called "coraline core theory" by "the fangirl" :)

I guess, the doll itself is enchanted. Just think about it: 1) we know that the doll is the spy and the "other mother" can see through its button eyes 2) Coraline never gave back the doll to Whybie 3) we see Coraline's parents doppelganger doll (with one parent on each side) that she burned after finding, but no traces of the Coraline doll. I don't know how the Other Mother got hold of the old doll and replaced it with the renewed Coraline edition of it or the merged parents doll. Could it have been the rats that bring stuff over to her, or maybe, she can control the magic she gets from the children's lives.... In true honesty, we don't know so much about the other world the Beldame resides in, its rules, ins and outs. We can see the story just this much and that's what makes it so special - we can make the back story of Beldame and how she operates, feeding of the traces of info that was left behind in the film and the book (which is way creepier than the film, by the way) I think that Whybie's grandma really suffered the loss of her sister, who, just like Coraline, was in love with the world hiding behind the little door. Maybe, she got to connect some of the dots, but never knew the actual cause of the missing kids. Still, she thought that the place itself was evil and nothing like the picture. That's why she never agreed to let families with kids to move in before or let Whybie anywhere near it. And finally did it only because she thought that after her lifetime it was safe-ish. My guess is that she had kept the doll as a memory of her sister (most probably, due to the fact that the doll originally looked like her). But then, Whybie finds the doll, it looks just like Coraline. He finds it amusing and gives it away to her. Then Grandma might have wanted to do something with the doll (I don't know whether she wanted to put it on the mantlepiece or next to her on the bed) and couldn't find it. So when Whybie told her that he gave the doll to the girl who just moved it, she was alarmed and told him to bring it home. I mean, don't you think that's exactly what happened to her sister - getting a doll, talking about other parents in another, better world, and disappearing without a trace?

Since you've seen this, I recommend you also see paranorman. It isnt exactly like coraline, but it was made by the same people and I like it as much as, if not more than coraline

My theory based on what we know is the grandmother heard her sister’s stories about her Other Mother shortly after finding the doll and before vanishing and never being found so Whyborn’s grandmother probably suspected “The Other Mother” aka “The Beldam” was responsible and after seeing the doll had changed from an exact match of her sister to another girl that was more then enough conformation for her so she locked it away where she hoped no one would ever find it. But then Whyborn finds it, and takes it, and gives it to a girl in the pink castle! Why would he do this? Because the doll looks exactly like her! Obviously after hearing the doll was given to a girl that looked exactly like the doll which used to look exactly you like her sister before changing which it did after she disappeared I think we can safely assume she flipped out! Who wouldn’t when learning the horror they spent decades fearing and trying to prevent was happening again and their grandchild was had inadvertently put an innocent girl in the crosshairs of the same monster that took their sibling away?! So that’s why Whyborn went to get the doll back because his grandmother for reasons he couldn’t fully understand was “really mad about it”. But Coraline’s insanity scared him more then his grandmother’s anger. But it was probably then that Whyborn’s grandmother realized that keeping it secret was the wrong way to go about it and she should’ve told Whyborn about why the doll was soninoortant. So she gave Whyborn the picture and told him the whole story and then everything that Coraline said made sense, and he also realized that she might still be in danger so he went back and that’s when he found her being attacked by the hand.

The doll at the very beginning looked like the smaller ghost girl who was the grandma’s missing sister, the beldam redone the doll to look like coraline. The grandma kept it because it looked like her missing sister but when wybie found it it looked like coraline so he decided to give it to her but the grandma was mad and wanted it back because it was her sisters and before it looked like her

I love real stop-motion and the love that goes into it. Here is a cool little fact for you. There were 24 different puppets of Coraline used in the making of the movie, each one took 10 individuals and 3-4 months to construct. Also, the song that the other father sang to Coraline foreshadowed other mother wanting to put her button eyes on Coraline. "When she comes around exploring Mom and I will never ever make it boring Our eyes will be on Coraline"
