In this, I investigate the game platform and engine, Core, and explore my opinions on it. Check out my other videos! My website: ceebox.github.io/ Discord Server: / discord
One criticism has been met! Core now has a way of monetising games! Edit: At some point, I said that Lua is not a Turing complete language. It is! This is why you always double-check your sources. That doesn't stop it being a terrible language though.
For some reason, this video has blown up (at least by my standards), and I am so, so, so sorry to all the people here who have to watch this AWFUL intro. It gets better, don't worry.
I guess im quit late to comment on this video but just wanted to point out that lua does have classes, or lets say some part of it, you can make them using meta tables with specific meta methods and it has things like inheritance and also something called composition which is making a class out of an already made class, so the language is already powerful on its own and you can achieve a lot once you master it
The reason it drops your fps when you are standing still is to help with perfomance, the game may try to detect you being afk and reducing fps or graphics to lessen the load on ur pc. just a thought, defly fixed by now so idek why im commenting this, but great video
I'm sorry for the horrible intro, but I felt it was the best way to get my feelings across quickly. I want to assure you that the Core developers are actually very nice people, and they helped me with making this video. I have also heard speculation about the Core team discussing a way of getting creators revenue for their games, so there is one problem solved, happy creating! RU-vid Compression doesn't seem to like this, if you can, watch it in 4k for a higher btirate.
You did great and said everything I was thinking. Except for one thing that's making me crazy. The extremely loud footsteps. Apparently, that can't be changed. It really needs to though. I'm going to stick around for a bit. Hoping more tutorials come out. Designing is great! Getting things to work, I'm lost. I even tried looking for Lua tutorials and so far, all of them have been too confusing. I made a side scroller game in Unreal by following tutorials, so I get how things should work to a degree. Anywho, thanks for the video.
Ive always been fascinated with creating games and programing them but I have never had the great understanding of what in the actual f Im doing in the art of programing and so I was never determined to do so but seeing this platform and its programing has inspired me to give this path of life a second try. I hope this platform becomes big soon. Also liked your content so Ima be your 581 sub.
if you're trying to make a FPS it's pretty decent. the skins are really childish and I wouldn't actually play 98% on there for that reason and alot of people agree with that mindset, so that being said your customers would mainly be limited to children who have their own computer and also have heard of steam and also find your game, or other programmers who want to probably just steal your ideas. so I'd only use it as a learning device rather than something to stick to.
I see Core and Roblox much the same way as I see Hytale and Minecraft. I believe that some see the more feature-rich alternatives as upgrades or even sequels, but I do not believe that there is any replacing it overtaking eminent. The "originals", as some people call them, have their place, and likely always will.
i use UE4 VS, Bolt (unity), c# (unity) and lua (roblox) and i personally find lua to be simpler and the simplicity lets me do lots of cool stuff that C# and other scripting languages make complicated, ive been doing roblox studio since i was about 10, and when i was 11 i started unity, then did UE4 for a bit but finidng it too weird i went back to unity
There's quite a bit of ppl around now. Never ran into an empty game and i think there's a store connected to every game now and "let's stay connected" window. My issue is it doesn't pull me in for long. It's fun to golf or be a marble or do some puzzles with/against others but never lasts long
I feel like I like the eco system of games SDKs and tool set(like hammer editor) released by Valve more. But seems like kids nowadays don't play valve games at all nor touching those tools to make mods, which can almost be standalone games.
Valve missed their opportunity to make Source 2 better and more accessible to people in this current generation. It is a massive disappointment that they didn't capitalise on it. It may have even challenged Unreal Engine for market share.
I just have one problem, I currently want to make a 3D game but I don't have money or coding knowledge, I tried unity but the interface is a little intimidating is there anything helpful you can tell me about this perdicament? This is good but I want to export the game as well and make my own characters and cutscenes
I started coding in GML with GameMaker Studio and then eventually moved to Roblox after learning some Javascript and C#. Lua is the only language that I still constantly mess the syntax up on because it's so non-standard
@@Chadderbox For me, I think the hardest differences are the lack of semicolons and the structure of "if" statements, at least in Roblox. Most are just if () and then brackets, but for Lua, you've got if () do and then "end" at the end instead of using brackets
@@MarioMario-yb3iz Because computers and pretty much every other language start at 0, so to start at one tends to throw everyone off for a while until they remember
Out of curiosity @Chadderbox, have you gone back to assess how Core has developed over the past year? Your review was good and I'd be interested in seeing what its like, today, in your opinion.
I was actually going to do a "Core in 2022" video at some point soon, I'm a bit busy at the moment. They do allow you to make money from your games now I've heard.
@@Chadderbox - Really? That's pretty cool! Mostly, I'm an old, old tabletop gamer who has always loved just sitting down and making games. I keep thinking it would be fun if I could simply slap together rules-sets for video games without having much coding skill and give it a shot. Not looking to make money from it, but that's definitely a plus! I hope you do get a chance to do a follow-up, Chadder; I like your insights! Thank you for responding!
I always thought about getting into core to try it out but never took the time because I am used to unity for years and Unreal is also super tempting. Would you recommend in any way to try core when you are already an experienced dev?
I'm ngl, I feel a little mislead by all of the ads that RU-vidrs are doing. They keep promoting this as a game-dev tool kit but it's hardly that. You can't export your projects, and honestly I think that's a good thing. The style is way too similar to Fortnite, the video literally recognises this game as Fortnite. If they were to allow you to make executables then I feel like steam greenlight and android play store would be drowned in Fortnite BR copies made by 12 year olds.
I wasn't sponsored in any way to make this video, and I completely agree. I think it is more targeted at the kids who look at these videos and want to do it themselves but in an easier way. Edit: but what you said about flooding the stores with rip-offs, I think either way this is going to happen. Instead of this they might just pick up AppGameKit and make something terrible, but AppGameKit does allow uploading and compiling to an exe, yet I don't see too many of these on the stores.
@@Chadderbox With things like AppGameKit, it's pretty much all code. You have to learn the language before getting into it, especially with 3D. Core just gives you everything. 3/4 of the games I joined on Core yesterday had no objective, no motive and were incredibly boring. It's a fantastic tool for people who are serious about developing games on the platform, but the way it's being marketed (Fortnite-esque style) is like a magnet for kids wanting to make their own Fortnite spin offs. It would be really cool to see some kind of regulation involved in the game, I know that kind of goes against the whole marketing strategy they're going for with "Anyone can make a game" but their platform is going to get a bad reputation for how powerful it is since it just allows kids to drag in their pre-made fortnite assets and publish. Very similar to how Apple users view Android, they think it's a terrible platform because of all the cookie cutter companies making cheap, stock phones but in reality it's a great platform.
Yeah, AppGameKit was an example but there are plenty others. I agree with you here, but ultimately it is just going to descend into low quality ripoffs. Maybe some high quality stuff will emerge like on Roblox (well, not high quality but you know what I mean).
They said they have been working on making the game available across a variety of platforms when they get far enough into developing the main meat of Core.
One thing I didn't see in your review, although I may have missed over it, is it possible to create your own assets so you're not limited with the cheesy, fortnite-esque style?
OK, so I'm really new to game making ( sigh ) - all I did mess with was game Guru ( enough said ) - But here's the question...I want to create a game based on something that uses an underwater theme - is this engine able to handle such a thing? ( allowing the user to create underwater worlds - or is it just a " typical " shooter / simple game maker?
Nice to hear that you are trying to get into making games. I'd say give this a try for your underwater game, because it is free so you aren't really losing much. However you can't export your games and only people with Core can play them. Maybe you could try Unity to learn to make games. (Have a look at Brackeys on RU-vid for some good Unity tutorials.)
The problem of core is that its trying to make a better Roblox for the developers and players. They picked Lua so Roblox developers would switch. That killed the creativity of their platform.
what I don’t like with core is that it’s too good, especially regarding graphics and quality, I don’t like that very much, but roblox needs a competitor so I’m all for it, but it’s too complex and it won’t have that nostalgia when it becomes older, so idk
You download the executable from the Core website, and let it install. I wouldn't assume you need a password, but my pc is set so I am the administrator, so I wouldn't know.
It looks very promising, but right notes I can’t bring myself to ditch Unreal Engine. Biggest problems I see right now (and I’m sure this will change with time) but for the time being: 1) small community and somewhat worthless tutorial videos. I’ve tried watching a dozen different videos just to see what Core offers and the tutorials are usually someone hosting another developer and asking them questions, and their answers are usually horrible. Plus, they just talk about hire to duplicate and find objects. Seems very difficult; right now, to actually find tutorials in creating custom events and such. 2) The inability to import custom content. This is really the biggest one for me. I love to create my own assets and bring them into an engine. Core isn’t offering this right, and it seems almost pointless to try looking for tutorials on how to create custom content for use in your own Core project (similar to point 1). If you guys made it so we could create our own content or characters, that would be a game changer. If there is a way, then I’m not finding it at all because of the lack of tutorial content. 3) As far as I can tell ( and I could be wrong here) there didn’t seem to be much of a way to change a lot of the things. I’ve only seen videos where a terrain designed guy said he needed to do some scripting to change something… and then he never did it. Seems like an awful amount of headache trying to search for hard to find tutorials, for an engine that pretty much keeps you limited to its small base of content, like characters and layouts. I’m sure this will change with time. I think Core is doing a great job. Maybe try to get the community to do a lot more tutorials and add the ability to import our own content. At least show us how we can create brand new stuff.
i thought it was gold, turns out shit can be yellow its basically epic games trying to make their own roblox, because they saw Roblox is making shit tons of money they said they want to be with roblox but they are ripping off roblox games , they are taking roblox devs and they even use the same programming language
in my opinion, i dont like core since it doesnt let you import your own assets and 3d models and you have to use the pre-made models, meaning that the visual styles for core games are all the same
@@Chadderbox is there a way to change its aesthetics, I never found fortnite to be an appealing looking game. I am a designer, or I want to be and I suck at programming 7w7. Heard from someone is not as complicated as other platforms, but I do care for aesthetics.
Sorry to ask, im a bit of an insecure person when downloading things I don’t know, it mentions something about letting Core manage my device, is it okay to say yes or should I deny it
Yeah, a suprising lack of depth is a good way to put it. I tried out the shooters and they were so full of bugs they were unplayable. How do I find dev made games? Edit... so I kept watching and you're also right about it not running well. I still have a 1070ti, and not only did it not look great, but my card got hot quickly.
Yeah, I wish I was using RTSS at the time instead of Fraps, because I am not sure if it is GPU or CPU limited. I'd reckon it might be GPU considering all of the weird effects.
I just came here to joke about Roblox, but as I see it, I wasn't the only one who thought about it. And what about OSX/Linux (*NIX) systems? Again, no "good" drivers?
I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude at all in this next sentence(--edit mid way through writing this, did not realize it was gonna be this long--), but; Roblox is NOT a game, as 8 years of playing Roblox, I become very triggered when A: people call Roblox a game, and B: people call Roblox a Lego game. Roblox is a website. And not many people know this but, Roblox was made before Minecraft. Yeah, this is irrelevant, but I felt people needed to know this. To go in depth a little on what I know, Roblox started development in 2004, and was called DynaBlocks. Then 2 years later, it was the first ever release of 'Roblox', and the reason they changed the name from DynaBlocks, to Roblox. Is because people can remember Roblox much better then DynaBlocks. And onto the Minecraft release, it was released and published in 2009. That's a whole 3 years later, I don't really know much on the Minecraft topic, which I will be looking into as of now, when I'm done writing this whole thing, lol. Thanks to anyone who reads this, especially you ChadderBox. I'm just becoming tired of people calling Roblox a game, and then sick of people calling it a Lego game, it's not. And again, I am not meaning to be rude with this whole nonsense. The only way I'm able to tell I'm tired, if I type like this, I should definitely go to sleep soon. (11:33 PM) On the good side, I'm super excited to try this out, can't wait for it to get popular. Hope it stays in Open Alpha for quite some time, as my current PC can't handle it. Will get my gaming PC back soon. It's being repaired. It looks amazing, I could care less that it looks like Fortnite, everyone on Roblox that I know of, said and hated Rthro when it came out, or just hated the idea of it. But after a few months, everyone liked it, or could care less since it was a permanent feature. I can't wait for Avatar Customization if it comes out, as I will be looking into this Platform way more. I'm with this 100%!! I'm just gonna post this comment and quit typing, I could literally go on for a half an hour, an hour. I mean, I've put about 15 to 20 minutes into this. So, I'll look more into the release and first versions of Minecraft, and will comment it on my comment.
I think this is the longest comment on my channel hahahaha. I recognise that roblox is a platform for making and sharing games, which is why I mentioned it. It is the only thing that really compares to core. I can't exactly remember what I said here, but if I did say it was a game, there is a high chance that I was talking about the games made with Roblox (which, with a few exceptions, can be grouped quite well into one of a few categories).
The unreal engine is capable of *far* more than the fortnite style. They chose to go with that style because they knew it was going to attract all the fortnite kids to use it. I pray they don't allow you to create executables of your games, if they do the market is going to be flooded with Fortnite BR clones.
No, it requires a pretty decent pc. The website states: Minimum System Requirements CPU: Intel Core i5-7400 or AMD equivalent RAM: 8 GB GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or AMD equivalent OS: Windows 10 64-bit
So here is my final standpoint on this game, it’s like a much simpler and marketable roblox, which is just simply worse than the roblox engine in so many ways. Roblox despite its blocky style is still a much more powerful tool, yet takes much more effort and learning to use well. I imagine most people will start on core, then move to roblox.
@@polarcat0156 only for game scripting , most of the engine is built with C++ and the less intensive parts which don't do much (like the editor gizmos) are built with lua
Fortnite is rated 12 and there is still loads of kids on it, and they still market to children under the age of 12. The guidelines do not need to be stuck to, they are just advice to say who should be playing it. It isn't like RU-vid where you get sued if you market towards people under the intended age rating of the platoform.
the Fortnite skins ruin it. development doesn't interest the younger or more casual gamers. and for people like me that want to develop some stuff...I had an easy time modding command and conquer, making maps on warcraft3, age of empires, etc. I had to watch a RU-vid video on even how to move the camera. it really for me comes down to the assets are weak. they should have went with more edgy or realistic in any way graphics because they advertise the unreal engine. and the menus and U.I. are just...hard to navigate I'd say. tbh I came in wanting to make a RTS...but it was pretty limited on that regard. then I wanted to make an RPG. but...Fortnite is gay...
If an "engine" is marketed as "easy", and "no experience needed" and such things you know it will attract lazy people with no skill. So obviously most "games" made with core will suck ass.
I have tried Core Game Engine, and I have noticed 2 shortcomings with this engine: 1- You can't export your game nor can you save it as a standalone .exe file for others to play. 2- You can't import assets nor can you create your own assets. The engine may be a little easier than some others, but with these 2 shortcomings. it is totally useless. What is the purpose of creating a game with Core if you can't save it out for others to play? They would have to install the game engine to even be able to play any game created in it. Again a totally useless game engine.
As i understand its good for slapping together a core game and prototyping a game amongst the community. then once you've hit a favorable reaction you can move over to UE4 where you'll refine and add more
