Aggressive Vocal Course: www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/the-...
Free Voice Lessons: chrisliepe.com/free-your-voice/
My Website: chrisliepe.com
Corey Taylor's un-matched distorted and 'screaming' vocals are heard in great detail when you're able to examine the studio isolated vocal tracks. It's also interesting to peel back the intricate layers that go into creating the vocal sound you hear on the full mix.
It's not as simple as it initially sounds. There's a lot of clean singing, some dialed-in audio distortion and other subtle production tricks that all work together to bring out the threatening, yet most enjoyable vocal sound of Corey Taylor.
Btw... Corey doesn't use your typical 'fry' or 'false cord' techniques. Corey has his own brand of distorted vocals. Let's figure out how he does it so we can try stuff with our own voices!
By going through these isolated tracks with me, you'll walk away with some practical things to try with your own voice and recording setup that will definitely level up your aggressive vocals and production!

I learned how to do Corey's vol. 3 scream through a lot of trial and error, and can confirm it's something else entirely when it comes to screaming. It's like yelling really loud at the back of your head, using your soft pallet as a guide you can get some crazy high distorted screams. It's kinda like yelling in your mix voice with tonnes of compression. It's crazy.
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 3 года назад
YES. Corey Taylor YELLS... He doesn't really "scream" as we think about it usually. But there's lot of refinement that goes into it!
@Hackerpro-qw2ls

That’s rad dude i’m sure it was difficult at first i could do the Iowa scream and Self Titled scream.
@XxEvilghostxX1
@XxEvilghostxX1 3 года назад
@@Hackerpro-qw2ls I mean, the Iowa and Self Titled screams will fuck you up. There is barely any technique whatsoever, just a guy mad at the world screaming his guts out. Corey only managed to keep them going for two albums because he was so drunk, but once he got sober, he realised how much his voice hurt beacause of this. So yeah, for your own sake, I would advise not to continue ST and Iowa's screams as they are doomed to fuck your throat.
@Hackerpro-qw2ls
@Hackerpro-qw2ls 3 года назад
@@XxEvilghostxX1 bro I understand i just do those once in a while, but i do safe techniques for screaming but i’m trying to learn M. shadows technique. So yeah i know about Corey changing his screams also it’s good that he changed his screams, if he didn’t his voice will be screwed. So Corey Taylor wasn’t really pissed at the world, he dealt with his own problems. The only scream that i have trouble with is the high scream that one is the hardest for me,
@steverumpli4663
@steverumpli4663 3 года назад
@@XxEvilghostxX1 You are only right in the sense that he screamed with more emotion and less technique. But in reality, you can scream any style you want as long as you do it with the proper technique lol. Learning proper vocal techniques from Chris and from other people like Ken Tamplin or Melissa Cross. Even Chris himself can scream just as hard as Corey did on the first album, but also won't hurt himself doing it. So I would just say don't let emotion over run proper technique. But to tell people to not take on a certain sound is silly. Just take care of yourself while experimenting, understanding vocal compression, your vocals chords and how they react to yelling/screaming. I strongly believe Chris's lessons will help anyone with this 😉

@@AlegendaryWarrior yea thats the key, just wreck yourself and drink and smoke alot and then you will become corey taylor. easy as that. he had a really bad (or no at all) shouting technique on IOWA and hurt his vocal cords a lot. but thats what makes it sound meaty, gnarly and impressive. but let me tell you, that is gone really fast if you do not adapt your technique ;)

In his live performances of 2003 you can hear his scream starting to fall apart but the vol 3 record, his screams still sound almost exactly like the Iowa record. It's his live vol 3 performances where his screams were so obviously screwed, even though in a weird way it still sounded great. Corey Taylor is an absolute mad man with the mic.

Hi Chris! Awesome video as always! Since you mentioned throat singing, blending fry, I'd like to just raise the a subject that I never saw here in the channel (might not fit, but, it's pretty interesting) which is singing subharmonics, "easily" providing a bonus octave below our lower notes. Geoff Castelucci would be a reference for that. More versatile singers like Mike Patton make use of that as well for crazy low notes! :) I had a lot of fun with that and, good part is that although it needs a lot of practice, your neighbors won't hate you! lol

Chris Liepe+ Great video, with a very original take and explanation. I have some tapes of Corey singing/screaming I recordes back in 1999/2000 when we were driving around Detroit in my car. I will post them in the next few months. Im glad professional vocal coaches have taken notice of his talent. I dont think anyone can touch his screams, its a proven miracle that his voice never goes out on tour, or while recording. Interesting note, far as I know, Corey's 5 ½ octave voice is the widest vocal range or any male singer, aside from Mike Patton who is said to have a 6 octave range. Thanks again for the video!

I got some insight from this video into how I can sing and record some spoken verses on heavier parts of a rather dark song of mine. Thanks

sweet vid. the last couple time's he sings "all i've got is insane", it sounds like they're pitching up other takes an octave to add harmonics

This was really helpful, Id like to make some sort of trap metal but I still struggle to do the "screamo" voice and this helps to make a better vocal overall

Wow these isolated vocals were awesome to listen to. Never would have guessed how much clean harmony he was using, almost to a theatrical Queen extent… except in a horror context lol. I just tried doubling my vocals in one of my choruses to get a Dave Grohl type sound after watching that video you did for recording revolution. Might have to try some layering next
