Jonathan Davis' style is like am abstract painting that comes to life and attacks you the minute you think you've seen a face or shape you can make sense of. But it is sure FUN to dig into!
Moving between pent up and all out aggression, moaning, whispering, half rap/scat, tortured beat-boxing, rhythmic shrieks and inhales ... It's ALL THERE... It's all amazing!
Join me for this in-depth study, using isolated studio recordings from "Freak On A Leash". I not only explain but actually demonstrate and break down how to learn key passages of this song and JD's style. You'll also get a few production insights along the way!

Jonathan's voice has also aged so well. A lot of people onlly talk about his old songs, which is amazing, but barely anyone talks about his vocals in Korn's newer stuff, like on The Nothing. Such emotional, wide range vocals by him on that album... BTW, Thank you for doing this one, Chris! Been requesting it for a while!

Jeez, i was going to say that "ooh, another 99th video about the "Freak on a Leash", good but not great" but i believe that this one is the most detailed breakdown and i found a lots of stuff that makes vocal in this song so great (and i'm really impressed that JD did that almost at the start of his vocal career). Really really great work, Chris! And the scat-part was really interesting. Nevertheless i'd like to know something about newer albums ("The Nothing" especially) cause i have a feeling that whole RU-vid is stuck in these 2000-2005 so there's nothing new for 10-15 years. Annd. So many people think that he's moaning all the time like a sheep 'cause he's doing it in this very famous song. But he isn't doing it all the time and there's a bunch of another cool techniques he uses. Songs like "Let The Guilt Go" or "Holding All These Lies" are great as well and quite various in vocal aspects but kinda underestimated Thanks again anyway for this video, been waiting so long for JD'd style
@northtimo666
@northtimo666 3 года назад
True. His new work is often overlooked because they aren’t as big pop hits as the old ones but actually in many ways the new stuff is fresh and fun after hearing the old stuff thousands of times. The Nothing is up there with their finest work in a modern way.

Like how Jonathan actually uses grit in the first verse of the song. Mind blown there LOL If possible in the future could you do a vocal breakdown on Are You Ready to Live? I appreciate that you get that looking a little silly every once in a while so you can actually get your point (and the information) across in a way where people have examples to use as a reference for the different stages of actually GETTING to the sound they're trying to achieve. Most people worry about looking cool and tough while giving people like.. 5 bullet points of "no shit" generalities with no examples. Seriously, GREAT stuff you're doing here.

I can already tell this will tie in nicely with your video on Chester. They both use that whiny, compressed whisper as a way to preface the heavy chorus. Jonathan always seemed to have a lot more instability in his voice, though. Edit: nice British accent at 5:21

Minor? Major? Augmented? Diminished? 2) Can u show us how to get the Skrillex/Korn sound? Any free software out there for dubstep metal djent???? Am I asking for too much? Ra5

1) They use Harmonic minor and play with the 5th, so ya, Aug and Dim... It's so cool and different sounding how they implement it. 2) Great idea! Logic Pro X does great with these styles. GarageBand is a great place to start if you need free and have a mac!

I love the way you teach, if any of your courses or videos are heavily chest/ foundation based (I have no issue in paying for a course haha) please point me towards it. Funny thing, I came to this video right after your older video on Confidence, and it feels like this song really embodies that mindset. Even the verse is kinda "soft and whisper"-like, but pretty far away from any "correct pitch". And obviously the whole guttural-percussion-segment takes this to an extreme, but very notable even before that :)

I think what's most interesting about him is that he knows perfectly how to sound like he's on the edge of freaking out, and I believe this mindset takes you to 80% of the way to sound "like" him, I mean, take this richness into your own singing :) Now I'll wait longer for some content on Roy Khan. I grew up on this type of music & to watch you break down the vocals like this was truly special to me. Amazing work!! Just goes to show how far ahead these guys were at the time of the recording 🔥
