the main purpose of corksrcrew punch is to enable the fighter to hit the opponent while evading a straight punch. It's use mostly as a counterattack, twisting motion of the arm aids the fighter to evade punch to the head.

It may annoy some that there are those who came here from an anime like Hajime no Ippo, but it's surely a good thing to have people take an interest in real life boxing because of the show. ... i am a huge fan of Hajime no Ippo and know approximately jack shit about actual boxing and would never presume to think otherwise. All the show did was give me a casual interest, which I'm planning to take further through trying boxing. I'd imagine most who've seen the show would know there's a massive difference between it and real life.

The first time I heard about this was from the classic boxing manga/anime Ashita No Joe, where it was the signature technique of the final and most powerful antagonist of the series: the Bantanweight World Champion Jose Mendoza. Until now, I actually believed it was all fantasy. I'm pretty surprised to see that it actually exists in real life (although not as flashy and over the top as in the series, of course). It tells a lot of how truly knowledgeable its author was about the sport.

The term "corkscrew hook" was in Jack Dempsey's book "Championship Fighting". As another commenter said, it was an evasive punch. Basically you slip right and jab at the same time, but do it in a way so the slipping motion adds extra power to your own jab. This basically turns your jab into a hybrid punch that is 50% jab and 50% hook, and turns the palm down in a screwing motion. In other words, the guy in the video doesn't know what he's talking about.

Joking aside, this is not Date's technique. Date throws a corkscrew hook as described by Bruce Lee. It's on p112 if you have Tao of Jeet Kune Do. Here's an excerpt "From your on-guard position, start your shoulder in a whirl as if you were going to shoot a medium range right jab - no preparatory movement. Instead of jabbing, however, snap your right forearm and fist down, and your right elbow up. Your right fist snaps down with a screwing motion that causes your striking knuckles to land properly on target. When the fist explodes against the target, your forearm is almost parallel to the floor." The book has a cool drawing of it. Truly, this is Date's technique.

@2piedivideby3
@2piedivideby3 11 лет назад
Hey I have one question regarding the whole corkscrew technique. Does the Corkscrew technique help focus more of the kinetic energy from the punch into a single point in the body? I heard its always good to turn over the fist because when you don't a portion of your kinetic energy is bring dispersed by the elasticity of the skin and muscles. also does corkscrewing the punches increase effectiveness against out of shape fighters? get back at me

Johnny, I read somewhere that boxers threw vertical fist punches al the way up to the 40's. That even Dempsey threw punches without twisting his fist. Do you anything about this?
@bobjamaica9045
@bobjamaica9045 2 года назад
The corkscrew also disguises the punch, you throw a right straight, and your elbow is in line with your body, if you twist right away at the start of the punch, then your elbow slightly goes out of line which can telegraph your punch... Keep you fist upright in a vertical position (so that means thumb is facing the sky and pinky at the bottom), so that your elbow doesn't stick out like a wing, for most of the time your fist is travelling in the air, then twist only at the very end to add the extra speed and power behind it... It works very well with power jabs
@expertboxing
@expertboxing 2 года назад
Wrong and wrong. But I have a video explaining why…releasing later.
@ryhill4434
@ryhill4434 Год назад
@@expertboxing Nope. You’re wrong and wrong. Thumb up is correct for the classic “corkscrew” punch. The corkscrew punch is explained by Jack Dempsey as a medium-range punch in his book Championship Fighting. MEDIUM. This is because of the mechanics of the punch itself. The fist starts neutral and projects as a straight punch as he explains. Thumb up. Then just as you are close to target, the fist comes down and the elbow goes up-violently, he says. That creates a corkscrew of the arm that almost turns the straight into a now palm down hook-that’s why medium range. You do not twist the wrist at all. It’s only the arm. The shoulder creates the rotation. Just look at the picture in his book: his arm is bent like a hook when the glove is in contact with the heavy bag. Your punch is a straight ending, long range punch and all you’re doing is twisting you’re wrist and arm. That’s a karate punch. It’s not boxing-and not a corkscrew. You really appear to just make up your own interpretations of classic techniques. This is worse than your “falling step” explanation.

Johnny Can you discuss the bullet jab and your take on the dempsey roll (I use it as my finisher) and by the by, the bullet jab it when you have your lead arm far from your body and basically apply the corkscrew to generate power so that your arm doesn't have to return all the way to your body.
