livinglegendsmu... www.corkylaing.com An exclusive series of Living Legends Music interviews with Corky Laing. Part 9 of 10. Recorded on October 31st, 2008 at the House of Blues in Lake Buena Vista, FL.
Corky is a phenomenal drummer. Take "Never in My Life" as an example (one of many possible). From the pickup drum intro, you know this is going to song that you will remember forever. He drives this song in a way that just cuts right to my rhythmic core. To sum it up in two words.. F*** yeah!
Go home, you're drunk... Corky Laing... an "underrated" drummer??? On what planet? 0_o wtf is wrong with people like you. everywhere I look on youtube "underrated guitarist, underrated drummer, etc" when speaking of people who established and took their place so long ago in the halls of music... Do people like you just say this to sound cool or like you know something? It's getting really irritating.
@@tumeninodes8870 Because he is underrated you pompous moron. He is one of the best rock drummers of his era that lot of people have never heard of. He is in the same league as Bonham, Moon, Peart, Powell etc... But not nearly as famous. So get off your high horse. You are the one who is irritating and obviously an idiot. The guy you replied to at least had class.
Corky Laing..'King of the Cowbell'..but his talent goes far beyond quarter notes on a cowbell. As I listen to his work with Mountain and West, Bruce & Laing I appreciate his contributions to rock. 'Mississippi Queen', 'Theme for an Imaginary Western', 'Never in My Life'; 'Nantucket Sleighride'; rock classics.
Heavy message. Heavy music . A great power trio. Great people . Flaws and all... contribution to rock and roll . On a scale of 1 to 10.. well you get it.👍
I'm always tellin my drummer. Play it like Corky. His beats and rides open up creative juces. I could jam with this guy all nite. Great set of interviews.
I seen a interview of Corky Laing where he was explaining that when Mountain first got together, Felix told him that “right now all I need to know is where the one is “. He said at first to keep it simple.
Mountain was my first concert. It was at the Santa Monica Civic. They opened with my favorite song, Never in my life. Corky would crash on the cymbals and his drum sticks would summersault into the audience at his choice as he had new sticks in his hand without missing a beat.
Between Mountain and the others like Jack Bruce playing with them, they were the ultimate power trio. Very much would live to hear jamming outtakes from a session.
Saw Mountain at CU campus in Boulder summer 1970. They were LOUD! Felix's amp was so loud that his bell bottoms were flapping from the sound pressure coming out of the bass cabinet. And, Corkey kicked over both bass drums after the first encore.
Felix did the same when I saw him at the Hollywood Palladium a million yrs ago. His bass was ridiculously loud. Mostly likely because I was standing in front of his amps. The guys in front of me were scratching and yelling "WHAT THE HELL"? Great concert. R.I.P. Felix and now Jack B. also. Rest in peace.
I saw Mountain at the Rockin' The Rivers fest in Three Forks, MT in 2002 & caught one of Corky's sticks. Afterward, when I went up to meet them, West acted like he couldn't have cared less, though I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and figure maybe he just wasn't feeling well. Corky, on the other hand, was very friendly. I remember I surprised him when I said I wished Felix could have been there. Guess he never realized there were hardcore Mountain fans even in Montana.
You wonder for years about people, and in fifteen minutes you know when hearing Corky Laing talking of a bandmate, who was brilliant, but couldn't reach his Musical peak. Without shooting dope, imagine what he, and MOUNTAIN, could have done... his name was, FELIX PAPPALARDI, R.I.P.
“Theme For an Imaginary Western” was originally on a Jack Bruce solo album, Songs for a Tailor, written by Jack & Pete Brown. Mountain covered it & Corky was obviously the drummer on that version.
@robcoleman6268 I figured out Theme From an Imaginary Western" when it first came out because it had, what was for me, a new chord progression. I saw Jimi Hendrix, why I play. But listening to Mountain play it was horrible. I'm not a Lesley West fan. His guitar is too distorted, and his soloing is weak. Just playing it on an acoustic guitar to sing it sounds better. You can hear the chords, what they are, not just a mass of noise that sounds in key. But I'm not taking drugs to get into it. That's what this song was recorded for. Somehow, as far as being a slow song, I can see Vanilla Fudge doing this with guest star Jimi Hendrix on electric guitar. Ultimately it would be Jimi on guitar, Jaco on bass, Lyle Mays on keys with Gene Krupa on drums.
What was her sentence? I'm assuming that even in the mid 80s, "the patriarchy" didn't ensure she was given a lengthy(and well deserved) sentence!? Well, so much for the patriarchy! 😏
Right. Wasn't her story "He was showing my how to load the gun" At 4am. When he came home drunk. From being out... with out... her. Gail Collins - unbelievable. I miss Felix so much.
@@looseparts it was 6am, she (his wife Gail Collins) said in her testimony that they were in the bedroom and she was searching in a drawer for something, and she comes out holding this derringer in her hand and she says: “What the hell is this?”. Next thing she said was the cat jumped on her, the gun went off and she’d shot Felix. She may have been surmising it was the cat. It was never quite clear. Also Corky Laing said that night, she (Gail Collins) was stoned on Percodan. Apparently they did a blood test on her and she had about 40 Percodan inside her. She was out of her mind.
@@HighlanderNorth1 the Judge couldn't understand why the jury went so easy on her when the first person she'd called after the shooting (revealed from phone records in court) was not the ambulance or police...she first called her lawyer.
I saw Leslie West, with Corky on drums, at Chicago's Aragon Theater. Corky had a drum roadie who was one of the best drummers, (for the sound check), I ever saw. A big strong guy, about 6'5", long brown hair. Anyone know who he was?
Great interviews. I was and I still am an absolute fan of WB&L. But Corky was a bit behind the others. Now by listening at his interviews, I've discovered a very clever man, able to tell, comment and analyse the events he went thru. So now Mr. Laing, I'm in your group on FB. But why the hell are you always in Finland? lol
Join the March to get MOUNTAIN inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!!! CORKY LAING -- ONE OF THE GREATEST DRUMMERS IN THE ROCK HISTORY CANNOT BE DENIED NO LONGER!!! Sign the Petition and make Rock history!!! www.ipetitions.com/petition/get-leslie-west-inducted-into-the-rock-and-roll
Freewheelin' Franklin Jack Bruce was a music prodigy . when he was a kid , he was sent to a music school in Scotland . The same with Felix Pappalardi .
Pets are good for you. Corky's horses kept him off 'ludes. I've only ridden a couple of times, but you have no trouble realizing that you'd better fuckin' PAY ATTENTION when you're on that beast.
@IRENECHAFFEE1 How do you know ? You have NO IDEA why Corky has that uniform on. maybe is was a gift from a family member or friend or other important person of contact. You have absolutely NO FACTS backing you that come close to suggesting he's trying to disrespect anyone. That's just not Corky. You are making something personal out of nothing.
They psychologically tricked us into thinking Kris Kristofferson in a Star is Born was the real deal hard Rock and lifestyle with no waiver if you're going to be it you live it but that's not true
@surfinaway10afly Hey LivingLegendsMusic, remove this guys quotes and ban him, they are always derogatory and cruel towards Leslie. Nobody wants to read them.
