The only way you can afford to farm is to be independently wealthy. In our rural county two farmers (one of whom was my dad) were bankers, one farmer owned a big trucking company, another owned a chain of grocery stores, one was a NYC Lawyer married to the heiress of one of the big pharma companies and the biggest farm in the county (5000 acres) was owned by a Congressman...and this was way back in the 1980s when I was a kid.

corn price by me in wisconsin this morning 8-27 is $3.31 a bushel. funny how less than 1% of the population controls ALLLLL the food BUT we have NO say in the price we get???? mean while i am watching 2 different co-ops building new grain bin adding new trucks and sprayers and fertilizer spreaders our local deere dealer just added to their shop a addition big enough to hold 4 semi's with trailers. my local tire dealer who comes to the farm just bought another new service truck along with the 2 new ones he bought in spring and sold the 2 old ones he bought 4 years ago. and i have friends at the 2 co-ops the deere dealer and tire dealer and they ALLLLL are getting RAISES again this year they said 4th year in a row. and here us farmer are once again taking the scraps from the table. hoping next year instead of just gristle we MIGHT get a little very little steak

I used my New Idea two row picker. 38 inch rows. ALONE I can pick two semi loads of corn a day. Over the last 25 years. I spent 350 dollars on it. ( a gear box redo ) . Last year I bought a 6600 John Deere combine. ALONE I can not pick more then a semi and a half a day ! With a combine Im chasing wagons all day ! Take the wagons out... stop each time to dump.....then go get them again. IAhuge mistake on my part ! Ill park the combine and go back to my New Idea picker ! Yes..if you have twenty people helping. Of course a combine is much faster...... But I wont even talk about the expenses to operate a combine. Its sickening !

Damn this corn looks worse than our worst field last year after we had to replant mid July last year to get 50% hail damage across 100% acreage after replant. Ended with 140 ish bu across 2600 acres let’s say this will be another profit less year for us as well but we’ve got the yield we’ve been missing for the last 4 years to make up for it.

No expert here but would it not be more profitable to downsize from the large bank loan dependent farms and run older less expensive to maintain equipment? Go Non-GMO or organic so higher grain prices with lower costs. Might be worth testing on a few acres and compare costs and profit. This stuff about loans with interest for fuel and fertilizer and all other operating cost is as ridiculous as the under $2.00 per bushel price that was quoted by someone in the comments. The guy with new idea picker was on to something too. Hope he got one with interchangeable sheller. Look for a way to get away from financing.

I run a small farm, 400 acres, with antique equipment...1975 to 1980 vintage. If you don't have tools and can't repair it yourself the labor costs to fix it (it will break, I guarantee it), will eat up any money you saved by buying old equipment.
@trevorn9381
@trevorn9381 15 дней назад
Parts for some of the older equipment are getting hard to come by. There hasn't been a grain combine sized for a smaller farm built in over 30 years. Deere imported some made in Germany until the early 90s but there were not many of them brought over and if you need parts they have to come from Germany. Some of the companies that built small combines back then like Allis Chalmers have been defunct for decades so your only real option is getting parts from a junkyard or having a machine shop fabricate what you need.
@abdullahroberts8642
@abdullahroberts8642 13 дней назад
@@northdakotaham1752 I would rather pay someone like me down the road to fix something old than pay interest to a bank to buy something new that will still need repairs. The people who control American banks and corporations all work together and benefit off the backs of middle and low income people. A meal on a neighbor’s table is more valuable than funding some fat cat’s beach house.
@northdakotaham1752
@northdakotaham1752 12 дней назад
@@abdullahroberts8642 You would be paying the implement dealer. New or even used old equipment is very expensive compared to the commodity you are growing. With new you have a warranty and there will be a large tax write off...but tax write offs only benefit you if you have income to cover it. On my farm, the gross income doesn't even cover buying 20 year old machinery.
