Imagine planting corn hybrids that could produce 40 to 80 percent of their nitrogen requirements.
It’s only 10 years away, says University of Wisconsin-Madison researcher Dr. Vania Pankievicz.

Her talk was three years ago. Bring her back so we can find out if it’s any closer than ten years away. Or did Covid cost us some time?

This is excellent news! It means, amongst other things, that there wouldn't be fertilizers spilled into the environment anymore (lakes and rivers), and causing a lot of damage.

The big problem is the intentional use. Currently our entire food supply is anchored by corn, which is the most efficient crop for feeding the planet. Plus it's flexibility can provide us both fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. The problem is that this corn is grown with millions of tons of nitrogen per year, spread on the soil. Whatever the plant doesn't absorb soaks into the groundwater. If you have heard of "nitrates" in our water supply, you have seen the problem. Corn is the future of food, with nitrogen being the limiting factor in yield, and the major pollution source.
