I really appreciated your note on gloves! As I recently learned, I’m NOT afraid of handling snakes, but it’s so validating to hear someone with many snakes say that it’s ok to be nervous and suggest a solution that isn’t “don’t be!” Great video!

I'm not scared either but when you are new it's easy to be a little nervous. The first time I was holding my hognose he tried to "dig" into my hand and I thought he was going to bite and jumped a little...

Agreed, Wisty! Everyone goes at their own pace, and we each have different comfort levels, especially starting out, with reaching into enclosures and picking up snakes. I love all animals and have always had a special affinity for snakes, but even with that being the case I get really nervous trying to pick them up myself. Particularly because I just got into Hognoses and they can be hissy/sassy babies. Even feeling very confident it won't bite me it's still hard for me to reach down and pick up a hissing/bluff striking snek. I'm getting better and more brave bit by bit though, and now that we have nine snakes (😂) I am sure I will get over this hurdle soon. But it takes time, and courage, and it's absolutely okay to start out slow and use a hook, gloves, a fearless husband (which is what I do, lol) to help you pick up your snake 🐍

Really helpful video thank you! Literally got a Cornsake the day after I moved in at Uni. First time owning one as I've only had dogs in the past and I couldn't bring my own dog from home but I was allowed a small pet. She came from some owners that didn't have enough time for her but now she's a lil spoiled noodle. She's so shy though bless her.

My family was given a corn snake about 7 years ago. I was too young to handle or understand anything then, and my parents were afraid of it so he never got handled. They also never learned that enclosures should have certain standards like a warm and cool side etc. My corn snake has lived in a tank with just a hide and water dish for the majority of his 7 years with us- no temperature or humidity gauges, special substrate, anything. He’s always seemed very healthy and never raised any concerns. Now that i’m older and have done a lot of research on reptiles, i’m wondering if changing his environment would stress him out too much? If i did give him a heat gradient and other things, would he be okay? He unfortunately had lived in a tank where his bedding wasn’t even changed in about 2 years all until yesterday when I finally moved him in to a new enclosure. I’m worried if i tried caring for him in a precise way like reptile owners tell you to- how would he react? I would also like tips on how to begin handling him? I’ve been following guidelines for new snakes because I can’t find anything like my situation. This guys is 7 years old already so he’s fairly docile, just confused as to what i’m doing when i’m holding him. I just don’t want to stress him out a lot and i’m not sure how to prevent that. If anyone could help me out i’d really appreciate it.
@WickensWickedReptiles

mommy moron well that is quite a life this Corn Snake has lived. Even with a long time poor condition he would still benefit from proper care now that you know how to do it. It’s be like if you’ve had an itch you couldn’t scratch for 7 years and finally you got it. What a relief this snake would feel having proper husbandry. Great job with the research! Glad to hear you’re taking care of your snake 😊

Great video Adam, thanks. I bought my first snake ever last month a beautiful 2 year old sun-kissed male corn snake named Sid Vicious, he's not vicious but is a Sid. He cost me £50 with a complete vivarium setup. I live on the Isle of Wight, in southern England so we don't get a big variety of reptiles here as you do across the pond. I'm 70 next year so he'll probably outlive me. I got him some adult frozen mice and thought he'll never swallow them, he gobbles them down no problem although one tail first. 2 weeks ago he went into his hide and only came out for his meals and to poop which had me worried. This morning solved my worries when I saw a complete shed skin on his substrate, he was only going through his shedding cycle, now he's much brighter and out and about again. Just thought I'd post this to help other fuss-pots like me. Keep 'em coming buddy.

I laughed when I saw your corn snake’s name, we call ours Maize. (Short for Mazikeen Snakerdoodle). She’s super docile, and spoiled. This was a great video, super well put together, upbeat. One suggestion for humidity for sheds with corn snakes who don’t need a lot of humidity, I give our girl a humid hide in her warm hide once she goes into blue, bumps up the humidity when she needs it and can be removed when she doesn’t. She has perfect sheds with it and won’t leave it when she’s in shed.

I was going to name mine maize too! I decided against it because the corn I ended up getting has a really cute pattern with an all grey head and a orange body so now I'm picking a new name to fit it. Still a great name even if it is a bit corny!

In Germany it is illegal to keep Coen Snakes in a rack system. The Tank shuld also be 123 gallons (1 * 0,5 * 0,5) * Length of your Snake. Corn Snakes want to climb so you definitely should give them the option to do so.

Out of curiosity, why do you only use Fahrenheit if you live in Canada? It's weird to me that most of the world uses the metric system yet 90% of reptile care guides only use Fahrenheit and never Celsius. On that note, how hot is too hot for the surface of the basking area? I'd also like to hear more in-depth on cleaning. I think most care guides skip this or are very vague because for people who are experienced it's so basic it gets taken for granted. Last question that could even be a topic for an entire video. If you use live plants, what plants are gointbto be safe but also thrive in a similar environment to what the snake will want

With substrate, I use a mixture of organic top soil and play sand (the sand for sand boxes for kids) for my Did Chilean rose hair tarantula & it works very well for her. So I was wondering could the same mixture I use in her enclosure be used within a snake’s enclosure as well ?

Loved the video, I really learned a lot. I just have a few questions: 1. How often should you feed babies? Should it still be once a week, a tad more often, or a tad less often? 2. Pet stores are horrible, I agree, but I personally would like to get a blood red female as preference, so what are good places to get one? 3. If daylight cycles are necessary, would it be okay to have a ceramic light for day and no light at all for night? Or would I have to still put some source of heat for night time?

Hello I need some help and advice im not entirely new to the whole snake/reptile keeping I keep Mostly kings and Milk Snakes and i just recently got my a baby corn snake because ive missed how beautiful and docile they are and she is very active i have had her since sunday when i got her at the expo im 1.) She is pacing alot going back and forth pushing on the walls idk if this normal behavior in a snake that is 4 days new to her enclosure. 2.) I have a UTH with a thermostat and probe in between the plastic and the UTH with the temp set to 81 degrees on the hot side and its about 76 on the cooler side of the enclosure. 3.) i have two hides which she fits into both of them perfectly with plenty of room when she curls up but she rarely uses inless its during the day. 4.) she ate today (I completely forgot you have to wait as its been a while since ive had any new snakes) but she took it easily then went to hide and about an hr later she was back too pacing. 5.) Could it be she just needs time to settle into her enclosure and should settle down? or is something wrong with her enclosure? Its about 14” L x 11” W and 6 1/2” H (also she was the most active of the bunch at the expo pacing all over the display case trying to get out and now she is doing it at home too). Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated as i am nervous with baby snakes and want to make sure she is happy, My apologies in advance for sounding like a newbie im new to keeping baby snakes and want the best care for her because i usually buy them when they are well above 3ft. Not an idiot, you ask the right question. An infrared-A "daylight" lamp or Arcadia deep heat projector would give a true gradient, a gradual range from warm to cool. If you want to do it right, get a dimming thermostat, such as a Herpstat 200 or 300. If you can't spend the $140 for that, go with a fan speed controller from Amazon ($14) and an ON/OFF thermostat from Amazon ($30 or so, such as the Jump Start seedling thermostat, works great, or the Inkbird ITC306T or similar). Heater plugs into dimmer/fan speed controller, then that plugs into thermostat output. Works awesome.

I am guessing that you have changed your views on this? I am looking for a video to pass to a new keeper and this is a straight up no!! Just on the enclosure alone but can add the lack of enrichment and what is the point of having it if you can't see it. I swear your newer posts say how you believe in larger enclosures. You are new to me just since a few months ago, so I won't hold this one against you but yikes, There need to me a disclaimer on this and send folks to a new one :)

A lot of care guides still say they need low to moderate humidity, and they can tolerate that, but you’re correct. They benefit from humidity between 60-70%.

My snake only shed half way. It’s been about a week now, and she still hasn’t shedded the other half. The problem I have is that I’ve had her for two weeks and she hasn’t ate yet(she’s a baby.) I’ve done everything I could, including spritzing the tank. I’ve covered the tank with a towel besides some of the top. But she hasn’t shed and I’m worried about her eating.

@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 Год назад
It won’t negatively affect them, no. Although heat panels aren’t a good primary heat source because they only produce infrared C (like heat mats). A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial heat source since they produce infrared A and B like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively.

thanks for supporting the channel. For INSIDE you would need a mat that is designed for that, not easy to find. Don't use one designed for underneath inside the enclosure.

@nightinggale6470

@Russc

@@nightinggale6470 40 gal is the dimensions the video gives, ill have to just disagree on that, since the adult corn is only 3.5ft

@@Russc the video is incorrect. 40 gallons is an outdated minimum for corns. I strongly recommend upgrading. Corns are very active and will use every inch of space given to them. They should be able to fully stretch out along one side.

i've wanted a pet snake for what feels like ages and after quite a bit of consideration and research, i finally decided to take the plunge and began working on setting up an enclosure for a corn snake :) november probably isn't the greatest time of year to be finally deciding on it, being someone who will probably end up having an animal shipped (don't really have any expos or specialty shops near me). but i'm just using it as an excuse to take my time with gathering everything i need to jump straight into a bioactive setup. i'm super excited but i'm not gonna complain about having extra time to continue research and make sure my husbandry is well established before the weather warms up enough for the noodle itself to arrive
