Cornell MacNeil (born 24 September 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota) & Renata Tebaldi (Pesaro, Italy, February 1, 1922 San Marino, December 19, 2004). Both singers have huge, chiaroscuro voices. Absolutely incredible singing from both of them. Sorry for the loudness of the brass section, but you know Von Karajan! There are simply no voices like this performing these works today on the main stages. WHY?!?!?!?! No one cultivates them any longer. We have not changed physiologically. Our approach to singing has changed for the worse.
In a 1979 article by LaFranco Rasponi, Tebaldi made the following statement:
"Where are the big voices today? There are only tiny mosquitoes flying around. And we - Milanov, Nilsson, del Monaco, Corelli, and others - lost three and four kilos at each performance, so tremendous was the tension we gave to our assignments! It was our blood we gave to the audiences. How could we have beer such fools?"
And that was in 1979. Imagine what she would say today!
