I bought the Black Dyke Mills Band record in 1981 when I was 17 on the strength of this solo and a few others on the ' Black Dyke Plays Digital ' album . It cost me £5 ( which I think would be about £25 in 2021 money ) but it was well worth the money . Thanks again for the uploads . Mark .
there's no doubting Phillip McCann's virtuosity and place high among the finest ever to play this instrument....after a certain standard perhaps it becomes purely subjective....for me the one that stands above all others is Jim Shepherd.
Phillip's playing and sound amazed me and inspired me musically like few others, but Jimmy was always the cornet king for me...he astounded me by his brilliance. Phillip made mistakes and he sounded human, but it was like Jimmy was super human.
... and this debate will go forever gentleman ! I'm going to sit on the fence and say they are both amazing players in their own way , but somewhat different . That's the beauty of music ! Best wishes , Mark .
And we have a 'thumbs down' for one of the greatest exponents of the cornet in the history of banding......do you not recognise genuine talent? In my humble opinion....the best cornet player ever....
