Martha (Lynne Carol) is confused by Emily's (Eileen Derbyshire) presence at the Rovers bar as Emily doesn't drink. Emily reveals to Ena (Violet Carson) that Swindley (Arthur Lowe) has vanished and in her distressed state nearly faints. Despite the regulars' reassurances, everyone is secretly concerned. Swindley in a daze ends up at an amusement arcade and later PC Page (Brian Steele) finds him in Gamma Garments late at night and Swindley mistakenly blames Doreen (Angela Crow) who left the area 5 months previously. Swindley leaves while quoting scripture. The following day Florrie (Betty Alberge) gets upset with Len (Peter Adamson) over shop delays while Emily assures PC Page that nothing is missing. She plans to visit Swindley but Myra's (Susan Jameson) delay to cover the shop causes Ena to step into the breach where she overcharges Elsie (Pat Phoenix) for nylons. Emily discovers Swindley at home obsessing over Doreen, rationing, and a childhood book. It’s clear he’s suffered a breakdown….

Oh, didnt know there would be a little more after the credits! Very forward looking of Corrie to feature a nervous breakdown back then. Superbly acted. Thankyou for sharing this gem.

Florie that used to run the Corner Shop also had a nervous breakdown back in September 1964. It was very interesting that mental health issues were explored on prime-time television back in the 60s. Coronation Street was going to have storylines of Emily Nugent having a child out of wedlock, Jerry Booth coming out as gay and the introduction of a black family as the street was often accused of representing 50s Britain inside of the swinging 60s. However, all three storylines never saw the light of day.

Coronation Street is doing a Crossroads! Crossroads used to have an extra post-title scene!

This was the only time that I recall Corrie doing a post closing title scene. Scottish soap Take the high road used to feature them regularly in the early 90s. Hollyjokes did also, but I wouldn't class that as a quality soap.

Thank You once again. Cheeky Ena deliberately overcharging Elsie for a pair of nylons. And that's without Elsie saying keep the penny ! Looks like Mr Swindley is having some sort of breakdown. Surprised to see the cliffhanger after end credits. Nice surprise.
