The jokes are thick and fast. The characters complimentary and fascinating. It's hilarious and thriling. The actors and writers were phenomenal during this period. It's brilliant.
My mam used to keep rolled up pairs of my dads socks for when Percy would annoy her and she'd lob them at the screen.😊 Oh the memories these bring back. Thanks @ProfessionalGun 66!
1984 was probably one of the worst years in the shows history. 1985 was more on an even keel. I guess nothing lasts forever and ill health meant some actors had to leave, and they died soon after sadly. We still had greats like Bet, Hilda, Betty, Rita, Mavis, Derek, Alf etc.
When Hilda said "pathetic justice"vs. Poetic I truly laughed out loud. Finding these old shows is like striking gold. I began watching Corrie back in the mid 80s. Watching these gems is like a reunion with old dear friends. I hope you know how very much I appreciate you posting these.
@@bsaunders5271 …agreed, I never found the character of Stan remotely endearing, an ‘entitled’, chauvinistic, idle, sponging, useless slob, he wasn’t funny even by 80s standards.
Always makes me laugh when people in Coronation Street have the ability to get plates of hot food out of the oven without the aid of oven gloves. Try doing it yourself !
Amazing scripts, fantastic character acting, some great comedy timing from the greatest. There was comedy, pathos, drama. Some of the writing for Bet Lynch was comedy gold. Sad that some of the greats are missing (Annie, Albert, Elsie, Ena).
@@deborahwatson2730 in way it seems cushy in a sense like rent free flat no commuting by transport all the shop sweets, chocolates. and magazines at her disposal and records to choose from .
Percy’s diplomacy “As I said to Jerry after the last lot, right we’ve beaten you fair and square-let’s start again! As long as you remember who won the war.” He should’ve been on the Fawlty Towers episode ‘The Germans’.
It's a shame that you can start to hear Stan Ogden breathing heavy from the start of these episodes. So sad he passed again. We lost a great double act in him and Hilda when he was sadly taken from us in November 1984 😔
She can be VERY annoying but I still like her. She's sweet and pretty brave I think, supporting herself and living on her own in a rough area and before the full flower of women's liberation. And don't forget how horribly she was treated by her dying aunt. But she continued to care for her despite the abuse and with no ulterior motives.
@@Guitargirrrl, I like her as well but she can be such a pain at times and while she can be quite sweet she can also be very melodramatic and neurotic.
That scene from 38.00, so poignant and beautifully acted, was Bernard Youens's final ever scene as Stan Ogden. It wasn't meant to be, but it somehow ended up summing up his deeply loving relationship with Hilda beautifully. All the rows were on the surface, underneath they were as one.
@@susi-emily I also settled on that one, or 'cashpoint machine', which retains the British quality. I use 'cash dispenser' when referring to a free-standing unit inside a shop.
@@susi-emily I have always said cashpoint. A few years back I saw Atm on my bank statement and had no idea what it was until I made a call to the bank.lol
How many admirers had Ivy after the death of poor Bert (rip) In real live as well Peter. Ivy must have had more changes to her hair colouring and styles than any other female Coronation Street actress. Some were very questionable 🤣🤣
@@gilliangrant8764 Bill gets mad at the biker for endangering his daughters life, as a father I would have done the same. But Kevin gets mad because his dad has found a really lovely woman he wants to marry. The writers must have wrote "tosser" instead of Kevin when writing the first draft of the script. It's when he starts raising his voice at Hilda is when you're gonna want to grab him by his shirt and violently shake him back and fourth...
Imagine if Bill and Mike had been in the Rovers and Bet ( and Fred) had been there when Bill said “I’m barred from the bookies-I keep winning.” “Fred’s barred from the bookies...for other reasons. ‘E keeps losing.” “Shut it, Lynch!”
Bet lynch and fred make a great duo. I honestly dont know what would be more fun - working in the rovers with bet, betty and fred or in the factory with mike vera, elsie, ivy, ida and the gang
I’m sure Mavis would give a two hour long seminar on the subject if she were given the opportunity… Gee’s!… Mave could drone in about total cobblers for eternity… She was a droid…
What did the writers do to Billy Walker? Turned him into a right touchy bugger, mind you, the regulars (Percy, Ken, Deirdre, Mavis) started nitpicking when he’d only just arrived back so he had good reason.
Funny seeing Kevin back in the kabin, after Michael LeVell's earlier stint as a rude paper boy who fell foul of Eddie Yates, back in the day. All that's really changed is he's grown a moustache, and a couple of inches in height.
I liked Mavis and the decorator together and Percy don’t slam the door on your way out! I’m enjoying march better than February but then that’s true in real life as well
The old Coronation Street is mesmerizing, the present-day CS is annoying and yawn-inducing so much so I can't be bothered to watch it ! Thanks for these uploads x
When Mavis was driving I couldn’t stop laughing at her reaction and her faces she pulls and when Rita was talking to Emily about the roof all fell through has it I don’t mean the roof lol 😂
Its funny but the characters i liked way back when these were origionally produced, i find when viewing them now, i see them in a totally different light ! And, vise versa, the characters i disliked then, i like now! Apart from fred gee who i couldn't stand then & more so now! Like Ivy, i find her a feisty lady Who puts on a veneer but shes really vunerable & a little afraid Underneath her armour But in 1984 i couldnt stand Ivy Used to think Mavis was an eccentric oddball & worried too much but now i see her as a manipulator, a spoiled stupid woman full of bitterness & spite Wittering for attention ALWAYS LOVED ELSIE Who could fault that woman! In her last scenes in Dec 83 i thought she looked fabulous & Yet she was riddled with cancer With not long to live Yet to the end she was a sensation! Never liked Eddie but this time i see him as a real treasure & adorable Ken was a boring twerp in 84 & is boring in 2023. Stan & Hilda are superstars! The glue that held Corrie together along with our Elsie Didnt like Jack & Vera but see how brilliant they appear to me now, a perfect comic pair Emily then was an Earth Angel Now? Ooh a snake in the grass Mike was always a favourite Both times. Why does Ida Clough wear such Very PECULIAR hairstyles? Honestly some styles look as if shes auditioning for The Brides of Dracula! Lol Love Reet now, her acerbic wit & Dark humour slay me! She & Else were 2 beautiful older women, i adore how she teases Old Mave, yet i did not appreciate her back then. Maybe its because im old now & can really understand certain Characters that have hidden dimentions & its a pleasant surprise! Sad to see Eddie & Marian go, i wish they had stayed! WOW their nipper would be over 40yrs old now! Cried with Reet when she heard about Len, lovely Len, her acting was amazing Cried with Ivy for Bert Quick mention to say Liked Alf then... not now Disliked Audrey then, not now! Loved Deirdre then & now Disliked Bry-yunnn then & now Gail was cute & silly & had lush hair in the early shows but turned into quite a warrior maiden & is very determined to build her future around her family & her budding relationship with Ivy is so interesting to watch The backroom girls..Bett &Betty Are my favourites Bett Lynch is an extraordinary & complex character made that way by the fabulous Julie Goodyear! I think she was very underated & deserved much more recognition Than she got! There are times when shes a study in rather beautiful features in perfect alignment! Anyway ive rambled on too long but having watched naught but these episodes almost non stop for the last 3 weeks, in a condensed way, the characters have leaped from 2D to 3D & their interactions with each other, Each family home playing its own Vignette, taking turns in the storyline month by month Presents a tremendous study in Human behaviour from the 1960s 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s ( although i stopped watching it very early 2000) I predict ( if its not already been done ) that Corrie will be studied in high schools, colleges & universities as encapsulating the Human behaviour of the British public in their communities Through the decades & its such a rich area to cover, discover & Study for young people of our future. Brilliant watching for Psychology & sociology students Many thanks to Professional Gun 66, for your saving & gathering all these episodes as they will prove to be invaluable for future Brits to learn from & marvel at! Ive saved all the episodes on a special file & im thrilled with them 🇬🇧👧
Just wanted to say I appreciate your thoughts on Corrie then and now. Personally, I like Ken; he's probably the character I identify with most. My favorite character, though, is the long-departed Jack Walker. He deferred to Annie but could assert himself when needed. I'm still discovering the 1984 characters (I've skipped around in my viewing), but I love the humor and humanity.
I’m not a betting man, but if there was anything at all in the mug that Mike described as “the best cup o char” then my left one is a certified airline pilot!
I think it was due to the Doris Speed (Annie Walker) having a breakdown in real life. I read somewhere that a tabloid upset her with a story saying she was 15 years older than claimed and at the same time her home was burgled whilst she slept upstairs. Together the two incidents affected her health and she later went to a nursing home. Really sad as Doris Speed was fantastic and entertained us all as wonderful Annie Walker.
@@4oclocktimefortea794 she couldn't cope with the impertinence of someone daring to reveal her true age, but she should have known these things always come to light. She shouldn't have lied in the first place, a total 'Annie Walker' move.
@@bsaunders5271 Yes she claimed to be born 1914 but 1899 was soon found to be her real birthdate. They must have checked birth registers and other documents to find she was a staggering 15 years older than claimed.
I’ve thought of a solution to the Newton and Ridley do-Hilda could help behind the bar. That way Fred and Bet can go to the do, and Betty’s not on her own behind the bar.
«Desperate Dick the decorater», «Eat your heart out James Hunt», I’m really loving Rita at the moment! Being free from Len has been such a good thing for her character.
I recon that Arthur character and the one before him was written in to see if there was enough chemistry between either of them and Ivy to start a relationship and as there wasnt it was a case of third time lucky with Don - Could be the actressherself had a quiet input into the goings on
Miss all those old characters. They were the foundation of Corrie that has become so woke now . This was a truly fab soap in its day. I can’t stand it now. 😢
Wow, just saw the scene where Ivy tells old mate that it’s too soon for her and he’s blaming Brian….Sheesh, Bert isn’t even cold in his grave and he thinks that it’s ok to move in on her 😮😮
He did, there’s been lots of actors that got their start in Corrie Tosh was working at the dump then fast forward a few years and he was the manager of graffiti club. The big boss originally in the bill was an abusive step father in one ep. I’m trying to think of them all but bad memory
