Corpse Bride Movie Group REACTION 

Fun fact: The animation for Corpse Bride was done so buttery smooth and perfect, people kept thinking Burton made it using CG and not stop motion! He did not like this, as he's pretty proud of his stop motion style, so when Frankenweenie was made, he cut back just a bit on the smoothness of his animation to show it really was stop-motion.

The story starts with an arranged marriage. The bride's side is poor, but has reputation and a high place in society, meanwhile the groom's side is rich, but they aren't so popular. Each family wins something in the marriage, one wins money, the other prestige.

This movie was perfection. The bittersweet ending shows the movie was Emily's story all along. She never got to find true love or get married with a partner, and not everyone does. She learns to love herself and accept that her life was unfairly cut short.

1:53 Fashion nerd here. Corsets actually don’t hurt at all and don’t damage your body unless extremely tight laced (which rarely ever happened and physically couldn’t be done until metal eyelets were invented). They basically just functioned as bras and supported your back against layers of petticoats. I really wish they never went out of fashion :((

As a tiny kid, the end of Lord Barkis terrified me, mainly because when the chef zombie said "New arrival..." she had a fork in her hand which made me think the zombies were gonna eat him. Watching now I'm still not sure if they were just gonna give him Hell or if my assumption as a kid was correct.

I'm so glad you caught up with Victor's "I would never marry you", yeah, he didn't mean it personally, but he chose the worst phrase to say he would never marry a corpse. That entire scene is painful because both are right 😢

I remember when I was little, I was fascinated by Coraline. Then my mom’s coworker said I would love Corpse Bride too. He was right.

As one who wears corsets: You can lace them solo! Just loose lace, slip on, and then pull tight! Like all clothes, they aren't painful at all if you wear the proper size for you. Healthy wearing does not tighten them to the point of pain or difficult breathing, only to firmly hold the body to shape. Like tights or other form fitting clothes. I love them personally! They probably weren't so kind when first introduced though.

To the argument of the spider web, spider web is literally of the most resistant materials in the world. They are used for bulletproof vests and so far scientists still aren't able to recreate the material.

About Victor and Sparky: Frankenweenie was a short film made in 1984 and one of Tim Burton's first works, about a kid named Victor who brings back his dog Sparky to life, years later they made a full stopmotion movie expanding the story (kind of funny because Burton was fired for the short film because Disney tought that it was to scary for kids). In Corpse Bride Victor and Sparky's names are more of a easter egg referencing the short.

I work around corsets (and people who work with them) ((thanks for the ren-fair)) and as long as its propperly sized and used corsets are actually pretty cool and dont hurt. the way people look at corsets now is kinda like looking at a ring two sizes small and saying "oh rings just suck, you should never wear a ring, its torture" when a real good corset, worn appropriately and the like can feel great. Just when augmented by unhealthy sociatal and class standards, they turn into a real bane of just living, like any thing we humans create :)

The original corsets were pretty much very big bras/back support. Even a few men used them. The constrictive corset came later and (for the most part) its prevalence is exaggerated.

32:10 fun fact, while I have not seen Lazy Town, David Howard Thornton said he based a lot of his role as Art the Clown from Terrifier on the physical mannerisms of Robbie Rotten. I guess he was friends with that actor.

I spent all of my musical learning ability on Clarinet. I understand reading single notes, and that will never change. Trying to read multiple notes, at once, will forever escape me. However, I'm SURPRISINGLY good at learning piano songs through ear. I know which keys are which notes, and from there I just learn songs by listening.

Like a lot of modern stories, this one was actually inspired from an old folktale, specifically one with Jewish origins. And like with a lot of original fairytales, It was kinda more fucked up. It was called The Finger and the premise was basically the same, a young groom playfully but accurately recites his vows on what he believed to be just a root sticking up from the ground the night before his wedding, when to his horror, a corpse with a wedding veil emerges screaming that they are now wed. It’s heavily implied that the corpse bride was a victim of a real life atrocity that occurred in early Russia. Where vicious antiSemites would kidnap Jewish brides before they could be wed, kill them, and then bury them in unmarked shallow graves. The story has a kind of a happy alternative ending, or at least a cathartic one. When the corpse confronted the groom on the day of the ceremony, the rabbi was able to successfully annul the marriage in a Jewish court of law (Yes they actually took this to court). The bride was given a proper burial ceremony with her family to lay her spirit to rest, and the groom was able to marry his actual bride, who promised the corpse that the memory of her tragedy would not be forgotten. The really weird thing is that Tim Burton was fascinated with the fable aspect of the ghost story but specifically chose not to acknowledge the Jewish ties to the story to make his movie more “universal” (or in his words “wasn’t really interested in what the real ethnic origins of the tale were”) It’s really interesting to compare this whole situation with that of the more recent stop motion Pinocchio movie by Guillermo del Torro, who chose to implement the fascist regime of Mussolini as a historical backdrop for the film which greatly ties to the Italian origins of the fairytale. I’m not saying this lessens the quality of Corpse Bride by any means, because clearly a lot of labor and passion went into making this film, but it’s sad to know that the director believed that Christian Victorian England characters would be considered more universally appealing. Additionally, a lot of people, including myself, didn’t know that pogroms like this were a thing in real life so that just adds to the tragedy of reinventing a story by stripping it of its historical context. That’s what makes stories like The Finger, or any fables, so fascinating, because the people who wrote them, wrote about the fantastical to digest the terrible that was experienced at the time.

piano is one of the only instruments where you are able to play the bass line and the melody simultaneously (whicj i think is pretty damn cool, i’m in the process of learning). if you are playing a full song and not just accompanying, the left hand plays the bass line and the right hand plays the melody. also, spider silk is stronger than steel so holding a suit together with it seems perfectly plausible lol

Corpse Bride was one of my favorite movies growing up. I’ve always loved stop motion movies and highly HIGHLY recommend Paranorman!

My mother and grandmother play piano and as far as what y'all were saying. Yes, traditionally the left hand plays they rhythm/bass part and the right hand plays the melody/solos, but they make left-handed pianos now, so as long as you can read sheet music you can learn to play left hand dominant, however learning to play left handed means you wouldn't be able to play unless you had a special keyboard.

A bit of corset facts: they should NEVER hurt, they merely are meant to add structure and smooth the silhouette. They were essentially the precursor to the Bra. They're also NOT hard on the body and if they do feel uncomfortable they're probably too tight, or something is wrong with the fabric. Additionally, corsets are pretty much the exact same as they were when they were first created. The only difference is the material used for boning, modern corsets have steel or plastic whereas historical corsets were made with whale bone. Finally, a corset can be put on alone because they're not meant to be that tight. Hollywood loves to make corsets look like torture machines but they're just another clothing item😂😂😂😂 In fact, tight lacing of a corset was seen as distasteful and was usually done by prostitutes. The look of a small waste was usually achieved by adding padding to the bust and hips to make them look bigger in comparison to the waste. Btw, love this movie with a burning passion❤❤❤❤

Corsets can be a controversial topic, but basically there are many types of corsets, as well as different types of material for corsets. There were some types that are depicted in media that shows it basically pushing the ribs inward, and those could cause some internal damage. But the more popular type, and more commonly worn, were actually quite comfortable and helped women maintain a straight posture. It also depended upon other factors such as your economic status, personal preference, natural stature, time period, and corset material. I have actually worn corsets due to back issues, as it helps as a natural support. So technically yes, certain types of corsets were worn by a select few to maintain a very very narrow waist made of improper materials that caused organ damage, but most were fine.

I think Victorias family has old money so they have a long history with being high up in society even tho they technically don’t have it in money they have it in assets and name , Victors family I think is new money so they are well off but don’t have the respect the old families have so by marrying it’s a win win as his family gets the name and her family gets the money

Is no one going to talk about how the overworld is bleak, grey, lacking in any life, meanwhile the literal dead people in the underworld are full of life, their world is colorful, vibrant, energetic? It's genius to incorporate those ironic opposites into this.

I definitely recommend ParaNorman it’s one of my favorite Halloween movies. On a non spooky note 2 stop-motion movies I really enjoy and The Fantastic Mr Fox, and Kubo and the Two Strings. I don't know if you watched these yet but if not they are a good watch!!

Corsets weren’t actually bad, and were rarely tight laced. They are actually quite comfortable if tailored to fit you right and gradually broken in. And as somoeone with back pain, they are great for support. And yes, you can lace a corset yourself.

I’d definitely recommend paranorman, one of my favourites and really funny. I would say frankenweenie isn’t the best of tim burton, but still an underrated and a sweet story to watch- it meant a lot to me when I was younger, having my own dog also called sparky pass away not long before I first saw it.

Frankenweenie is a great movie-not actually connected though haha. Aside from character names and looks, they’re different stories, mostly evident by the different time periods. Doesn’t stop people from liking to connect the movies though (kinda like the Pixar Theory) Very excited for more Spooky Month videos!!

While the movie portrays a very traditional arranged marriage, during the era this movie was set in, it was actually more common for couples to have a period of courtship where they would meet under supervised circumstances and get to know each other better before deciding to marry. Definitely not as restrictive as Victoria's parents are lol

I do have a fondness for Corpse Bride, it's quite a bittersweet tale though, paced almost like a Penny Dreadful. For other stop motion works I would recommend if you haven't already there's Paranorman and Kubo and the Two Strings, both done by LAIKA who did Coraline, the Wes Anderson stop-motion films (Fantastic Mr Fox or Isle of Dogs, can't go wrong with either), and Wallace & Gromit, by Aardman the Grandaddy of Stop Motion, Curse of the Were-Rabbit is fun and fitting with the current season, but I would say that Aardman's best work is The Wrong Trousers.

I'd absolutely love to see you guys react to more Halloween-y Stop Motion movies like ParaNorman and Frankenweenie :D I'd also recommend Boxtrolls and Kubo And The Two Strings as great Stop Motion movies that could work for Halloween, they're both from Laika studios just like Coraline and ParaNorman

I know my request would be drowned out in the sea of Commons but I'll give it a shot. For Halloween I would recommend Wallace and Gromit curse of the were-rabbit. As a matter of fact just watch the short films of Wallace and Gromit. They're all great.

If a corset is uncomfortable, it is either new, poorly made, or doesnt fit you. Tight lacing was when a corset was tightened to make the waist smaller (how pn all corsets are portrayed today) and it was actually kind of a meme back then.

Corsets were actually rather helpful for preventing back pain. It was tight-lacing which was harmful, but that's a whole seperate thing

Fun fact! There is such a thing as a left handed piano! I am left handed too, and though I tried to learn piano as a kid I struggled due to this. So I am excited there is such a thing as a left handed piano now. Also there is apparently a difference between every day corsets that the common woman and poor woman wore back in the day and the fancy rib cage crushing corsets that people know of that needed a second person to lace up. The every day corset could be done by one person and wasn't nearly as painful as the famous ones. The famous ones were for rich people to look fancy. And I agree please do Paranorman!!!!

Corsets are actuallt quite comfortable, the problem is if you don´t know how to lace it up properly OR choose to tight lace it. doing it correctly it just gives you suport (You take a DEEP breath in before tightening it so that when you tie it you have the suport BUT litteral breathing room. the trend of tightlacing was not as common as media has made it seem, many acctresses that are in period movies that complain about the corset has most likely experianced tightlacing becuse the dresser was not familiar with how to tighten and when to stop. tight lacing is when you breath out trying to get all the air out and have someone lace you in as tight as possible.

This talk about being able claim to be anything in the past and people just went with it, is the exact premise for A Knights Tale starring Heath Ledger and if you hsvent seen that movie you definitely have to. Its one of my favorite movies ever!

One has money, and the other has a title. You can't buy a title in theory. But you can marry into one. Which is what they're doing.

The whole corsets are painful thing is pretty overexaggerated. They were pretty much the same amount of comfortable as bras. They worked similary too, they supported the bust plus the back and layers of skirt. Because nobody except super high fashion people and only for special occasions would lace them tight. Which makes sence, since women of all social classes wore them. They wouldn't be able to go to work in a factory if they needed a fainting couch because they couldn't breathe, would they? In fact modern corsets are often worse because they're not made to the weaters measurements or just straight up cheap.

FYI- traditional corsets were not painful. For the regular woman, they were just bras with front and back support, and were tailored specifically to the woman’s body. The only women who laced tight enough to cause damage were the high society ladies, because they were the only ones who could afford to lose mobility. Funny enough, corsets nowadays are far worse, just because they’re mass-produced (so very few women own one tailored specifically for them), and they’re way easier to tightlace.

She wasn't butterflies. The afterlife that we saw is the equivalent of purgatory. And the real other side we never saw. But that's where Emily went when she turned into butterflies. You stay in the equivalent of purgatory until everything is resolved. Even the ancient Greeks a version of that it was called the fields of mourning.

16:03 probably also in part because of Nightmare before Christmas. All these movies (Nightmare BC, Coraline, Corpse Bride) have a very similar feel to them. NBC was directed more by Henry Selick than it was Tim Burton. Henry Selick did however direct Coraline. All these 3 movies are stop motion and all have the same feel and tone so I wouldnt be surprised that Coraline (another macabre stop motion kids film) has people thinking its Burton again

Corsets have always been a form of lingerie. Movies always show the extreme corsets. You should what Abbie Cix's videos on Corsets. The everyday corsets were actually extremely comfortable. And yes, there are corsets that you can lace on your own.
