Hi everyone! I'm Aja Dang and today I'm correcting bad financial advice I gave to those who attended my live Q&A during The Financial Diet's 2020 Reset. Let's face it, I'm just not good live - I'm better scripted and edited. Even though I could've accepted the loss and moved on, it really bothered me how poorly I answered two questions:
1) How do you save for multiple financial goals at once
2) Is it okay for me to invest in things that I don't align with morally?
(and yes, as I just rewatched this video I'm realizing I'm saying "in line" not "aligned". So apparently I'm not good edited either lol)

i care a lot about the environment (majored in env sci) but if ur gonna invest in the stock market i think its best to invest in what makes you money and not buy the product on a consumer level. its consumers who determine supply-demand ex: Coca-Cola. awful company for the environment - the amount of plastic they put out is crazy. you might think to invest in their company bc they might make u a lot of money and what if they use the money for R&D (alt to plastic bottles). ur on a misssion to go as close as to zero waste as possible idea.. dont buy coca-cola in the stores! now maybe dont go in and invest in oil (what is used to make plastic bottles) but rather solar. but if you dont care about a return keep investing in renewable energy and all other ethical not too well known brands

Aja, just a word of encouragement: the fact that your responses from a month ago continue to bother you speaks strongly to your drive to better yourself and to become a better woman. Complacency is the enemy of progress. I know that I don't speak just for myself when I say that I love your financial content and your willingness to be transparent. Also wanted to comment on one of your videos to share that, like you, I ordered a cake yesterday to celebrate paying off my private student loans!! Hey Aja - I attended the TFD Big Reset Summit and I loved your presentation. Unfortunately I was not able to get onto the live Q&A's as they all sold out/spaces filled really quickly. I watched the replay and you did better than you think you did however I really admire how you are reflecting upon your performance and creating a solution (i.e. doing this video to add more value to your audience) in a constructive and healthy way. Owning ourselves and being compassionate while being constructively critical allows us to grow from our experiences rather than feeling embarrassed or ashamed by them. Live interactions whether it is a speech, Q&A, presentation, 1-2-1 conversation etc while can be improved is our true selves in that given moment. We do the best that we can in that given moment, this includes us overcoming our nerves, apprehension, etc in the same moment. Practice is progress. :-) We don't have to answer straight away, we can stop and take a moment but that is easier said then done I know, especially if we are actually unsure of the answer. Even if we don't know the answer there is a way to add value to the person asking the question. Keep doing things that scare you but are also the things that are right for you and your journey x P.S. I hope you are feeling a lot better x x

Haseena, Great feedback and encouragement! I’m also terrible giving on the fly answers to questions. I suck at job interviews when it’s a Q&A type interview versus a flowing conversation with the hiring staff. But practice really does help. Aja, I know in some forums or panels, the organizer will sometimes request live audience members to submit questions in advance so you can prep for it. I know you don’t have control over the format, but worth asking about in the future. But, really, if this is something you enjoy, keep doing it. You’ll build up that thinking on your feet power. Also, feel free to take a pause, take a sip, or whenever possible ask follow up questions so you can provide a better live response. :) I commend you for wanting to do better, add value, and acknowledging your weaknesses and confronting them.

Regarding the question on investing in more ethical companies, I find that I just have to adjust my interpretation on what a return actually means. You probably won’t see as high of a return in the form of money. However, a return can take on different forms: a reduced impact on the environment, increased wages for employees, higher quality products, etc. When putting together a portfolio, it’s up to you to determine if those potential outcomes are valuable enough to earn your investment. And like you said, investments aren't permanent, so you always have to opportunity to switch up your portfolio to align with your needs.
@SL-lz9jr
@SL-lz9jr 3 года назад
I like this interpretation. This sort of investment is less selfish and more about the greater good. To me, it’s akin to supporting a friend’s new business. It may not be an equal analogy but emotionally and mentally and spiritually, to me it’s similar. If I make money from it, that’s cool, but if my friend succeeds because I contributed seed money or my friend did something amazing with that money, even better! Or when I contributed funds to a friend’s son’s science camp and he later created something awesome to serve humanity. Sometimes the benefits are beyond immediate direct gains, but rather social gains. Hopefully you do eventually make money from ethical investments esp if you’re playing the long game. Thanks for the food for thought. It’s got me thinking how I can “support” a business via my financial portfolio rather than consumer purchase

We all mess up (especially when we don't have enough time to think), but only few of us go out of our way to make things right. The question about the person who was interested in investing in companies that align with her ethics, she can always check out the dow Jones sustainability index they come out with a yearly report on elite companies that are leaders in sustainability as well as creating value creation and long term growth with social,economic and environmental impact in mind. Also she can check out if the business is a benefit corporation. B-Corps are businesses that put their corporate social responsibility up at the top in line with making profits as well.

This has been such a huge problem of mine. I’ve had meetings with managers who would ask me big important questions and I never have an adequate answer. I’ve had to learn recently that it’s on me to tell them I need more time to think about it. And I especially dislike when I’m asked if I have any questions for them. Again, I need time to get back to them. Lol. But in client facing duties, I learned that once I’ve built a “memory bank” of client experiences, and I have more of those memories to pull from, I’m better able to think on my feet for customer inquiries. All that to say, practice practice practice. But I’ve definitely learned it’s okay to say “let me get back to you on that”. :)

This is such an important video! Re: Investments - I would like to highly caution people against putting all of their money into specific companies- especially avoid a concentration in a single industry. From a risk balance perspective: money for basic living expenses in retirement (ex 401k) should be mostly money market funds, several different funds that don’t overlap much is ideal. The closer you are to retirement, the safer the fund should be. After that: pick some of your favorite industries/causes (ex solar power) and invest in a couple industry specific funds. This is also a good place for currency funds or international funds. After that, should specific stocks and companies be chosen and prioritized. Play it safe as you build your safety net, and you can survive a short recession or changing politics. Good luck!💸

Solid advice. I’m new to investing as of the lockdown when the stock market dipped a lot. And diversification was the main takeaway. I still need to learn more about different types of funds and classifications but it’s been fun to see my money go up and down. I mostly have money in an ETF and a tiny bit in stocks. I’m looking to expand my portfolio once I understand what else to invest in. As for my 401ks, I need to better understand what’s happening with my accounts there. I haven’t done anything with it since quitting my two respective jobs where I had 401k contributions. Ahhh so much to learn! Wish I had interest in this a decade ago!

Kudos for you to admitting to being human (we all make mistakes)! I appreciate that you care so much and gave these updated answers a lot of thought on how the they could be more helpful. In terms of the second question, I do the best that I can. I think there is an effort everyone can make, and a lot of people making a little effort can result in big changes. It’s not up to one person to make all the change, or I don’t think it should be. We also are complex, multidimensional people. I’m vegan but also do a lot of convenience shopping on Amazon and don’t always have the $$ to purchase the most sustainable products. But I’m proud of the efforts I do make and I’m aware of what I can do better in the future.

Voting during shareholder meetings. When you buy a stock, you’re essentially one of many shareholders, so you can vote for specific resolutions that align with your values. It’s a way of directly engaging with the company and letting the company board know how you’d like to see the company governed. Also.. Generally companies with a higher ESG rating have higher returns!!

This is my take on investing in companies that my might not align with your ethics (as a financial professional). First of, if you don't agree with me, you don't have to! Invest however you want to because at the end of the day it is your choice. Make take: If it's not an IPO, the money you invest is NOT going to the company. Therefore, you should invest in a fully diversified portfolio. Historically we can see that socially responsible portolfios underperform (lower returns) fully diversified portfolios which include these "sin stocks". It's just unfortunate that those who are trying to be socially responsible are getting lower returns. I just want to emphasize that if you are not investing in an IPO and sequential public offerings, your money is NOT going directly to a company. If you are OK with the trade off of supporting "better companies" with a lower return that is also OK!!

Well first, in response to your question about investing in things you don't align with morally.... my answer is I don't know. I've struggled a lot with morals/ethics and if businesses should even take part in those discussions? Like yes, it's good to be socially conscious, but ultimately in the end, the job of a business is to MAKE MONEY for shareholders, so is it really fair to hold businesses on a moral high ground? Businesses do respond to current events and social issues, and can make it sound like fluffy when they do, but ultimately it comes down to the business and the money. And with investing as well, I think as a new investor (or really just anyone who isn't a billionaire) sometimes you don't have the financial luxury to invest only in companies that are moral and ethical, and you need to think about your own self-interests... after all being in the US, we live in a capitalist society lol. Anyway, I guess my answer is that idk and it depends, and sometimes financial priviledge plays a part into what you are able to consider or not consider.

Hi Aja! I’d love to know what your approach is to buying luxury items for yourself, and putting money towards things that aren’t necessarily savings or investments. I have no debt or loans, and I have a decent amount of savings and money in retirement/investment accounts. However, I can’t seem to ever justify pulling the trigger on something like a luxury bag, even though I would love to have one/gift myself something for a big accomplishment. I don’t believe in considering luxury items as “investments” so to speak because they aren’t really - especially if you don’t plan to resell. But I do think it’s better to spend on one long lasting item rather than a bunch of fast fashion. What do you think? How do you think about budgeting for luxury bags or similar items?

I think investing ethically can be strategic, over time, and will eventually align with your life state. For example, I am super hopeful that one day I will be able to invest with an ethical, women owned firm (that has a $50,000 min investment) which I'm currently not able to afford. Until then, I will continue investing to get me to that point where my money can truly make an impactful difference 🙏🏽 Like Aja said, nothing is permanent.

@@AjaDang Absolutely! Robasciotti & Philipson Social Justice Investing robasciotti.com/about-us/#our-story Absolutely recommend checking them out. There's another firm called NIA Impact Capital that I think has a lower threshold, but it's not black-led which is something I really value about Robasciotti. Learned about these through this piece: www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2020/08/12/invest-money-racial-justice

I wished there was more active online support for ethical investing, ESPECIALLY from somebody like yourself... Your investments have a much bigger impact than buying from small business and I truly believe that if somebody with your social media clout could get behind doing the right thing and divesting from coal, oil, etc (not only with your investments, but also with whatever financial institutions holds your assets), the world would have a fighting chance. I've been watching your channel for years and am really disheartened by this video, please please please use your privilege for good and educate your following on why divestment is crucial :(
@AjaDang
@AjaDang 3 года назад
sorry I disappointed you with this video but not everyone is as privileged to only support ethical investing. and while ethically it's the "easy thing to do" you also have to keep up with demand of the world. If you're already buying ethically, that means you're paying a premium for products or groceries that people can get for 1/3 of the cost so people need to make up that difference somehow. Not to say you're wrong, because in an ideal world you're right but it's not necessarily as clear cut as it seems.

@@AjaDang yes, but why not take the time to educate your viewership on it? I'm not saying you personally have to, but brushing over it the way you did is sad, you had such a great opportunity to explain to a really big audience about something that honestly isn't well understood by most people. Also please don't tell me about privilege, that's a bit of a cop out. If you have the luxury to invest and to make content about financial literacy, you have the luxury to educate yourself/your audience on ethical investment instead of brushing it off as 'only something the privileged can do' - that does not sit right with me
@AjaDang
@AjaDang 3 года назад
@@shaylarance4695 I don't think I brushed over it but since I'm not educated enough on it to talk about I didn't want to talk out of my ass on a topic that's so important. Which is why I called for people in the comment section for their opinions.
